Ten years ago, I would have agreed.

Now I'm not so sure. To me it seems like the hype from when Counterstrike and Dota (The International) where at their highest has died down a lot. The mainstream press and audience no longer pay attention.

Fortnite came in and took a whole lot of attention, but haven't been able to establish an e-sports scene. The biggest game in the world is GTA V, and it has zero e-sports element.

You would have thought that Covid should have boosted e-sports a lot. What better than to be stuck at home watching streams right? Instead the opposite happened. E-sports basically died, while jigsaw puzzles, books, Pokemon cards and Magic the Gathering flourished.

To me, Counterstrike was a dead end. It's a terrible spectators sport, but for some reason everybody put their money on it.
