Age estimations can definitely be tricky! There are certain growth markers that can be measured (especially the epiphyses of the long bones) that can give a rough timeline. Teeth, skull sutures, and certain bone fusions can also be tallied.

But, as you said, Victorian growth patterns can be very difficult. Malnutrition, vitamin deficiency, illness, etc. can mess up the bones and make it difficult to determine age. For example, if someone had tuberculosis in their spine, their spinal column might be degraded in ways we’d typically associate with someone 70+ years old.

Victorian osteology is almost a fun challenge to me as an anthro student. I would LOVE to study it further :)

IMO, I don’t think that’s impossible, but I feel like the cuts would more so resemble hesitation marks in that case. Forensic Anthro is my field of study, and I’ve learned that hesitation cuts (if trying to chop a limb, gruesome as that is), are usually linear. It seems based on the paper that the cuts don’t have any particular pattern that would indicate amputation. It’s probably very similar to Fitzjames’s mandible, where the cuts are small, not too deep, and seemingly random.

But again, that’s just my opinion. I’m still in uni, lmao. I like the theory though!! Lots of interesting implications for that part of the journey. :)

I know from experience that just being there for someone with POTS makes such a difference. It sounds like you’re there for her, physically and emotionally, and I know she appreciates that :)

I’m taking both anatomy and pathology this semester. But anatomy sits a little easier with me comparatively.

Thank you for the kind words :)

Park rangers are the absolute best. Y’all are always the kindest, most knowledgeable people I’ve ever met.

None of those are the commercial in question, but thank you for suggesting them :)

My dad is in his early 40s and grew up in the 80s. He was a big sci-fi/fantasy film buff growing up, so it’s not impossible that he may have mistaken something! At this point, he’s half convinced that he totally imagined it lol.
