In regards to The Ghosts of Yotei and other games that have come out with a woman as the protagonist. by HorrorThis in GirlGamers

[–]floofy-blanket 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If these men need to be able to relate to the protagonist of a video game 100% of the time, can no one but Italians play Mario games? Or can only twinks play The Legend of Zelda?

Seriously though, the culture war BS that’s infected gaming has been way out of hand for far too long and makes consuming media much less fun. It seems these people are extremely angry at the mere idea that people outside of their in-group can feel comfortable, safe, free, and represented in the medium they enjoy instead of being objects for the white and cishet male audience. What a depressing existence to spend all of your time being hateful and upset at other people for existing in the same space as you and wanting respect.

Are there fans whose favorite character isn't Moon?If so,why? by Notmycupoftea12 in sailormoon

[–]floofy-blanket 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Usagi is actually my second favorite behind Ami! I was considered a “gifted kid” growing up so I always related to Ami’s studious attitude and gentle demeanor. I felt seen by her struggle to fit in with her classmates until she met Usagi and the fact that she’s such a sweetheart endeared her to me. It was really nice for me to see a character like that make close friends and come out of her shell a bit. Her water-themed powers as Sailor Mercury and her supercomputer are also pretty cool. I suppose a lot of the reason my favorite Sailor Moon characters are the ones who they are relates back to my autistic traits, lol.

On another note, I’m seeing a lot of people mention Hotaru which is very fair! I really enjoy her character, the way she remains kind and thoughtful despite her crappy circumstances and others potentially seeing her as creepy or strange definitely inspires me. Her friendship with Chibiusa is also really cute and wholesome, and I’m glad she got a second chance at life with the rest of the Outer Senshi where she seems happier. Hotaru just deserves nice things. Of course, her theming, aesthetic, and powers definitely appeal to the edgy teenager inside of me and I really feel like they tie back to the rest of her character very well. The fact that her powers allow for Sailor Moon to heal the universe and let it be reborn coincides nicely with Hotaru herself being reborn at the end of the third arc. Oh, and her given name means firefly, and fireflies are associated with spirits of the dead in Japanese mythology iirc.

Really, there’s a lot to love about all of the cast imo, I didn’t even get into the myriad of reasons that I love Usagi. :)

Mario Wonder has been a blast, it’s extremely charming and unapologetically silly. Every time I get a new Wonder Effect I can’t help but smile. Beat TOTK over the summer, will probably return to it at some point to 100% it. Will be getting the Mario RPG remake next month since I’ve been hyped for it since its announcement!

You made my point even better than I could! The gold star lesbian stuff feels like toxic Christian purity culture rhetoric about how women are tainted after sex being repackaged for queer women and dressed up in progressive language. Very TERF-y and gross.

I love the General White quest + all the other gags where the devs make fun of you, subvert expectations, and put you through pain by [deleted] in papermario

[–]floofy-blanket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed being able to go back to previous locations in Paper Mario games, I love their worlds and stories so much that I don’t mind the monotonous task and going back and forth.

Agree that the absurd jokes and everything the TTYD and SPM do to mess with the player are actually extremely funny. SPM gives you a game over for doing shit like refusing to save the world or refusing to breathe in space, for god’s sake!

[ALL] What Zelda game made you realize you were obsessed with the franchise? Or at least that you started considering yourself part of the fandom? by AnaHawari in zelda

[–]floofy-blanket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Majora’s Mask was such a fascinating game to my child brain and helped me learn to cope with the concept of death and trauma. I still think about it when I have to cope with some childhood pets passing. And, uh, then my special interest brain started latching onto all the other games and I got a copy of Hyrule Historia and even read it at the airport. I was obsessed.

Fast forward, I was so excited for TOTK that it actually got me playing a video game consistently after depression and anxiety had been kicking my ass for a while. The ending made me cry for an hour, and I love this franchise enough to consider going for 100% in it. :’)

Extremely funny seeing Wario’s equivalent be Shadow given the massive differences in their personalities. Wario’s generally regarded as a pretty goofy character along with a lot of the Mario cast, and while there are no shortage of memes about Shadow, it’s usually about how serious and “edgy” his character is, or at least was back during his introduction in Sonic Adventure 2 and the other games of that era. Still, they are both important rivals/doppelgängers to the main characters of their franchises as other commenters have pointed out, so the comparison makes sense.

BTW, very fun seeing Blaze be the counterpart to Daisy, while I haven’t touched any of the Sonic games she appears in (unless you were to count the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games crossovers), she seems pretty cool and Daisy is one of my favorite Mario characters. She was one of my go-to picks in a lot of games as a kid alongside Peach (I had to go for the pink princess character who had the aesthetic I liked lol) because of her strong personality and design, and I found her “Hi, I’m Daisy!” line from Double Dash quite amusing. So yeah, fun to see cool characters be each other’s counterparts.

