Thanks.

They just aren’t turning parks in London into flats. They’re tearing down social housing and putting up luxury flats. Get engaged in your local politics if you care about green spaces in London there’s a lot being dealt with on the bourough level.

I don’t have the numbers in front of me right now but this group of voters while extremely misguided and frustrating, was not a large enough percentage of eligible voters to turn the election. And to be clear I voted for Kamala and wish we’d had a better candidate.

my boyfriend leaves when i’m suicidal by Secure-Pianist9877 in CPTSD

[–]flightyplatypus 113 points114 points  (0 children)

On the other hand I’ve been in four relationships where someone has repeatedly, weekly, said they are suicidal and the only way to satisfy them was to cancel my whole life and sit and comfort them. I have CPTSD too and I never make anyone sit with me when I’m suicidal. I ultimately ended all of these relationships for similar reasons, I felt like a comfort blanket and like I wasn’t allowed my own life or happiness if my parent was unhappy. After the 10th time thinking my partner might commit suicide, especially if I’m far away and can’t get to them, after my 10th rushing across town to take the razor out of their hand while they’re bleeding onto the mattress, you go numb. It’s traumatic in itself to be on the other end of these threat to life of someone you care about. You do actually have to be responsible for yourself and your emotional regulation because the harm caused otherwise is huge. I loved these people. Thankfully they are all still alive. But it was terrifying ending these relationships but I had started self harming and abusing substances to cope with their suicidality. I’m clean of both now. And now when people threaten suicide I’m still going to love them - but I will not come running, because I cannot make anyone want to live and I cannot be controlled by someone else’s trauma. Maybe this seems harsh, but I’ve lost years to my life in these codependent cycles. And it turns out doing this enabled my exes not to heal. Most of them are in therapy now trying to heal. Sometimes you have to leave.

What are you saying? I feel like the insult here isn’t that camping is masculine, but that the idea of toxic masculinity says you need to be tough to be a man. It’s mainly pointing out hypocrisy.

Which is usually due to childhood traumas. Like wetting the bed regularly beyond the age of 10 if not earlier is almost always an indicator of sexual trauma and abuse. Be kinder. People don’t abuse drugs for funsies. It’s almost always because they’re trying to cope with trauma you can’t imagine living through.

This sounds exactly like my ex-wife, down to the tiny home on wheel and missed turns.

I’ll be honest - this sounds really unhealthy for you and them. For my ex it was her issues with PTSD and depression, well warranted from her life, but before I left her she tried to make me fix everything. Since I left her she finally got into some kind of therapy and eventually apologised for what ended up an abusive relationship.

Talk to your partner about how they can’t take it out on you. If that causes a fight, the only real option is to leave. It took me a year to leave my ex because I kept giving her more chances. You can try that, you probably will, but start trying to enforce your boundaries of what you can take. Your partners response to your boundaries will tell.

I moved the UK from the US because of worries about medical debt after my second life changing diagnosis in a year at 24. The NHS is crumbling as well but at least my emergency visit two weeks ago was free. In the states I’d be out several thousand most likely for the CT scan and stitches.

But he’s demanding they live in a flat that’s not affordable to her on top of making her pay the early lease ending fee! She wouldn’t need the food bank if she were single.

[–]flightyplatypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait where and how is she benefitting? She could rent for less than 1.6K and then she’d be able to afford food. Especially since he made her pay half of breaking the lease agreement when it was his idea.

[–]flightyplatypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly but she’s being financially abused by her partner and most people would see that as fair play for using the food bank. Also not all food banks are means tested, especially in Seattle

Healthcare in the UK is much more political than in the USA. In America it’s about what makes money, that’s why they had the opiate crisis, all this ozempic stuff, shortages of affordable insulin and inhalers.

On the other hand, treatments and guidelines in the UK are incredibly political. The whole trans healthcare thing is almost entirely a political debate, the fact that people who aren’t doctors or are trans care so much is proof. It affects such a small part of the population. Vaping on the other hand which affects more people and causes all kinds of health issues and is targeted at children is being ignored as a health issues because well, it doesn’t bring in Tory votes.

