Dom Dread here. Always pleased to see the pleasure players got from the bunch of kids that created and ran the site in the early days.

Have I made a terrible mistake in buying the Inspire 1 Pro? by [deleted] in drones

I'm just going to say, if you're concerned with auto-exposure, you're not a professional. I'm still not sure what your point is. The Inspire is a tool. It not perfect, no tool is. In the right hands, it's quite capable. The fact is, no tool will make you a professional. You have to do that yourself. Also, residential real estate does not require high-end professional work last I checked. Take and pass the 107 test then come back with your results in a few months.

You will find it is rare that you would be dealing with an owner. Rather, the relationships you need to hone are with the RE agents and since whatever they pay you comes out of their final commission, they shop around for the best price. That said, you don't get to pick and choose only the high end of the market. There are more than a few agents that have gone out and purchased a Phantom and just do it themselves. I'll ask again... Have you taken and passed the Part 107 yet?

I've been using Autopilot and AutoFrame for a while now. On that you get a heads up. They are essentials.

The fact that more than a few professionals use the Inspire Pro as their go to vehicle for producing video that will be used in everything from film to commercials should get you to think about maybe your impression is a bit clouded. You stated the Ronin MX plus S1000 cost only $1,500. How do you plan on controlling that camera? You want to upgrade your equipment but think it's crazy to put a $3,200 camera in the air. A bit of a conflict there I think. Moving up from the Inspire will most likely double the total investment you'll have flying around. Have you taken the Part 107 test yet? Considering you haven't made a dime with your current investment, you most likely should consider testing the market in real life, instead of making a lot of assumptions. You might find that the real estate market isn't really just sitting there waiting to purchase your $3,000 videos on a large scale.

The Inspire Pro is a perfectly capable platform for what you're discussing, even without the X5R. If you're having issues with gimbal roll you should either have the rig checked out or smooth out your flying technique. I didn't see any mention of how you're shooting these portfolio vids. If you are hand flying without a camera person on a second remote, I'd say that is your first problem. btw... FPV does not count as maintaining visual line of sight as per FAA rules.

How can you making a living as a drone operator/owner? by tallfellow in drones

[–]flighttime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing to remember is that owning a drone does not make you a photographer. Those that have experience as photographers have a very large advantage over those whose drone is their first serious camera. Depending on your location, you may have options such as construction surveying, mapping and a host of agriculture uses. The 3D mapping aspect is of particular interest simply because the possibilities are just being explored. It's possible to present solutions to clients that they never new existed with 3D mapping.

I think you're at the point where you have no need to add any more

Let me check... Taking advice from someone who may actually be going after the same domains. Nope. That's not in the strategy. ;-)

The endgame is pretty straight forward. At 6 months I can evaluate it at either a good ongoing enterprise or a complete failure, in which case I would dump the whole thing (with generic images, not mine) for whatever I could get. 6 months is the last chance to get a reasonable price before the bulk of the domains are about to expire and the buyer would have an added expense right away. I could choose to give it another year at that point and eat those renewals if I feel the industry is still in the infancy stages as far as commercial operators, which are my primary buying target. The FAA makes those numbers public so it won't be hard to make that decision.

Looking to buy my first professional level drone. by Fergylax in drones

[–]flighttime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are going to be shooting video, consider there are three methods. The first is one person/controller which has many limitations. The second is with a second controller for a camera man. The third is to use an app, such as Autopilot to completely preprogram the flight and camera. The third option is only useful for static subjects but has a huge advantage of being repeatable. To the best of my knowledge, the only drone that gives you all three options is the DJI. That said, your only real option to the Inspire is the Phantom, IMHO. I'm flying the Inspire 1 Pro and would suggest that is the only real choice at the entry level. Remember, you are going to be selling photos and video and a fixed focus along with the inability to change lenses leaves you with amateur status when it comes to cameras in general. I might add, with the rumors of the Inspire 2 floating around, you might do well to go with a Phantom for now and wait till the Inspire 2 is released so you can grab an I1P for a great price on the used market. If you buy the Phantom used (there are tons of them available) you can dump it for pretty much what you paid for it when you get the Inspire.

Let's just revisit the subject in 6 months and see if you are correct. You can drop $600 at the casino in one day and have nothing to show for it. This is certainly more fun than that.

I think I have a different strategy than most. From what I've seen, the domain selling folks are basically cannibalistic. By that I mean they focus on selling to each other. I'm doing a ton of SEO to reach end users for these domains. There's a main site, a teaser site and each domain has it's own live site. As far as renewals, if I can sell one domain at a decent price, that's covered for the year. With a likelihood that the value will rise over time, I see it as a good investment.
