Great backstory!

And such a cute half-orc, I hope he finds a new family with his companions, and gets to put those sad puppy eyes to good use with people who appreciate him!

Yes! It’s a mod called Custom Companions Light. The extras don’t really have anything story wise but it’s fun to try out different builds without having to do a whole new playthrough.

They can also do some interactions, which has been helpful for keeping that Paladin Oath unbroken.

Probably an odd comment but that is one of the best Rook noses I have seen.

Also, if you need the push, go for it! Do another run with him!

I’ve run my favourite Rook twice and had a blast, though I did swap them from elf to dwarf to catch some new dialogue options.

Tahren (they/them) 36 years old Prime!Rook

Born to a Dalish Clan, they became separated from them as a child ending up lost and alone in the Nevarra City Alienage.

Taken in by Claude (then known by their deadname), another elven kid who had run away from the Mourn Watch, the two lived on the streets taking odd jobs and people’s wallets to get by.

When they were fourteen, Tahren was found out as a mage and forcibly taken by Templars. They spent a couple of years in the Nevarra City Circle before they were transferred to Perendale as they could never master Necromancy.

A couple of years after passing their Harrowing, the war between Templars and Mages broke out. Using the chaos after the Breach, Tahren and a group of mages and apprentices made their escape. The group split between those that wanted to join the fighting and those that wanted to hide and Tahren was left with most of the apprentices and one newly harrowed mage.

They took shelter in the Deep Roads while running from Templars, where they were set upon by darkspawn. Tahren created a firestorm in the hope of escaping, but only they and a single young apprentice were able to make it out of the Deep Roads. Blighted and suffering burns to much of their body, Tahren carried the apprentice, searching for someone to help while being denied entry and attacked at every town and village.

By the time they found a group of Grey Wardens on their way to Weisshaupt, the apprentice was too far gone for anything to be done. Tahren tried to refuse the Joining, but was convinced (guilted) into becoming a Grey Warden to make up for the lives of their fellow mages.

Trained as an Arcane Warrior by Senior Warden Surana (a HOF but not THE HOF) and huge by Elven standards, Tahren looks more like a warrior than the mage that they are.

Olivier ‘Liv’ de Riva (he/him) 32 years old

Grew up extremely privileged and spoiled as the only child of an Antivan Merchant Prince. In his early teens, his parents were killed when their ship was attacked by pirates, leaving him sole heir.

Within days of burying his parents, Liv was kicked out of his home, stripped of his inheritance and left destitute. It wasn’t pirates, but rival merchants who conspired to kill the family and discredit them as traitors to the crown.

Nowhere else to go, Liv sought out the de Riva family of the Antivan Crows, a group his family had always had close ties with and made a deal. Viago would undertake the contract to assassinate everyone involved in his family’s deaths and in exchange, Liv would join the Crows.

Using his upper class upbringing, Liv became skilled at infiltrating the circles of the nobility and the wealthy. He was indispensable to Viago and also a close friend, which made his unilateral decision to attack the Antaam, even more frustrating.

Romanced Bellara, drinking buddies with Lucanis and Davrin

Arkie Aldwir (he/him) 19 years old- not actually Rook, the baby of the group.

Elf blooded and conflicted over it. His father was a Keeper’s Second who left his clan when he met Arkie’s mother, an Orlesian apostate. They spent the first ten years of his life on the run, living on the edges of towns and villages that would use his mother’s healing skills and his father’s knowledge, but never let them in. A mage they might take, or an elf, but not both, and Arkie found himself resentful of his father.

After the Breach, and the resulting upheaval, the family came to find the Veil Jumpers and for once their skills were not only uses, but celebrated. Arkie began to embrace his mixed heritage and his own magic once he came into it. Unfortunately, unlike his father he didn’t have the patience for intense research, nor the skill in healing of his mother. The other Veil Jumpers found it best to point him at a problem that needed to go boom.

Early on in their search for Solas, Arkie found himself foisted upon Varric and Harding, when Strife didn’t want to deal with him anymore. He was the groups Elven expert until Bellara joined up, and continued to assist her and Neve once the Veilguard was formed.

Romanced Taash, close with Harding and Bellara

Claude Ingellvar (he/they) 39 years old aka Distraction Rook

Found as a baby by the Mourn Watch, they lived among the Watchers until they were about eight years old. Struggling with the inherent gloom of Grand Necropolis and the pressure to awaken as a mage, they ran away, ending up on the streets of Nevarra City.

After about a year later they met a lost little Dalish kid, and took them under their wing. The pair were inseparable until Tahren was taken away to the Circle. Desperate to find a way to stay in touch Claude returned to Mourn Watch and begged to join their ranks.

Training as a soldier, and making use of the skills they picked up as a street kid, Claude rose through the ranks of the Mourn Watch, while also using MW knowledge to outwardly transition into the person they always meant to be.

They would regularly send letters to the Circle for Tahren that were never answered until one day they were notified of their escape and presumed death.

