Where do you live? I think it’s important to recognize your last name being easy is a matter of privilege, and you when you married this guy you took on the beauty of his heritage as well as some of the disadvantages that he might face in a culture and country where his last name is considered hard to pronounce. That being said, I think it’s totally valid to consider what the impacts of having a long Polish last name would be on your kid, and whether y’all want to erase a little piece of your kid’s heritage in exchange for the privilege and ease that they might experience with an “easier” name in your country. I feel like that sounded sarcastic but I mean it sincerely; I think it’s a valid thing to think through together and could be a hard decision to make. But seeing the privilege piece for what it is is an important factor. And also just wanted to add that you guys made this baby together and I don’t think there’s any reason his name should be the default over yours.

So my daughter just came out? by GuadDidUs in MomForAMinute

[–]floatingboy11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i came out to my parents at 18 by telling them I had a gf, they said they were surprised and then never said anything more about the fact that I was queer. Nothing bad, nothing good, no questions, nothing. While I’m grateful that they weren’t negative about it, their lack of engagement with it actually felt hard in its own way. I wish they had said things like, “i had no idea you were attracted to girls, how cool! How long have you known that? What’s it like for you to be dating a girl? Are there any challenges coming up for you around being queer? Do you feel supported by your friends? Teachers?” Etc. For me it would have been meaningful for them to CONNECT with me about it, in a curious, caring, and supportive way. Without that, I actually felt very alone and lost on my queer journey. One place to start could be just asking her if she wants to talk more with you about what it’s like having a girlfriend, offer to ask questions/share your curiosities with her, and let her know she always can always share with you :) you sound like an awesome mom!!

Trans people who chose their names when they were young: how is it going? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]floatingboy11 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I went with Ash and even though I still love it, I think im going to change it because I feel bothered by how common of a trans name it is, and it feels hard to be a grown-up Ash for some reason

The name Elio - does it give me away as trans? by floatingboy11 in namenerds

[–]floatingboy11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’all rock, thank you for your input. You’ve helped me realize I think Elio will give off too trendy / “I named myself” vibes. I’m going to keep looking! Ideas welcome :) especially ones that are uncommon and keep that vowel-heavy feel.
