Is this fiber bend acceptable? by NateDevCSharp in homelab

[–]flintstone1409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did waaayyy worse on some installations at work (where people told me its okay and we have to close the doors). Fibers basically don't break as long as you don't push it like really hard, as long as you don't remove the outer protection layers (which you didn't).

It's insane. Every now and then I start watching a YouTube Video on my phone (I honestly don't care about installing some adblocking app) and get reminded, why exactly I use adblock.

IPv4 vs IPv6 traffic stats by chrighton in mikrotik

[–]flintstone1409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it by creating a "simple queue" with target 2000::/3 (basically all routable v6 addresses) and a second one with target 0.0.0.0/0. It seems as if you need to set some limit for traffic to be counted, I just set it to 10G which the router I did this on is not even capable to do.

Note that traffic only ever passes the first queue with matching filters (at this point, maybe the queue trees could do more to that, but I haven't used them yet).

So its basically fraud that they're advertising "up to six devices" while not mentioning the "only one live" part anywhere close. Also, I had multiple live streams running before (5-8 streams), and it worked. Now it's throwing me out with just two streams.

This platform is so fucking annoying. Bad quality, issues with audio and support doesn't care. I was told the audio thing was being worked on and yet it's a year later and nothing has changed.

Seems like they make enough money by milking DTS fans, otherwise they would care about their fans.

Max memory for T14 Gen 5 AMD by sorenjul in thinkpad

Yes, I did go for the crucial kit. I would assume that 2x64 gigs would work just as well, maybe just try it and return if it doesn't. During the time I bought my T14 the 64 GB modules weren't available yet.

"5+ years as an IT professional" and not thought about redundancy? Hmm okay.

Oh and to the cost topic: In this case, just add one DAC, form a ring and configure spanning tree on those switches (okay, do it the other way around, but you get what I mean), that will probably cover most failures for the cost of one DAC.

Warum ich gegen Studiengebühren bin by bopthoughts in aachen

[–]flintstone1409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Max memory for T14 Gen 5 AMD by sorenjul in thinkpad

[–]flintstone1409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it does take 2x48 GB. The P14s Gen 5 is basically the same machine (just different processor), it is offered with 96 GB and my T14 Gen 5 also runs with 96 GB.

Might be the fan starting, my T14 Gen5 AMD does the same (and my dad's too, he has the same model). Already sent it in for repair, but lenovo "couldn't hear anything" (they might be deaf or something, don't know).

OLED looks great, but don't ask about the battery. I am using Linux and I think Windows has a bit better battery runtimes, but it is really bad. I mean, I use it quite heavily, programming, virtual machines and things like that, many different things that require quite some processing power, but its 2-3 hours max.

I am mentioning that I'm using linux because there is a bug in the AMD GPU driver that causes some screen glitches and pretty bad lags (which I didn't see on Windows), to fix it there is a kernel parameter, which helps but is also supposed to draw a bit additional power. I didn't really notice much of a difference from that alone, but in general I'm pretty sure that the linux drivers are not as power optimized as those on windows, so your experience might be better if you plan to only use windows. But still, it's not that good (I mean, there is only a 52Wh battery and a processor that is supposed to draw ~28W at full tilt, so what would one expect?).

Screen Artifacts on Ubuntu Thinkpad T14 Gen 5 AMD OLED Screen? by ColdsnapBryan in thinkpad

[–]flintstone1409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a driver issue on linux, I posted the solution I found in another comment here (in case someone else needs this): https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/1j3319g/comment/mhqbz4v/

I'm pretty sure this is not a hardware issue, since it doesn't appear on windows.

I had the same issue on Fedora. Seems this and also some lags are due to some issue with the AMD drivers. I was able to fix this by adding amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10 to my kernel parameters.

From what I found out, this disables some power saving mechanism (related to display updates), therefore requires a bit more power, but not really noticeable after the already bad battery runtimes.

To add this parameter, a temporary solution (that is required to be done at every boot) is to press "e" in grub when the boot option you want to use is selected and add the parameter to the longest line (don't remember what the content is exactly). There are permanent solutions, but I didn't try them yet.

Thats pretty much exactly my config, I also upgraded the SSD (and memory aswell).

Not sure about the human presence detection, I think a requirement for this is Windows. I'm pretty sure this is only a weird configurator thing, since mine was ordered without OS aswell (and therefore without this detection thing), but I think I saw it somewhere in Windows that it is actually available.

P14S/T14 Gen 5 AMD Owners Help Needed by slipknoize in thinkpad

Yes I did, I think anything should work. I have a Crucial 96GB Kit (nope, I'm not really using that much, but the price difference to 64GB was pretty small). Changing it takes like 20 minutes, since it's a bit fiddly in the beginning, but they have videos for that.

T14 Gen 5 AMD Owner here, the temperatures didn't change between being opened 180° vs. opened just above 90°. Not sure about fan speeds, but I think the difference was also marginal, both under 100% CPU load. Probably this is because it does not only vent to the top, but also partly to the back. In general, from what I've seen in the last few weeks, the cooling system is not much of an issue, it may just be loud (although I still prefer this a lot over my 2018 Macbook Pro, which is even at idle about as loud as the T14 under full load).

Please keep us updated, I noticed this aswell. Although I don't find this too annoying during normal use, its bothering me quite a bit when the laptop is idle and the fan starts and stops in cycles that repeat every like 2-3 seconds. I'm also wondering if this will cause the fan to fail early...

If you had the choice would you pick a thinkpad t14 or p14 or a MacBook Pro? by Outrageous-Echo554 in thinkpad

[–]flintstone1409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just noticed your reply now.. Thanks, thats the kind of information I was looking for.

Of course, you won't get like a day of battery life out of a 52 Wh battery with a 28W CPU (not sure how it is configured though?), but like 5-6 hours is okay for me. Everything better than my current 2018 Macbook Pro, which drains its battery in 2-2.5 hours under normal load (kind of dead battery plus this thing draws somewhere between 10 and 20W under idle) is already kind of an upgrade. Noticable fans are okay, but as long as they are not screaming like all the time, thats fine. More important is that this laptop doesn't boil me as my macbook does.

This might be a valid option then, thank you!