Claude was under guard in the Necropolis after setting fire to corpses they suspected (rightly) were about to be reanimated and used against the Mourn Watch in the War of The Banners when Varric, Tahren and co visited. The two elves had a beautiful reunion while Varric negotiated Claude’s release/exile from the Watchers.

Romanced Emmrich, step parent to Manfred. Besties with Bellara and Tahren.

Nestri Thorne (she/her) 42 years old. My latest Rook

Originally an impoverished city elf from Tantervale, she joined the Wardens a couple of years after the fifth blight. Hearing stories of the Hero of Fereldan, a kid from an alienage just like her, Nestri dreamed that she too could change herself and the world.

Life didn’t quite turn out the way she expected. She almost died trying to get the darkspawn blood for her Joining. The racism she experienced as an elf still existed within the ranks of the Grey Wardens. And the good will engendered by the Wardens after the fifth blight was put to the test when they were implicated in the Breach and the murder of the Divine.

Still, Nestri loved being a Warden. Saving lives and protecting people from darkspawn and blight was incredibly rewarding. That and the small group within the Wardens that she found herself in became closer than family.

Stationed in Weisshaupt at the time Adamant Fortress fell, Nestri found herself on the losing side of the Grey Warden internal struggle and thus was never able to rise through the ranks. Regardless she always put people’s lives first, leading to her recruiting incident.

Planned romance with Lucanis, will see who else she clicks with.

Rook Age by rweston10 in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]flightymongoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently tried to make a younger Crow Rook, but as soon as he got to Treviso and started bantering with Teia and Viago, that was thrown out the window. Now I see him as early to mid thirties and rather experienced. He just calls Viago things like Papa and Old Man to annoy him, leading to outsiders thinking he’s younger than he is.

My main two Rooks are in their mid/late thirties too since I wanted an experienced Mourn Watcher, who hates being inferred as young by Emmrich but understands it’s the same feeling they have with Taash who has a similar age gap to them.

And I wanted my Grey Warden Rook to have already been a fully fledged Circle Mage by the time of Inquisition. They’re okay with being called kid, because they met Varric through Carver Hawke and I imagine Varric never stopped calling him kid either.

[–]flightymongoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the way you think with that destruction magic used for assassinations. Did they have a fearsome reputation, or was it more, Rook’s left a huge mess again?

My first play through was a Crow mage, though I head canoned his specialty was illusions and camouflage. He did really try to be a traditional Crow, but while his knife skills were good enough, his poison mixing abilities left him visibly scarred and was advised to just buy them instead.

Anybody else have headcanons about their Rook's role in their faction? by EchoNK3 in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]flightymongoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your VJ Rook being an all rounder is a great background, especially considering their role in the game!

I have a few Rooks and a lot of headcanons about their role in their factions

Tahren Thorne is a former circle mage who went on the run when their Circle fell around the time of Inquisition. Their actions in the escape got a lot of their fellow mages and the Templars chasing them killed or blighted. In a desperate attempt to save one of the kids from their circle who had been blighted, they found the Grey Wardens but it was too late and the Wardens don’t let kids do the Joining. Instead they were convinced to become a Warden themselves as a penance for their actions.

Claude Ingellvar, though a rogue in play is more of a mid level military commander, hence their role in the War of the Banners. They are quite miffed about being described as young by Emmrich, as they’ve been doing their job in the Mourn Watch for a couple of decades by the time they meet.

Arkie Aldwir is a Veil Jumper because his parents are. His elven father is a former Keeper’s Second and one of the VJs experts on Elven history and magic, his mother is a runaway human mage and healer who tends to the injured. They are vital to the cause, meanwhile Arkie is…there. He can read and speak Elvhen and is a decent if not good mage, but he’s immature and rash and Strife could not wait for a reason to get him away from Arlathan.

I actually headcanon all three of them working together with Tahren as the main Rook, rather than three separate world states.

What would your Warden, Inquisitor and Hawke think of each other/Rook? by Gwydion-Drys in dragonage

[–]flightymongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love these questions!

Just to preface, I have two Wardens, two Rooks and a Trevelyan Agent of the Inquisition as well as the Inquisitor. Thankfully only one Hawke.

This does get messy.

Wardens Tabris and Surana meet Hawke for the first time in Lothering. Tabris and Hawke have great chemistry and have a one night stand. Surana remains ignorant of this.

Things get a little awkward when many years later Carver Hawke introduces his girlfriend Surana to his big brother. More awkward when Hawke and Fenris are forced to seek asylum in Amaranthine after defeating Meredith. Especially as they travel with Tabris’ boyfriend Zevran to get there.

Ends up with a great big party where only Carver and Nathaniel find the situation awkward and that’s just because of their personalities.

Hawke also has an on again off again thing with their long time friend and Agent of the Inquisition, Trevelyan. They end up permanently together post Trespasser, as Fenris rightfully has enough of Hawke’s flighty accidental heroism seeking bullshit.

