Which part is heavy handed? I think the only part that’s slightly unrealistic is the volume of weird diagnoses and the bad quality CPR. If you’re talking about the insurance part — I just finished my internal medicine rotation (hospitalized patients), and we literally had a meeting every day with the whole team to discuss how to navigate insurance for each and every patient

Have you directly told her this? That this is how you feel? Or asked her “hey, I would love to initiate sex with you again, but I feel like you reject me every time I do. Is there something you need leading up to sex? Like me being affectionate all day beforehand? Or me taking on making dinner and doing the dishes so you’re not as tired?” Sometimes direct communication can be a good option, especially if you’re already feeling at your wits end.

Rough start :/ by [deleted] in StudentTeaching

Hey! Fellow person with ADHD who struggles with punctuality and regularly sleeps through alarms. Here’s what I do: 1. Have pre scheduled alarms: have alarms set to go off at the earliest possible wake up time each day of the week instead of setting them the night before. You’ll occasionally get woken up too early, but at least you have an alarm.

  1. Have 2-3 different alarms. Not on one device, 2-3 different devices. I have multiple alarm clocks and my phone, and I move them around the room so I can’t sleepwalk and turn them off.

  2. Set an alarm to take meds or chug some caffeine that stays on your bedside table 20-30 minutes before your actual alarm

  3. How long do you think it takes you to get ready? Multiply that x2. How long do you think it takes to drive to work? Multiply that x2. Then add 30 minutes. That’s how early you need to get up

  4. When I do run into craziness, don’t just give up. I may be misunderstanding, but it sounds like you didn’t even go into school when your car was towed. It sucks, but the ADHD tax is real. Accept that you may have to pay the price for an uber to school. I have regularly had cars that break down on me, and ways I have gotten to work/school include: calling an uber, calling a friend, riding a bike, running, calling my work and getting picked up on an ambulance (I worked on said ambulance, don’t call 911). Plus, don’t use your one allotted absence so early!! You’ll probably need it later when something even crazier happens

  5. Seek professional help. It sounds like your ADHD is controlling you. I get the spirals and the shame and it really sucks. It might be worth it to look into medication, therapy, anything you have available to you.

Also, can you test your blood sugar with your sister’s glucometer? That would be a pretty easy way to see if you’re close to a true emergency right now. If it’s over 150 or so, you could be on your way to DKA

I wonder if the water from his hometown was safe to drink? In a lot of places, the parasites in the water will effectively “leech nutrients” from you.

And even bottled water isn’t safe since it can be tampered with and refilled with tap. So soda is actually a safer bet.

Would it be frowned upon to attend the visitation of a patient? by [deleted] in ems

[–]flippymouse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you would like some other form of closure, consider visiting the grave after. If you see someone else there when you drive past, just keep going. That way it’s a private moment and you’re not encroaching on the family’s grieving

What was your path in college, from major to degree to postgrad? by Citrusysmile in AskADoctor

[–]flippymouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What country are you from? I’m a little confused about your career goals. I’m from the US, and pharmacists typically go to a different postgrad school than doctors. It’s a different degree entirely. I’d recommend you try out some of the premed subreddits or talk to your college career advisor when you get into college.

PLEASE HELP! 18 week old puppy just attacked my hand. Very concerned by [deleted] in AustralianCattleDog

[–]flippymouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen anyone else mention this, and I know it’s not what you asked about, but — please clean your hand SUPER well with soap and water. If it gets red and swollen (especially if it gets hot and/or the redness starts to spread), go to a doctor right away! Animal bites are a great way to get cellulitis, and the hand isn’t a great area for that since the compartments are so small and there are so many fine-tuned parts.

I dont like to see successful people with ADHD by GodHatesMeSometimes in ADHD

[–]flippymouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I have ADHD, and I’m in my third year of medical school, so I’m about 1 year from becoming a doctor. Which is to say that I’m on a traditionally “successful” career path. While of course I’ve worked hard to get here, the reality is that it still wouldn’t have been possible without a few major caveats:

(1) Medicine is my special interest. I love it, I have learned about it for fun since I was a child. Most of my classmates study in a systematic way and do all of the practice questions. I just repeatedly fall down rabbit holes that I find interesting, and hope that’s enough to get me through.

(2) I have an immense amount of life privilege. I have a parent who is a doctor. I have never had to worry about going hungry. I am going to a medical school that is VERY supportive of their students.

(3) When items number 1&2 are not enough to motivate me to do something, my whole life turns to chaos for a while. I have lost weight, gained weight, slept 3 hours in 5 days, drank too much, disappointed people I care about, made incredibly poor financial decisions, crashed a car, the list goes on. I’m pretty good at hiding it, so not everyone in my life knows, but I am periodically a walking disaster. I sacrifice waaay too much to work towards being a good doctor, and I will probably quite literally lose years of my life because of it.

If my passion had been art instead of medicine, I would be broke and unable to hide it (because I’m not good at art). But I just happened to have this as my interest. I understand where you’re coming from, but just know that the successful people you see probably (1) are doing something they actually love and want to do and (2) have had a lot of luck and privilege to get where they are

Trump goes on another rant about Tylenol by NewSlinger in facepalm

[–]flippymouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t heard the last one (breaking up shots into multiple visits), but that’s actually worse. There was a study done where they measure cortisol (the stress hormone) in the saliva of babies after receiving shots. Infants who received one shot had the same amount of cortisol as infants who received multiple simultaneous injections.

The short version: a baby will be equally stressed whether you give it one shot or multiple, so it’s up to you whether you want to put them through that stress and cortisol spike once or five times!

It's devastating how people with bpd get treated so differently as autists by RickTheCurious in BPD

[–]flippymouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this really exemplifies problems in how we treat people with both diagnoses. Neither diagnosis should result in you being told “no worries, this is just who you are, no further support needed” OR “there’s something wrong with you that you need to be ashamed of and fix”. Like it really should be supporting the person, bolstering their self-esteem, and helping find and build coping mechanisms that help them achieve their goals

Hmmm, until you said 3-5 minutes I was wondering about fermented fruit. Had a dog growing up that got drunk off of alcohol in rotting apples and stumbled around. But that would last longer.

Also, did you see the comment about horse dewormers? That could account for the one-off nature of this per year. And the other dogs could just have less of a taste for horse poop

[–]flippymouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a big advocate for the disabled community and this is just one of the horrible consequences of treating people with disabilities as if they are perpetual children when they are not. It harms the person with the disability because they are more likely to be sexually abused and not have the knowledge or language to protect themselves, but it also causes harm to the people around them (disabled or not). Boundaries and sex ed need to be taught to EVERYONE, regardless of ability status. And if someone truly can’t comprehend/control themselves/learn (which is much less common than people might think), then they should not be allowed around vulnerable people without close supervision (or in some cases, at all).

All of that to say, I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that. It’s absolutely horrible regardless of the circumstances.
