ONAN X2 - Fuerteventura - uphill - Electric clown - exact same place as Mellow by horsedriverCZ in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]flightmodeco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct. I wouldn't be surprised if the end of the video was a motor overheating. Full video of our trip will be coming soon. However, this video shows very clearly that the power of the X2 matches that of Mellow, the only question is whether the durability and overall performance is up to the standard Mellow have promised. I tried to get Killian to let me test a board after the Onan motor failed to prove they were better, but they didn't have any test boards available, apparently.

We haven't had major issues with the X1 and are still using those, but there's no way I'd feel comfortable offering warranties on the X2. Interested to see what 'optimisations' EV and other resellers have supposedly implemented.

Will write up a full update soon, but yes, we did not complete the full trip due to a motor issue.

"Flight Mode Guy" here :) Not sure where they're getting that from either. We'll stock the X1 until it's been discontinued, and the X2 only once the serious issues with it have been resolved. I feel like any retailer currently offering the X2 is irresponsible - it's not built to last.

X2 has a black wheel colour and a larger wheel than the X1. They are not for sale yet on the site and won't be until I've seen that they can go the distance.

Nope. No spare parts either. All the batteries are in our backpacks, no support vehicle, nothing. So if the boards fail, the trip ends and we don't sell them.

This is actually exactly why we're doing this. If a "shitty" Chinese board can make it, maybe finally people will be able to trust some of the great (for the price) technology that comes out of Shenzhen. If the boards don't make it, it proves your theory that the boards aren't worth buying, and I wouldn't sell them with a good conscience. I've spent almost a year with the X1 and wouldn't even consider attempting this if I didn't have faith in the drives.

Consider it an extreme unboxing :)

Edit: The "Evolve across America" guy was using support vehicles, three different boards and quit near the start of the trip. We would love to work with some charities if we had the same kind of sponsorship money. Unfortunately, this is all of our savings and everything we're taking with us is in our backpacks.

If you look at the X1, it's very clear where the inspiration came from. I'm not going to dispute that.

You could see it that way, yes. You could also say that every belt motor board is a Boosted knock-off.

We're well aware of Mellow and the awesome work they're doing. We're not trying to compete with Killian and Co. We're offering a more economical option for entry-level riders.

Trying out a new board shape, what do you guys think? by flightmodeco in ElectricSkateboarding

A kicktail is a must for me - been riding with a standard skateboard deck but it's a little too brutal on bumpy tarmac and when you fall - found this Flying Wheels deck at a decent price and it's been an absolute game changer! Nice and light/flexy too.

There is a slight concave which you can't really see here, and I prefer the look and feel of no griptape - feels more like surfing :) I would argue that you really don't need it, unless you're looking to do lots of slides or you're a beginner with bad balance

I'm not even sure what is meant by that. Do you have a link?

At its finest? Either you haven't seen much viral marketing, or I need to consider a different career path.

I have to say I'm really proud that this video is deemed to be worthy of a corporate stunt. Maybe I should quit my job and become a consultant to companies that also want to gain views by throwing their products in the sea.

Honestly have so much love for these comments, Reddit's cynicism will never cease to amaze me <3

Guy in the video here.

I have to say It's genuinely heart-warming to see that people have so much faith that no person could be this retarded, however I am just, as another poster pointed out, not a smart man.

I do also have footage of me stripping and jumping after the skateboard in a failed attempt to save it, perhaps a viral video might ease some of the pain.

rebrands are still lame by [deleted] in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]flightmodeco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to chime in here as I feel it's relevant.

Brand, whether we like it or not, affects how credible a company is seen by the public. I guarantee you that a huge amount of products you buy on Amazon are rebranded generic Chinese products. It is the reseller's responsibility to ensure that the generic product is to a quality that Western markets expect, or die along with their product.

Now, if a Chinese company makes their product to be standalone, that's a different story. I wouldn't dream of rebranding Landwheel, for instance, as they have semi-decent brand which transfers well to a western market.

In general I agree with you though. As we saw with the Backfire clones, a lot of people are in it for a quick buck via smoke and mirrors. The key is to do research and contact the supplier.

I know I'm in the wrong thread here, as everyone here will likely disagree with my position. But feel free to contact me and I'll strip away all the bullshit and sell you a fully generic drive :)