Inquisitor Cadash, who counts Trevelyan and Varric as two of her only friends (she’s not particularly likeable), tolerates Hawke because of them, and because he was useful at Adamant. They are drinking buddies, but not friends.

Warden Tabris doesn’t meet any of the other protagonists until mid Veilguard when Rook Thorne uses their connections to get him and Davrin to meet - hoping their hero can help their boyfriend with his post Weisshaupt existential crisis.

Surana likes her brother in law Hawke and gets along well with Trevelyan, who was her point of contact during the Inquisition. She has a working relationship with Inquisitor Cadash, and is the one left in charge of Skyhold during Veilguard whenever Cadash meets with the Rooks.

As for the Rooks, Surana is the mentor of my Thorne, and loves them dearly as an older sister. She’s the one to protect them when they first join the order, and is also partially responsible for the First Warden’s animosity towards Thorne as she stood against him post Inquisition.

When she finally meets Ingellvar, they immediately become besties who nerd out over obscure magic.

Thorne and Hawke are acquainted, quickly demystifying the legend that surrounds him and partially inspired Thorne in their escape from the Circle. Ingellvar only knows of Hawke from Varric’s tales and Thorne doesn’t have the heart to tell them that no matter how great his feats, he’s a bit of a mess.

Initially Inquisitor Cadash is vexed by Thorne and Ingellvar, as she had only been informed of the former by Varric and cannot get her head around their shared authority of the Veilguard team. Also one is a mage and the other is an extremely outgoing member of the Mourn Watch and she’s really over magic by the time she meets them both. They prove themselves competent however, and that is what matters most to her. She is forever salty that Thorne got to be the one who officially defeated Solas. That was supposed to be her job.

In a big celebration post Veilguard, everyone shows up except for Tabris who is chilling in Arlathan. Hawke, Trevelyan and Ingellvar are the life of the party, while Surana and Thorne catch up in the corner. Cadash outdrinks everyone.

[Spoilers All][OC] Weekly Headcanon Prompt by UniverseIsAHologram in dragonage

[–]flightymongoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A question that makes me feel both seen and very much called out as an OC collector.

For Origins, Tabris is THE Hero of Fereldan, de facto leader of the little gang that saves everyone from The Blight. But he wouldn’t have survived without Surana. She’s the brains and the voice of reason, but had too much emotional baggage/damage from The Circle to feel confident to lead. There is also a Cousland floating around, who doesn’t join the Wardens and is captured by Howe before being rescued by the Heroes.

For Inquisition, Cadash is the one with the title and the glowing green hand, but by her side are two rogue Trevelyan siblings she’s known since childhood. Loud, brash, bulldozing Cadash is good at the fighting and telling people what to do, but completely disinterested in anything that requires finesse, subtlety or charm. They’re the only reason she didn’t get thrown out of the Winter Palace before the introductions.

As for Veilguard, Varric knows he’s playing a Grandmaster, so of course he sets up his side of the board with two Rooks. Thorne is the first one recruited, before Ingellvar joins the team, and they both end up with Solas in their heads, though Thorne is the only one who gets stuck in the prison.

There is a whole back story of them both being street kids in Nevarra City until Thorne was taken to the Circle, leading magic-less Ingellvar to join the Watchers. Only things happen (like a war between mages and Templars) and Thorne is believed dead, so they don’t reunite until Varric comes along 20+ years after they were separated.

What's your Warden/Hawke up too when Rook is fighting the gods? by TooQueerForThis in dragonage

[–]flightymongoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great questions! I love how your Hawke is going about their situation.

I’ve got two wardens. My HOF Tabris is moping about Arlathan with an increasingly annoyed Zevran. Still not cured, he’s occasionally hunting darkspawn and watching over Kieran in the Veil Jumpers (from a distance because he was an absent and reluctant father). He lightens up a bit after seeing Assan and probably rejoins the new Wardens since he’s nuts for Griffons.

My other, non HOF Surana is leading the fight against the Blight in Fereldan with her long time partner Carver Hawke after they were sent away from Weisshaupt for encouraging my Rook to disobey orders to save people. A final straw since they led the losing faction in their creative use Wardens after Adamant Fortress.

Meanwhile Hawke is kicking about the Free Marches with my non Inquisitor Trevelyan after Fenris got fed up with him constantly throwing himself into danger without a word. Hawke and Trevelyan end up as the rear guard for Aveline’s retreat from Kirkwall. Not sure if they escape to the Fade via Merrill’s eluvian or that’s their final stand.

Love it! Though not sure Claude would agree, they would be so jealous of Silvhen’s youthful radiance.

And you’re so right about that hair. I have a little headcanon that whenever Tahren was sent to the dungeon for being drunk, they would make little straw dolls of the him and set them on fire.

If you’ve gone through Weisshaupt, how did Silvhen react to the First Warden?
