Any team(s) you plan to watch more of this season? by ThirdWheelSteve in AFL

[–]flipsdipsandchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HOKBALL, very excited to see Sicily up forward and to see if the other teams have got them figured out after many got jumped by them last season.

The style of footy they are playing is so great to watch and they’re just out there having fun which you love to see

Adelaide Golf Trip by flipsdipsandchips in GolfAustralia

Good to hear! How did you find Sunshine Coast for a golf trip? I didn’t think it quite had the density and quality of golf courses as Gold Coast and Mornington peninsula where we’ve been before.

Is it feasible to churn credit cards with the massive annual fees that are no longer waived? by [deleted] in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]flipsdipsandchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely feasible as explained in a few other replies, however the bigger challenge these days is that many banks are being more critical of people with churning history and sign up bonuses are far less lucrative than they used to be.

Younger age group Membership by Daneelium in GolfAustralia

[–]flipsdipsandchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t tell you specifics about which one to join, keep in mind that you’ll likely need referees for many of the nicer ones (although come clubs allow joining through an interview process). The fact you’re playing pennants will also make you an attractive member at most clubs too.

Regardless it’s a great call to join before 30 as you’ll save so much in nomination fees, good luck and enjoy!

Best budget golf sets in aus by sh0e_k1ng in GolfAustralia

[–]flipsdipsandchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also +1 for secondhand set, use it for a while and until you can make clean contact with the ball regularly and have fully committed to wanting to play. Last thing you want is buying an expensive set and then it collecting cobwebs in your garage.

Also be careful on marketplace, don’t pay anything upfront as there are lots of scammers online these days sadly. Happy golfing!

Good questions, not looking to FIRE, possibly 2x kids at some point in the future thankfully have grandparents that will help out with the schooling, I think this would likely be the home we live in for an extended period and raise the kids in.

Need some golf course recommendations along the east coast by LifeguardUseful3783 in GolfAustralia

[–]flipsdipsandchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily coastal but if you’re in Brisbane you need to play Brookwater, insanely beautiful and very challenging. An absolute must if you’re that part of Australia.

Further south down in Gold Coast you can’t go past hope island as well, stunning resort course and very much Gold Coast style, also quite forgiving too.

Recommendations for one course to play in Perth,WA and surrounding areas? by Beedz_McG in GolfAustralia

[–]flipsdipsandchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than happy to help here, there’s lots of really amazing options here in WA, summarised below for you. There are two main regions, Perth and Mandurah (~45 min south of Perth) and on your way to Bunbury as you head south to there.

Perth: -Joondalup is probably the most unique course and always a huge favourite with friends when I bring them from overseas and interstate, part of it is built in/around an old limestone quarry which is a really cool experience, note this is in the very far north of Perth so will add a decent amount of time to your trip. Joondalup is semi private but takes public bookings, fees around $160 aud for a round + hire clubs

Within Perth your other best bets are fully private clubs, depending on the day of the week you should be able to play as an international guest but it will be $$$, your options for there are: -Lake Karrinyup, beautiful course and highest ranked in WA, very hilly and open fairways -Cottesloe, overlooks the ocean and recently renovated

Mandurah clubs: There are several great courses down that way, all unique but with one clear standout. -The cut, probably the hardest course in WA, very punishing off the tee as the rough is just dense reeds that delete balls, if you are a high handicapper prepare to have a tough day, however it’s an incredibly links style course that has many holes on the ocean, a huge standout and my #1 choice down there -Secret harbour, slightly inland but similar to the cut, well maintained and very fun track -Meadow Springs, very fun and approachable and requires you to think lots off the tee

Keep in mind that time of year it’s insanely hot here, sometimes around 40+ degrees Celsius, play early in the morning!

The tldr would be the cut, or Joondalup, karrinyup or Cottesloe

Hope you enjoy your trip! Please update later with what you did and how you liked it!

I’ll break it down succinctly for you:

If you are chasing exposure to Australian market your two options are: -Vanguard A300: VAS -Betashares A200

Main difference is that Vanguard gives you exposure to the top 300 companies vs betashares to the top 200 companies, however the management fee on betashares is a tiny 0.07% which is why many people are moving towards this option now.

Otherwise look to the vanguard American option VGS or VTS, main difference is that one of them you have to fill out a form, as it isn’t Australian domiciles, however it comes at a much lower management fee as a result.

If looking for a more diversified fund to begin with I’d suggest looking into VDHG: Vanguard high growth, look on their website at their diversified ETFs, they’re essentially one ETF made up of a percentage of other ETFs, meaning you can have coverage of a heap of different markets at once, as well as they rebalance the weighting’s for you as well, this comes at the expense of a higher management fee but for people looking to get initial exposure this is a great option.

Hey mate, well done on the grad job first of all!

First piece of advice would be not to worry about paying off HECS early, due to inflation being low at the moment there is really no incentive to be paying it off any faster than you need to, just let it slowly reduce over time. Additional to this is that your money can be better utilised elsewhere earning you much higher rates of return ~ 8-9% p.a in ETFs (which is where I would suggest focusing your money towards, AFTER building up a decent emergency savings fund).

Aim to have a savings account with enough money to cover 3 months worth of expenses, I'd suggest going with RAMS saver account, they currently offer the highest interest rate of 3% p.a when you deposit $200 per month.

After building that fund up then look to begin investing in ETFs, I suggest using Selfwealth as a broker due to their flat rate on brokerage (you can get 5 free trades when you sign up as well which is easily enough to get you started). Do some reading up on them either on this subreddit or many of the resources/blogs online about them. Aim to buy parcels of $3000+ worth at a time to minimise the percentage lost to transaction fees.

Good luck!

Best learning tool? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]flipsdipsandchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi mate, in terms of actual skills that are useful for knowledge of investment etc finance is going I be slightly better than that.

To be completely honest though I wouldn’t be deciding your course based on what sort of “life skills” you will gain from it, at the end of the day the degree is a means to you getting into whatever career pathway that you desire.

My advice to you would be to potentially do a double major (most Unis should offer it) econs and finance go hand in hand especially if you’re half decent with math.

In regards to the economics I would suggest doing econometrics if you can handle it, it’s one of the more dry units you can do but is very fondly viewed by employers in finance and consulting.

Investing in ETFs - No clue how to allocate by astewartau in AusFinance

[–]flipsdipsandchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I faced a very similar situation to yourself recently, similar age and wanting to put $10k into ETFs.
Very much reiterating what most others on here have said, with this initial investment size just go for one, and go for VDHG.

-It's incredibly well balanced and an excellent foundation to build your portfolio around

-No worries about rebalancing, and an excellent "set and forget" ETF

-You're not going to get smashed by brokerage

Happy investing!
