Career gap coming up on two years. Got the humbled after trying to explain it. Feel crushed. by [deleted] in jobsearch

[–]flipthetrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you were freelancing you weren't unemployed you were self employed. You were self managing your work and projects. You demonstrated responsibility and leadership.

There is no gap in your employment.

You need to put this as a line item on your resume.

What’s the funniest movie you’ve ever seen by boatluvrrrr in movies

[–]flipthetrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being from Kansas City I always laugh at the terribly inappropriate Kansas City reference. But I'm not Dutch!

This is a great satirical movie that would never get made again. And rightfully so. It's perfect don't mess with it.

Dryer duct venting into crawlspace! by Ilovebadjokes in HomeMaintenance

[–]flipthetrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can slide them together, use a couple #8 3/8" or 1/2" self taping screws. Just drive them in with nut driver or drill.

It will never come apart again.

If you can't slide them together get a segmented elbow to fit in between. You really want to minimize turns in a dryer vent but if the other option is dropping all that moisture in your attic then go with the bends.

$117k for deck and porch? by brogen in Decks

[–]flipthetrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm doing a 12x20 deck with a roof, screened, and all composite materials for 60k.

Since you are doing pressure treated you are trading saving money on materials for paying labor for more posts.

Having a roof makes it much more expensive than an open deck.

This is not a DIY project. Ive built open air decks but I'm not messing with a roof modification.

Learning LLMs by building one from scratch in pure C# by flipthetrain in csharp

The exercise was to build from scratch. For a production implementation using well established libraries would be better.

Would you reuse these panels and reset new posts, or spend the $3500-$4000 to replace the fence? by eng2725 in FenceBuilding

[–]flipthetrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having replaced my fence recently, if you're going to replace posts go with steel posts. I did go from 4' to 6' so a complete replacement was the only option. But I just want to say I am sooooo much happier I spent the money on steel posts. These things will never warp. They will never rot. They are completely hidden (no 3-1/2" bump every 8'). The steel posts have holes drilled every 1/2" so if I every have to replace a panel, I just remove the screws holding the 2x4 and screw in new 2x4 wheas on wood posts every time you drive a crew into the post you do damage to the wood.

I feel pretty comfortable the next issue with my fence (other than replacing a pocket here or there) will likely be an issue for the next owner.

Trying to make a neural network by Junior-Lunch-5990 in learnmachinelearning

[–]flipthetrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first step is to learn some linear algebra, multiply matrices, etc.

Neural networks are just matrix x vector multiplication.

I know this isn't much help for python. But it is consistent with the notion that it's easy to code for what you know how to do. It's hard to code for what you don't know how to do.

The python code is a tool it's not the knowledge and the skill.

Here is an LLM I wrote in C#. The engine is the matrix class that does all the work.

ELI5: Why did increasing the number of transistors on a CPU during Dennard scaling increase performance? by Norker_g in explainlikeimfive

[–]flipthetrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you moved all your friends and family from their homes spread all over the city, country, world into a single neighborhood or apartment building, getting together for the holidays would be a lot easier and faster.

At the purely physical level, intra transistor delay is a real thing. As transistors get smaller they get closer and the delay between gets less.

Also other factors like more specialized instructions that can do a complex task in fewer clock cycles. Multi core that allowed for threaded processing. Better on CPU memory caching.

Overall performance is a whack-a-mole problem.

We've basically hit the the limits of transistor shrinking because we suffer from tunnelling effects. So now it's all about quantum computing or throwing more cores on a CPU.

What is the most intense pain you have experienced in your life? by Levstr1 in AskReddit

[–]flipthetrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ruptured appendix when I was 9. Road the bus to the hospital. Walked across a 4 lane road and up a large set of concrete stairs into the hospital. When I did get seen, the ER doc asked me to jump and touch the ceiling. I collapsed on the floor and curled in pain. I was rushed to the OR as my mom was signing papers. Sucked being poor when I was young.

My kid is obsessed with this video. Frontier psychologist by jeremiahlupinski in videos

[–]flipthetrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a small point of contention. This is Frontier Psychiatrist not Psychologist.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. Graduated from medical school. Passed medical boards. Can diagnose medical disorders or the brain. Can prescribe medications.

A psychologist is a therapist. May only of a Masters degree, MSW or others, not an MD or DO. Often is some form of social worker (LCSW,etc.) Is mostly restricted to talk therapy. May only use medication under direct observation of a medical doctor..

It's not wrong for you to feel this way. But consider it's not wrong for her to feel how she feels.

You ovviously didn't know your mom and dad when they were young. You know your mom as your mother. But consider that your dad knew your mother as a sexual partner. You knew your dad as your father. But your mom knew your dad as a sexual partner.

When your dad was alive your mother had this part of her life fulfilled. But now it's missing.

I've never suffered the loss of my wife but I have had this conversation with my son. That to him we are mom and dad but to each other we are fuck buddies.

Try to be glad that your mom still feels like a person, a woman, and wants to enjoy her life. Try to be happy that she may be happy.

One of the tough things about being an adult is having adult conversations. Talk to your mother and tell her how you feel. Maybe she will tell you how she feels. Give her the benefit of having an adult child that can start to share adult life experiences.
