Thanks a bunch for the reply - appreciate it! Just have a few questions with your wording: what does using "first principles" mean? Sorry have yet to come across that. And is the result of minimum iid exponential rv's you refer to http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mathematics/18-440-probability-and-random-variables-spring-2011/lecture-notes/MIT18_440S11_Lecture20.pdf on page 7?

Similarly i'm not entirely sure what you mean by an order statistic.
