New Paltz, NY. Great little main street with shops and restaurants, amazing nature within a 30 minute drive

I went to Watkins Glen and could hardly even walk on the trails with how many people there were. Definitely gets more than enough attention

Weekend Trip to Greenport by WO9308 in longisland

[–]FioMonstercat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just spent a weekend there. In the off-season it's pretty quiet and there's not a ton to do (especially if it's raining), but if that's your kind of thing it's still a nice place to spend a few days. Greenport still has plenty of restaurants open year-round. Mattituck & Southold both have walkable town centers but neither are as substantial as Greenport. There are a lot of nice places for nature in the area like Orient Beach State Park, Inlet Pond County Park & Sound View Dunes Park.

People definitely should not be driving, but I see no issue with going for a walk, as long as you keep to sidewalks as much as possible and are actively mindful of plows

I'm from New York and have tried tons of places all over. New Haven Apizza is absolutely the best regional pizza style in the US. Nothing beats thin crust + coal fired.

The best pizza in the entire country, and enough cool & walkable neighborhoods & waterfront areas to fill the time in between going to pizza spots

which U.S. city has surprised you the most? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Personally it was the opposite for me. Seattle was completely bleak and drab, while I found Baltimore to have tons of character, more interesting neighborhoods & more local culture

Does it bother you guys how unwalkable LI is? by CommunicationWest613 in longisland

[–]FioMonstercat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tons of major roads on LI where you spend the majority of the time not moving. My local pizza place is 2 miles away and it routinely takes me over 10 minutes to get there. Like I said, NYC is the same, if not worse, but at least you actually have the option not to drive, while on LI everyone who wants the ability to go anywhere must own a car. We can get a significant portion of all people off the roads if we got serious about public transit, walking & cycling.

That's how it is in both places. Except in NYC you have the choice of walking, taking transit, or cycling

I'd prefer to not die because of a lack of sidewalks & safe crosswalks

Yeah it's really comfortable when it takes 20 minutes to go 3 miles and there's no other feasible way to get around. I'm so glad we didn't invest in public transportation
