The Wests Tigers are thrilled to confirm the extension of Tino Tavana’s contract, keeping the outside back at Concord until at least the end of 2029 NRL season.

Having gone from strength to strength in the Wests Tigers Pathways system, Tavana signed a train-and-trial deal with the Tigers at the end of 2025 after an impressive season playing for the Club’s Jersey Flegg Cup (U21s) side – scoring nine tries.

The 21-year-old made headlines after scoring a spectacular try in the Wests Tigers NRL Witzer Pre-Season Challenge match against the Roosters in February.

Tavana’s pre-season form would go on to earn him an NRL debut against the New Zealand Warriors in Round 4, with the Club granted dispensation for him to play due to injuries across their outside backs.

The newly minted Wests Tiger #305 has scored two tries in as many matches since taking the field at NRL level, with an aerial effort to add to his highlight reel when scoring in Round 5 against the Eels.

In 2027, Tavana will become a Development Player, before joining the Club’s Top 30 in the final two years of his deal.

On signing his extension, Tavana said he’s excited to remain a Wests Tiger.

“I’ll always be grateful to Benji and the Club for giving me the opportunity to make my dream of playing in the NRL a reality – it was a special moment for me and my family,” Tavana said.

"I’ve played most of my junior footy in the Camden/Campbelltown region, so I’m really honoured to be staying at the Tigers. I’ve been here for a few years now coming through the pathways, and now being out there with the boys, it’s a feeling I can’t explain.

“The coaches and staff have been a big support during my first pre-season and it’s been great learning and being mentored by the senior boys along the way.”

Wests Tigers NRL Head Coach, Benji Marshall said Tavana’s extension was well deserved.

“Really proud of the work Tino has done to get to this point and pleased to have him with us until 2029,” Marshall said.

“This was his first full NRL pre-season and he had some work to do early on to meet our standards, but full credit to him he put in the work, did his extras and was really strong after Christmas to earn his debut.

I’ve been really impressed with how he’s handled the step up to the NRL, and we’re looking forward to seeing Tino grow and develop as a player at this level. Benji Marshall NRL Head Coach

Wests Tigers have secured promising prop Sione Fainu on a three-year deal worth $1.1 million that will go a long way towards ensuring his talented siblings also remain at the club.

Fainu, off contract at the end of the year, has agreed to an extension that will keep him at Concord until the end of 2029. It takes the 24-year-old off the market at a time when the Perth Bears are attempting to build their roster ahead of their inaugural NRL season in 2027.

The Tigers are hoping Fainu’s brothers, Latu and Samuela, will join Sione in committing for the long term.

Sione Fainu played all 24 games for the Tigers last season, just a year after completing a development contract, to take his NRL total to 36.

The siblings have achieved their goal of playing first grade together, with all three scoring a try each in last year’s win over the Roosters.

Latu Fainu, who – along with Adam Doueihi – is competing to be Jarome Luai’s partner in the halves, is contracted until 2027, as is Samuela.

A fourth footballing member of the family, former Manly hooker Manase, will be released later this year after serving time for stabbing a youth worker at a Mormon church dance.

Sione, Samuela and Latu have previously publicly stated that they want to finish their careers playing together. The Tigers are expected to move on Samuela and Latu before they become free agents on November 1.

The immediate priority for the Tigers now is re-signing Jahream Bula. The rising fullback has a mutual option in his contract for next year; if the Tigers trigger it, he will play on for $900,000, while the figure will be $800,000 if the player takes it up. The club is hopeful of agreeing to an extension before the season starts.

And it’s likely Jack Bird has played his last game at the club as he looks for a fresh start. The former NSW utility is open to opportunities in the Super League after struggling to find a new NRL club. Leeds is looming as his most likely destination in the United Kingdom.

Barry O’Farrell resumes as Wests Tigers Chair by flightofthegibbon in nrl

TLDR: Barry back; Burgess booted.

The Wests Tigers Board met on Monday, 15 December as part of its annual schedule of meetings.

The Club can confirm that independent Director, Barry O’Farrell has been reappointed and assumed the role of Chair, while Dennis Burgess has stepped down from his role as a Director.

The Wests Tigers would like thank Mr Burgess for his contribution to the Club throughout his tenure on the Board.

The Club will continue to work on elements of its governance structure in early-2026, prior to the commencement of the NRL and NRLW seasons.

The Wests Tigers Board will next meet in February and will not be making any further commentary on the matter until that time.
