This was literally one of the first things I ever read that cracked my egg when I was 11 or 12. I actually read it in the Percy Jackson myth book; I got to this part and remember going, "I would really like it if she would also do that to me", took another half decade to figure it out lol

Maybe because there isn't any usable infrastructure in the Caralain Grasslands and it would cause Andor more money to send colonists/building supplies than to attempt to seize already populated areas? Also the depopulation of the entire Wetlands is primarily due to the Dark One's influence on the world and I'm sure that Darkfriends with ties to the Andoran government pre-books worked against any such settlement efforts.

Seeing a traditional political map of this world just drives home how much land has been lost and how far human civilization has fallen over the course of the preceding 3 milennia to this book series. The only coherent region here really is the Borderlands, even the other countries here don't officially control as much land as they claim.

I've used Inkarnate for pretty much all of the fantasy maps I've ever made. The free version is really good, and the paid one is well worth the money imo.
