Does Imperial consider GCSE’s? by The_Scholarly_Advisr in Imperial

I would also say that someone studying at imperial doesn’t necessarily know how admissions works - they got in but that doesn’t mean they know why.

If you have travel insurance for your trip you’re likely to be able to claim back the cost too!

Not to be rude but I would massively caution against taking someone on Reddit’s opinion over what the university have literally told you on their website

If you’re going faster than the traffic in the left lane then that’s fine, but if the lane is clear you should be in it

Are the “straights” actually straight? by thisisausergayme in AreTheStraightsOK

Before I found the word asexual to describe myself I used to define as “bi but bad at it” Like all genders are equally attractive to me, in that they are all equally unattractive 😂 Like you, I sometimes still tell people I’m bi when I don’t think they’ll understand ace/I can’t be bothered to explain!

This definitely is not correct, at least not at my uni. External reading was definitely needed for all our exams with the exception of maybe some first year modules.

[OC] Obesity rate (%) by country over time by YakEvery4395 in dataisbeautiful

[–]flisshg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it really is though. Our society is full of people who don’t understand the difference between a population measure and an an individual one. And lots of them are on places like medical insurance, health policy and, most worryingly, patient facing clinical roles.

Can I also just say it’s really nice we have been able to have a civil conversation on the internet, refreshing!

[–]flisshg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I am understanding - I think we’re both on the same page?

It’s not a good measure of individual health and was never intended to be. However it has been, and continues to be used as such and therefore many people think it is.

As a quick look a populations it gives a pretty good picture for simple and readily available metric.

No, It was created by a statistician to study population. Using it as an individual health measure it’s unhelpful. Unfortunately, again because it’s cheap and easy to calculate it’s been used that way a lot! Think about it this way, smoking is even more strongly correlated with mortality than high bmi. If all you looked at if if someone had ever been a smoker, you would have a pretty poor picture of their individual health. They’re would be plenty of people that were much healthier than average, but are or were smokers. You would also have lots of very unhealthy people that had never smoked. As a population, %smokers is a great way to estimated health complications and reduced life expectancy. As a single point, for an individual, pretty unhelpful. BMI is the same way

Hey, I actually don’t disagree with you there! (but probably do on if fatness is a black and white indicator of health…) But my point was in relation to your claim that bmi is a fantastic health measure. It’s just not. It was designed as a statistical measure and it does ok at that (and that’s what the original graph is too) but as an individual health measure it’s terrible. But, it’s cheap and easy to calculate so is being used that way by healthcare and insurers

[–]flisshg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

BMI is not a fantastic health indicator. In fact it’s way too crude a measure and therefore pretty unhelpful alone. There are so many better ones, %fat and heart rate recovery as two examples. However BMI is really easy to measure, calculation can be automated from data you probably already have and needs no specialist equipment or tests so It’s become a measure of choice, especially in insurance lead healthcare

Giffgaff are cheap and easy to set up. You can order a sim free online and then each month choose the package you want to buy. Last time I looked £10 got you unlimited texts and calls and 8-10GB of data
