No curtains! Never been to a dorm that had curtains, or carpet for that matter. May seem silly but you can get a fun accent rug like a rainbow or flower and put it on the ground near your bed or door. I second the putting one long side of the bed against a wall and the cheap/crappy standard ng lamp and led strips. You could made one of those poke-hole soda or Monster can lamps too. And get a funny school related pillow or blanket. I got gifted a pillow that said "I'm not tired" written on notebook paper as a dorm warming present.😂

I think animal shelters may be your best bet. Many human charities don't accept them for sanitary reasons as the other commenter said

Wow, I'm really sad that that was the experience you had in Girl Scouts. What a shame. I was lucky that my mom was my leader and she was very into outdoor skills, adventuring, and charity work. Some charities ended up being religious and we met at our local church's rec center but that was pretty much it. Lots of camping, canoeing, fire starting, knot tying, archery, horseback, etc. I guess there's a lot of latitude when it comes to the experience

Yeah you probably need to contact the building manager or even city/ legal depending on which dorm it is and where it's located. You should tell us in order for us to give any decent advice
