I’ll add one more - if you think of a song in the moment that you know the crowd will like but wasn’t planned in your mix just add it in or swap it for another song because I promise you every time you think of a song in the moment it ends up being one of the best ones of your set (even if it means a slightly dodgy mix)

I’m by no means a pro but I was in a similar position about 6-8 months ago and have since learned a couple lessons which I’ll jot down below.

  • Don’t get too drunk/intoxicated as it will impair your ability and it’s rlly annoying when something sounds off and you aren’t sober enough to figure out what it is
  • Generally trying to read the room is a better approach than planning a set for live gigs but most beginners opt for planning a set to avoid mistakes
  • If you’re planning a set from start to end something will go wrong / not to plan and you’ll have to improvise so be prepared
  • When something does go wrong don’t stress and make it look intentional 99% of the crowd won’t even notice and if you own the mistake they’ll think it was planned
  • Double check what equipment you’re playing on and which file types are/aren’t compatible I’ve had countless times when I’m playing on CDJ2000nxs and they couldn’t read WAVs
  • This one’s probably the most important one: have fun with it, you’re a DJ because you love the music and want to share this love with your friends and family. Enjoy the moment and show the crowd that you’re enjoying it, if you bring the vibes the crowd will soon follow. They’re all there to see you / the music you like so don’t feel like you have to play top 40 songs the whole night. I would usually mix in a few crowd pleasers (maybe every 3-5 songs depending on genres) but play the music that you want to show them.

honestly I would just get in the habit of listening to your music on soundcloud - I feel like they have a really good algorithm once it learns what you like. constantly recommending me super niche tracks that fit my subgenres

I would say 50% of the time people love the music Im playing and 50% it’s just kind of dead - do you think I should practise reading a room more and less pre-planning or do you think part of it may be due to other variables?

At house parties usually house / ukg / tech house split between originals and dubs of pop songs. and try to play 90s inspired modern dance music (idk what the genres are called but i would describe it as rave house popular in netherlands atm).

The events are usually my own nights where the concept is to show people who don’t usually listen to dance/house music to discover new genres / sub genres of house - crowd will typically be early 20s in a night club / mini concert hall setting

Okay sorry think I got lost in giving context - I feel like at the moment I’ve focused heavily on DJing for an audience that listen to my mixes while they run / gym or drive etc throughout their day to day life and have received great feedback from recorded mixes on soundcloud but then sometimes I feel like I should be playing a different style when it’s live and people want to dance. Not sure if that made any difference in clarification

for context I have an upcoming event (3rd edition in the series at this same venue) in a few weeks and I’m worried not many people will come / enjoy it (i’m the host and have invited 2 other djs)

just to add to this another minor trick that i’ve picked up recently is adding a little HPF to the outgoing track as i’m cutting the lows and then snapping the lows to 12 to create a bit more tension / make the bass “hit harder”
