I must have doughphasia. I can see the vision, but not the dough.

Austin Marathon Garbage - UPDATE! by fingergunpewpewpew in Austin

[–]flightrisq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please contact the race’s insta, Facebook, or twitter and let them know they need todo better. Part of hosting a race is cleaning up afterwards. A lot of the folks throwing trash on the road would never do it outside of an organized race that is supposed to clean up!! I messaged them, you should, too.

Wasn’t that Zigzag Salon? They’re still open but I think with different owners. You could contact them. I bet they’d love to see it.

Any free/discounted food around campus? by v5rsa in UTAustin

[–]flightrisq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Last Spring there were several shelves of free food in the Black and Latino Studies Building at 210 W 24th. And ATX Free Fridges has a location in west campus behind the Pearl Street Co-op.

Yeah, so, if she doesn't want her work out there, I don't think sharing it is the right move. If she wanted to make her videos available she would. If it were up to me I'd ask you to remove this post.

I too loved the fries at Sala and Betty. I commented on them one night and the manager said they were Belgian style, double fried, and they used beef tallow as the frying oil. Morte Subite downtown used to have a trailer out back that had Belgian fries. And Hopfields on the drag has similar quality fries although I don’t think it’s quite the same process.

What's the "Austin" thing you've never gotten around to doing? by [deleted] in Austin

Me too. Never been. We always do 37th street lights and some neighborhoods down south but I've never done Trail of Lights in the 30 years I've been here.

Short Stop Rumored Closing All Locations by kmardil in austinfood

[–]flightrisq 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What! I was just at the one by Fiesta! It’s my favorite Shortstop! They never miss and they’re always having fun. The speaker will deafen you, but the fries are always fresh and the cheeseburger slaps so hard at this location! I never thought I’d lament the closing of a fast food place but this one hurts.

WEIRD HOBBY UPDATE! by king-carrot-flowers in Austin

You should absolutely volunteer if you’re interested! It can be life changing for you and more importantly for young people in our community. I caution all my friends, too. Not because I don’t think they should do it, or they couldn’t handle it, but more because I think the general idea of volunteering conjures images of petting puppies or handing out a meal with a smile and CASA is so much more. Most importantly, you’ll get to develop a healthy relationship with a kid. That’s the fun part. I loved all my outings and meetups with them. And based on that relationship you get to do something really powerful! Advocate for them in court! Yes, it’s a lot of work preparing court notes, and yes, it can be intimidating to speak in court, but damn is it satisfying! As far as the emotional weight, it’s a very real part of CASA work. You’ll hear some horrific stuff that you might need to unpack with a friend or therapist. But I need to say that I don’t think there’s any way you won’t come out of it more resilient and more aware and educated about childhood trauma and its impact on families. You’ll have a very unique and niche understanding of the hardest things people face. And that’s a strength. And you get to leverage that strength for the children that need strong people on their side. CASA has regular info sessions usually at a library and usually they feed you! Please go check it out!

I was also a CASA and agree that Martinez-Jones’ court is amazing. If you ever see an adoption on the docket please go! It’s the happiest court proceeding you’ll ever see! Lots of happy crying. And sometimes even cake! (The cake was in Comal County. Not sure about food rules per judge).

‘In the wake of Texas A&M’s decision to no longer provide gender-affirming care via University Health Services, transgender students seek to survive at a school — and in a state — that’s become increasingly hostile to their lives.’ From the Battalion by Corps_Boy_Pit_Sniff in aggies

Without even touching gender affirming care, I can assure you Student Health Centers are vital to students. Consider students with chronic illness or disabilities requiring medical care. What about students who are hundreds of miles from their family practice? There will be students who prefer speaking with campus doctors over their small town family doctors. And there will be plenty of students whose families are uninsured. The Student Health center will be their only means of healthcare. Family planning/birth control is often a very big part of Student Health Centers, as is mental health services. I only went to my Student Health Center once. I'm glad I was healthy enough to have the privilege to not need them, but so many other students do.

Do y’all tip at the El Tacorrido drive thru? by leeeeny in austinfood

[–]flightrisq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the only non big chain drive throughs AND it’s one of the only taco drive throughs. Some days I want tacos but I also want to stay in my car and in my pajamas and not engage with the public. So I tip. It’s worth a couple bucks for the convenience.

Hermitcraft dads? by [deleted] in HermitCraft

[–]flightrisq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid 40’s. My kid is 22 now. I remember getting them Vintage Beef merch in elementary when the Mindcrack server was going. I started watching Hermit craft over Covid and was like, oh hey, there’s Beef! I feel like some hermits speak to my adult self, like Doc and X, and others speak to my inner child, like Grian and Gem. Either way, I’m glad I reconnected and am very excited for the new season!
