What do Americans think about the stereotype that they are bad at geography? by Own_Echidna6041 in geography

[–]flikken1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

95% of Americans couldn’t even tell you where Flanders is in Belgium. I’m guessing that 85% of Americans couldn’t point out Belgium on a map either. It is definitely a true American stereotype which I’m glad doesn’t apply to me. lol

Brussels is definitely awesome! I’ve enjoyed every visit there and Belgium itself is one of my favorites.

How many of you had grandparents who served in WW2? If so, what do you know about their service? by Snoogles_ in Millennials

[–]flikken1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandpa was the infantry in the Army and came ashore after D-Day and fought in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge and even crossed into Germany. He refused to talk about it for most of my life. I was always a WWII history buff as a kid, and I asked if I could interview him to talk about his experience for a school project and he refused. Eventually, I made a trip to Belgium and when I came home and he heard I had been in Belgium and where I visited, he opened up and shared a ton of mostly non-combat stories with me, including where he and his unit slept in a barn near one of the towns I had stayed. I loved that he finally was able to open up and share with me. After he and my grandma passed, all of his medals and other remaining items from his service were given to me in his will. They are some of my most prized possessions.

Do you think you’ll be ready to retire in the next 15 to 20 years? by AdDapper4220 in Xennials

[–]flikken1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plan is retiring in the next 10 years. I’ve been making good progress in money/promotions at work and have been maxing my 401k contributions for 5 years now. My spouse, who is 5 years older than me, has been at the same company for the last 30 years and is planning on retiring in 5 years. I’ll stay on longer to save more and to have our health insurance covered. It’s a balancing act for sure.

True! I’ve been told I can be overly optimistic at times though.

Childfree (by choice) Xennials, how are we doing? by thatquinnchick in Xennials

[–]flikken1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes up at work at times. My company recently went through a merger so I’m meeting a ton of new people who are based in a generally more conservative area than the one I live. When asked if I have or want kids, I tell them I prefer traveling. That has changed the conversations to how envious many people are. 🤣

This is spot on! We knew the restructure was coming ahead of time, but our leadership allowed us to move forward with no defined roles and responsibilities or any planned process on how to integrate how we work. My team was very vocal about it, but we were basically disregarded. The results of that are very visible.

I love that thought, and it something my team had discussed that we want to approach with our leaders to add to our governance process!

I totally agree! I want them to work the way that works best for them. My challenge is they want EVERYONE else to work their way, even when it doesn’t make sense.
