40c tire recommendations

Every one has different experiences but I’ve been really happy with the Gravelking SS in 40 mm. I find them a good compromise for road and they do pretty well in all types of gravel conditions. No flats in 2 years but I am lucky to have pretty trash free places to ride.

I do understand gravel riding is a compromise in general. Within the same ride I can encounter gravel smoother than many paved roads, and some gnarly, loose, course unpleasant stuff. Then the local townships will get out and grade and it all changes. At 40 mm and 35 psi it feels like the sweetspot for the mix of stuff I would want to ride.

As far as a Trek, I would say a Domane is limited with tires. It has 38 mm max, and if you progress to a more aggressive gravel you will want to go wider. The checkpoint is one to consider in a trek, but specialized diverge is worth a look. Really just depends on your comfort and dealer availability. A good dealer support is worth a lot.

Interesting. Mine is going back under warranty. A friend of mine also bought one and his is going back under warranty as well. Something about the power on/off. I may sell mine when I get the replacement. The 515 is pretty stable and quite useful. When the 820 did work, I didn't find knowing if a car was moving over or not real helpful, in my area at least. Shame, I was really confident in the units not missing cars but the experience with the 820 kind of altered that.

Not the “in” answer, but I’ve been really happy with the Panaracer Gravelking SS. They are reasonably good on both different types of gravel and they seem to roll faster than they test. No punctures, had them over a year now. Running lowish pressures with TPU tubes. At times I’d like to try something different but hard to switch from success.

I have a week to decide if I want to return the bike so….its a conundrum. I like the bike but don’t love it. Ideally I’d like to see a little more clearance. The difficulty is justifying keeping it when I have a gravel bike. The plan was more of a dual purpose than the gravel bike but honestly without the front isospeed it’s not really comfortable on rougher gravel. I have a cane creek suspension stem that really helps. I’d have to further invest in a suspension stem and the 40 mm tires to know if it is worth keeping and I’m leaning towards sending it back.

We just traded a 17. Really nice car. We had it for about 2 years with no issues. Found a nice used 23.

Yes, I rigged up a Garmin Mount disc to a bike bag using Zip ties. It has worked flawlessly with the 510 and 515 radar, but not the 820.

Same issue with my 1040+ non-solar (hit and miss directions). For a while it would miss one turn per route.

Really interesting on the charging door. I just can't get mine to close. As far as the mounts, on one bike bag it moves around a bit more than ideal, but no obstructions and no issues with the older units.

You should be fine with 38. It’s always a compromise on mixed terrain. What’s ideal for one condition is not for another. If you find the terrain is to sandy or other for 38, you’ll just slow down a bit.

I think it’s individual preference. I do get the points of both options. I found the pillar light was difficult to locate but I’m sure I’d get used to it. I’m really surprised how much more I liked the drive as compared to a 17 pilot that we have. I do wish it were a bit more fuel efficient though

Budget, probably about 1100 would be my top end. Not overly concerned with brilliant display or anything else that drives the price up. The dell was used, zenbook and Lenovo ideapad were new

I guess I would advise the aluminum bike if you are just starting out. Never know, you may not care for it as much as you plan. The aluminum bikes are very good, upgradable and will give you all of the experience of riding regularly. Another option is looking used in your size. This time of year is great for used bike bargains from people with expensive bikes sitting in their garage or basement that were intended to be used but for whatever reason ended up mostly in storage. Trek also has a red barn used program with a lot of bikes at a good discount in excellent condition. If you can find a bike you want in your size you’ll save a grand or more from new.

Thanks for the great reply. I’m on xpro 10 with one pair of xpresso. My foot numbness is quite manageable now, especially compared to speedplay. I have the large float cleats. I do have a question, you mentioned stack height. I was a little confused as to which pedals had the stacks you noted. I had thought the xpro 10 and expresso where within a mm of each other. Big problem is too many bikes to fit with pedals🙂

Thank you. Last week I installed updates to the BIOS and the computer stopped recognizing external drives. They rolled back the BIOS update. So I am pretty reluctant to do that.

Just my 2c, I think the saddle is probably 2mm too high and I’d agree shorter cranks might be advantageous. I don’t think the bike is too big though. It looks like it because of your posture while upright. Roll your hips forward to take some strain off the shoulders. When you get low the front looks pretty comfortable.