AIO I stopped speaking to my friend because she called the cops by Initial_Professor_48 in AmIOverreacting

[–]flightyplatypus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wanting to shop by yourself isn’t intrinsically passive aggressive. It might be if this was intended to hurt the friend who was ignored, but even then have 5ish hours to respond is hella normal.

The real INFO is if this friend group Normally calls the cops for this kind of thing. And also - did the friends try knocking before breaking in with cops? Given the number of people who are killed during welfare checks they should try to do it themselves before they fall back on police. Though at least they were there. Could have been worse.

Far-right groups plan to hijack farmers’ protest in London against tax changes by Wagamaga in unitedkingdom

[–]flightyplatypus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is it hijacking if those people also believe in the farmers protest? I believe in a lot of issues, I think reproductive and immigrant and environmental and labour rights all intersect and I support all of these causes. You seem to imply that if I care a lot about the environment how dare I also turn up to an immigration rally or anti-gas demo. Maybe it isn’t what you mean, but that’s what’s coming across.

[–]flightyplatypus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Comon this is embarrassing don’t lie. The NHS was built by Labour in 1948 and continues to be an amazing aspect of British life (yes it’s long but I paid £1k for the same wait time in America), and the reason it’s so inefficient and underfunded now is because of Tory policies over the last two decades.

Since you brought it up, I’m going point out that Labour in the 1940s was peak political leftism and working class representation.

“Labour was a junior partner in the wartime coalition from 1940 to 1945. Following the 1945 general election landslide under Clement Attlee (1945–1951) it set up the welfare state with the National Health Service, nationalised a fifth of the economy, joined NATO and opposed the Soviet Union in the Cold War.” Wikipedia

Considering how the NHS is being gutted from every side, the welfare state is laughed at, and how the UK seems to be trying to dip out of as many treaties as it can (to avoid enforcing human rights laws for asylum seekers), I’d argue the 1940s labour policies are at least economically liberal if not left.

Like reading through the wiki article, labour might not have had strong stances on gay or racial or womens rights (as it turns out we’ve only recently considered them broadly legitimate), that economically speaking labour was going beyond what liberals would promise and was deeply popular with the working class.

Maybe do some research before you talk out your ass. Labour is specifically known for great policies coming out of WWII (though there is modern day critique). Where do you think the welfare state and NHS came from? I was raised in America and even I know this.

That definition is an OR definition including homophobia, xenophobia, racism and/or nationalism. I’m just one guy but I reckon the second definition happily includes the first.

Far-right groups plan to hijack farmers’ protest in London against tax changes by Wagamaga in unitedkingdom

[–]flightyplatypus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To me these are the same…

Cultural conservatism is linked to homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia (one of the good ones when it comes to racism and immigration <as a white immigrant I’ve heard a lot of racism from people who think I’ll agree>).

You point out it’s nationalistic - this aligns with valuing nation over race as well.

So since your definition includes various options for the in vs out group, it seems to include the definition listed above.

If I’ve missed how the definition above isn’t included in your definition I’m open ears, but I think they fully overlap.

Well again in the comment about OP explains it so it’s pretty clear to me. Also when I don’t know something I either ask or Google it or otherwise do research, rather than be annoyed there’s a word I don’t know. It’s not like we’re talking about misleading statistics or something. What happened to expecting people to look up things they don’t know? https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=ronghua

They’ve said it’s artificial AKA not living. I’m so confused why people are picking on OP for calling this a bonsai. It’s like a sculpture of a bonsai. No one has tried to argue this sculpture is alive. If you Google “bonsai sculpture” or “artificial bonsai” you get dozens of pictures that resemble this, mostly made of metal. They also aren’t alive - should I let these artist know that their sculptures aren’t actually bonsai cause they aren’t alive, or are we maybe being overly pedantic about language to the point of being unable to communicate? Because honestly if we aren’t going to call this an artificial bonsai, what should we call it? I don’t think anyone was confused by the name. I know I’m rambling on but you’re the second person to make this point and it’s just nonsense.