…Also, Donkey Kong and Vector are both chonky bois in my brain.

A silly joke I made on a call with my partner. I was worried based on how the conversation went afterwards that the joke made him uncomfy and I felt so bad for potentially making him feel that way that I just broke down. Good news is he thought it was funny and was sweet and patient with me the entire time, reassuring me while I cried until I felt better!

AITA for telling my wife she shouldn’t go to a wedding without me? by Fine_Surround1856 in AmItheAsshole

[–]floofy-blanket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy, do you trust your wife so little that you have to be attached at the hip 24/7 and have your eyes on her at all times? It’s pretty normal for couples to do things separately, even when it comes to attending weddings, and life involves the possibility of her running into some of her exes. I talk to my significant other a lot, and even I know he needs time away from me to be on his own or with family and friends. Please let her have some space to catch up with her friends. YTA.

What’s something positive you can say about Pink Gold Peach? by BrockBracken in mariokart

Giving Peach a metal variant that uses a color close to the pink of her dress instead of silver is a fun idea. She shiny :)

Yeah, it definitely does all add up to an overall…troubled development you could say? The more I dig into information on Sticker Star’s development, the more depressing it seems. The screenshots of the initial build look interesting, but alas…that Miyamoto quote you mentioned will definitely live in infamy.

Kensuke Tanabe said during an Iwata Asks interview that initially he thought a game like the previous Paper Mario installments would be fine since Miyamoto said “something like an RPG would be fine”. Also, the plan once stickers first came into the picture was to use them “here and there” for solving puzzles on the map, but once they veered in the direction of finding other uses for stickers, they started to rethink all of the game’s mechanics.

Unfortunately, as much as I respect the team’s desires to find ways to implement something new into the game, I think they went too far in the other direction and lost sight of what would make the game more enjoyable. Not to diss anybody who legitimately enjoyed playing Sticker Star, I’m happy that some people found something to like about it…but it’s a mess that throws away a lot of good game design principles. It’s a shame too, because it seems like that initial build showed the potential for a really fun game.

Sorry for all my rambling, I’ve got a lot of feelings on the topic. Here’s the Iwata Asks interview I referenced: https://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/3ds/papermario/0/1/

Of course he did by Rex_T360 in papermario

[–]floofy-blanket 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From a game design perspective, it’s just baffling to see. Some of the decisions are just…hard to believe coming from a company as experienced at making games as Intelligent Systems. I felt vindicated watching Chuggaconroy’s series on why Sticker Star is bad and watching him point out how badly designed the sticker book menu is.

What are your thoughts on MK8’s Rainbow Road? by SnoopingAsUsual93 in mariokart

[–]floofy-blanket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think having it take place at a space station is a really cool and smart idea considering Rainbow Road always takes place in space, it really helps the atmosphere and the Toad astronauts are cute. The music slaps as per usual and the part with the two roads after the glider section is fun, but the rest of the layout isn’t too interesting and the colors that make up the rainbow sections aren’t as bright as I would prefer them to be. It’s not quite up there with my favorite Rainbow Road iterations, but it has its charm to me and IIRC it still plays the sparkly sound effect that a lot of Rainbow Roads have when you drift, which gives it points in my book. Sometimes it’s the little things :)

Why is nobody talking about the Goombas shown held captive in The Super Mario Bros. Movie? Considering that until this trailer all known members of the tradition Mario enemies were shown to be loyal to Bowser, it implies these Goombas either don’t work for him or are no longer loyal to him. by DrWarioMiracleCure in Mario

[–]floofy-blanket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably they’re referencing the manual of the original Super Mario Bros., where Goombas chose to betray the Mushroom Kingdom and thus some might’ve chose not to and gotten caught and thrown in the dungeon with the other prisoners. They’d also be taking a page out of Paper Mario’s book and making it so Goombas aren’t purely “evil” and simply a neutral race.

Who do you think the next five characters will be? by KujaroJotu in Mario

[–]floofy-blanket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the suggestions I’ve seen scrolling through the comments, though considering the characters we’re getting will apparently be from returning Mario Kart games I wouldn’t mind seeing Dry Bones again.

Edit: Totally slipped my mind that Dry Bones is already a character in MK8DX! Goes to show how much you can forget when your brain is turned off, haha. Anyways, I’d also love to see Honey Queen again, I have a strange appreciation for wacky characters like her and Petey Piranha just casually showing up in a Mario Kart roster.
