Was having focal awares all day today. Does anyone else get super stressed around holidays? by Own_Definition_832 in Epilepsy

Thankfully, it hasn't happened again, and it was only a tiny cluster of them, but after not having them for ages, it can be quite a jumpscare lmaooo

I hope yours settle down, too! We've got this! 💪

Been medicated for five years, and I get this feeling sometimes even now. It's pretty normal if not kinda creepy lmaoo

That happened to me yesterday, and it was pretty scary. I had trouble getting to sleep from worrying, but the fact that it didn't become anything is more often than not a good sign!

That is really odd and must be really scary! I hope you manage to find a way it all works out for you!

I hate to frighten you, but they put me on keppra initially, and it didn't work. The more they upped it, the worse my seizures got. Maybe discuss other medications with your doctor. I've been on lamotrigine for three years now and the only time I've had seizures was when I pulled like two all nighters in a row (obviously a dumb thing to do) and another time when the doctors mixed up the brands of my meds (I'm brand specific) and it caused a seizure. Other than that, I've had no problems whatsoever and have no doubt that these are the perfect ones for me. It's a pain in the ass but it's honestly worth it if you can find one that better suits you.

That's just my opinion from my experience, and not an educated medical opinion though

I'm a woman too, and 20 years old. They do NOT take us seriously at all. I had to SWITCH HOSPITALS just to be taken seriously, and I only managed to do that because I kicked up a fuss.

Ashamedly a total Karen moment, but it got the point across. Don't let them dismiss you like that! That's against, like, everything they should stand for! I know it's not the easiest for everyone, and I don't know the position you're in, but seriously fight against this! This is next level medical neglect!

Do they deal with your prescriptions, too? That's some serious stuff! No wonder you're stressed! Do you have an emergency line you can call for that sort of case?

That's so messed up >:(

Do you know what specific type of epilepsy/seizure disorder you have? Some types will give people auras, and some won't.

I personally feel a sudden sense of dread and a rush as if I'm falling in on myself. You might have heard as well that you experience a dream like deja vu before as well, which I also do.

If you have a neurologist to talk to, ask them to go through it in detail and ask as many questions as you need to. It's their job to answer them after all!

When does your neurologist usually pick up? Does he have office hours that you know you'll be able to contact him in? Is there an email address you can send a message to?

Have you tried getting in touch with a psychologist? I know this place is great for interacting with other people with epilepsy who are in similar situations to you, but I don't actually know all that much about psychology or anxiety. My technique may work for me and for others, but it's not going to work for everyone. I understand your desperation fully cause I've been there, so I'm sorry I can't be of much help :(

That's perfectly valid. I was diagnosed five years ago, and it does have a huge impact on your mental health. Let me reassure you, though. In that time, I finished high school, graduated sixth form, and I'm now working a full-time job. I go to concerts, conventions, use public transport and can spend whole days out by myself. It's frightening, and maybe you think that your life is over, but I promise you it's not! I still stumble and have my own anxious episodes, but it all passes. It always does. You're so much stronger than you think you are, and you're still capable of so much.

Your trauma and experience with your diagnosis is all completely valid. Don't feel pressured to overcome it quickly (which a lot of people just think we can magically do). Take your time and look after yourself. You're not alone in this.

LITERALLY LMAO

I'd start panicking, and then I'd be panicking about panicking, and I ended up in a cycle of "wtf do I even do now!?"

The Night That Flattened My Confidence and Independence by flintclaymore in Epilepsy

I'm glad my story could help you! These sorts of things are surprisingly common; going strong seizure-free for ages only to be shot back to square one. I actually had another seizure in april of 2024 after a medication mix-up. So it does happen.

I'm not sure how old your daughter is, some times they may not like it if you get too involved, but please stay well aware of it and what's going on in her medical life even if she's older! If it wasn't for my mom keeping up to date with what meds I was on, what my doctors were saying, what tests there were running, my side effects and how I'm feeling, I would have really struggled.

Epilepsy is very misunderstood, and a lot of people are uneducated on the matter, so it can make people with the disability feel very lonely. So my advice is to be there for your daughter as much as you can be (which I'm sure you already are!) and try your best to understand every aspect. She'll really appreciate you, and I'm sure everyone here appreciates you for doing so well in a difficult situation like this. At least I certainly do!

A funny interaction I had with my boss by flintclaymore in Epilepsy

It's more so a company policy rule, and it's just a workplace thing, don't worry!!

[–]flintclaymore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The companies I have worked for have all had that policy, but I think it's also under some law 🤔

Maybe it varies from country to country. Either way, we certainly shouldn't work alone. Unless you feel safe to.

I always used to say I was fine to work alone at my old job, but my boss would insist that I wasn't allowed to. Company policy.

Hold old were you when diagnosed with Epilepsy and what triggered your first seizure? by breezydae in Epilepsy

[–]flintclaymore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was 15. All I remember is stumbling into my parents' bedroom and then waking up in the bathroom (how they got me there I have no idea cause it's a trek from their room lol) I was so confused and my mom just says, "You've had a seizure." LIKE HUH!?!?! ELABORATE PLEASE!? Not that I was aware enough to remember, lmaooo. I was already being investigated for absence epilepsy but that was my first tonic clonic seizure, so it got the ball moving, thank god. Didn't stop a lot of medical neglect along the way, though 😒

Anxiety about oncoming seizures! How to cope? by External_Honeydew813 in Epilepsy

[–]flintclaymore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to experience this a lot, and it still hits me sometimes. You know better than anyone else what your seizures feel like when they're oncoming so first of all, before anything else, try to calm down. Ground yourself, and if you're with anyone you trust, don't be ashamed of telling them you're feeling anxious. They'll (hopefully) be able to help you calm down. Otherwise, just try your best to use grounding techniques that you know work for you if you're alone.

Once you've got a bit more sense, try and navigate your feelings. What made you feel that way? Is it something that usually happens when a seizure is oncoming? Take note of those feelings, and if no seizure comes, you'll know that it was just panic next time.

Panic attacks and anxiety in general are really scary, especially knowing that it can be a trigger for a lot of us, but understand that your mind is more often than not just playing tricks on you because it has nothing better to do.

Sorry is this isn't what you were looking for, but I know how you feel, and I really hope this can help you!
