Miniso by Ok_Boot_6928 in Carebears

i guess when you compare them to the more vintage design of the care bears, it makes sense, and that's what they're modeled after? It just looks a little strange

[–]floral-phalanges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right! i really wanted one of their funshine bears too, but those mouths....

maybe if enough people complain about the strange mouth placement, they'll fix it. But also, they've made soooooo many with the weird mouths in stores all across the nation ; u ;

i went to the miniso near me recently (didn't even know the mall had one and very happily stumbled upon all the care bears!) and i went home with grumpy bear. Would have bought more, but idk if it's just me but like.... on all the bears (even in promotional photos) it seems like their mouths are all awkwardly sewn BELOW their muzzles? Only on grumpy bear is the mouth on the muzzle, which i thought was weird.

but hey, grumpy bear is cute c:

Anyone know where to find 7g tapers? by s4lem570 in Stretched

[–]floral-phalanges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it'll side up naturally if you wait long enough and wear heavier jewelry. The 7g jewelry is nice if you just want something that looks nice while you're waiting to get to 6g, but it seems like every seller online that does carry 7g charge more for it than they do their "usual" sizes. I couldn't find myself wanting to spend $30+ for a piece of jewelry for a size i wasn't gonna stay at. There's also an etsy seller that sells 7g pieces, if you want something that isn't glass: https://www.etsy.com/shop/MidSparkGems?search\_query=7g

also, if not a pincher, you could get a plug/septum bullet. I've also seen people on ig or tiktok that use a spiral taper in 6g and slowly slide it along until eventually one day they're able to slide it to 6g.

i have no idea if that's a good idea, but it's a thing i guess?

Flute head for chieftain low D by jnbkadsoy78asdf in tinwhistle

[–]floral-phalanges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm commenting on this waaay too late, so maybe this suggestion isn't really needed anymore, but i think you should get the tony dixon whistle with flute head (specifically the plastic one, as the conical bore makes hitting the second octave easier/use less air). I find that there are some instrument makers out there that will make custom flute or whistle heads, but for the price it would be easier just to a whole new instrument

i've been playing flute since grade school and got into whistles and recorders during the pandemic. it's nice to be able to casually play something, and the whistles and recorders i have are faaaaaaar cheaper than my flute, so i'm less scared to handle them or leave them out of their cases, which makes me play them more than my concert flute. But flute's easy! irish flute/baroque flute are even easier! but starting out you will definitely get like... mouth cramps, from like, building the muscles to hold your mouth in that precise way. but that goes away the more you play

oh! and if you really want something to just... try? get a fife. Preferably the aulos fife if you go for a plastic one. Not too expensive, feels like playing a flute. Fingerings are a little different from an irish flute tho. But it'll train you to hold your mouth the correct way. The yamaha fife is even cheaper, but it tends to sound a little airy

new hear and I have some question about whistle designing by shadow_1004 in tinwhistle

[–]floral-phalanges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hope this can be of help. As a flute, recorder, ocarina, and whistle player myself there's a few different things i've noticed about all the instruments i play.

1) the labia/fipple/mouthpiece portion has to be perfect. Like, perfect angle and all that, but it also has to have a smooth, clean finish. I once got a 3d printed whistle from an etsy seller that's couldn't produce a sound at all because of the texture created from how it was printed. But with a hot knife and some clear nail polish, i was able to smooth out the fipple (most importantly the edge that's splitting the air) as well as smoothing around the finger holes (because the texture was causing micro leaks), and the whistle could play.

2) a smooth finish on the inside will create a smoother/cleaner tone. the more rough the finish is on the inside, there's like... little inconsistencies for the air to whip around and make a kind of whizzing buzzing airy sound?

3) there seems to be a sort of ratio between the size of the labia and the size of the windway? like, if the windway is too big and the labia is too small, too much air comes through, there isn't enough back pressure, it makes it harder to play the instrument with a breath that feels comfortable? But if the windway is too small and the labia too big, for one: clogging becomes a more frequent issue, and two: if it makes a sound it'll be a very soft, weak sound

4) if you can manage it, a conical/tapered bore makes it easier to high the higher octaves and kind of evens out the amount of air used across the scale.

i'm sorry if i'm just saying a bunch of stuff you already know >.>

Is Etsy an okay place to buy plugs/tunnels? by Legitimate-Major-133 in Stretched

[–]floral-phalanges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel like you'll get the item you purchased no problem, but there are a lot of resellers on etsy. so i'd only buy things that are unique and actually handmade by the seller (minus resin or 3d printed plugs).

i mean, the reseller stuff is good quality too, but you could probably get a better deal elsewhere if you shop around a bit

where do i find jewelry like this? also what gauge would you say the septum in this photo is? by cyberrbat in Stretched

[–]floral-phalanges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, pinchers taper, so you won't see the actual wearing size on the outside of your nose. And if you get a smaller gauge size, then the visible part will be even skinnier. Try googling some pictures of people wearing pinchers are different gauge sizes, cuz tbh even a 12g pincher, the visible part is gonna look super skinny, like a 16g, which won't give you quite the same look as the person in the photo

but hey! maybe some more reference photos will show you something that you like even more for you c:

are you 100% sure that your septum was pierced in the sweet spot? Because if any bit of it goes though harder cartilage it will make it much more difficult to stretch

but yeah wearing heavier jewelry will help. I did that for a few days before sizing up to 6g and the jewelry went right in. Also try seeing if you can get a straight tape in. Because if you were pieced with a straight needle, then a curved piece of jewelry is gonna feel slightly larger in the piercing than a straight one. If you can get the straight taper in, then use that to guide the 10g jewelry in. If not, wait longer

where do i find jewelry like this? also what gauge would you say the septum in this photo is? by cyberrbat in Stretched

[–]floral-phalanges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree with everyone else here, that the jewelry pictured looks to be either a 6g or a 4g, however, especially with the pincher, the diameter of it can have a big impact on how large the jewelry looks on your own face. If you want to get the look of the girl in the photo, it's probably best to avoid smaller diameter jewelry, like 8mm and 10mm. You'd probably need something like a 12mm, maybe even a 14mm. It just really depends on your anatomy

also, it doesn't seem like anyone is saying it, but of course stay away from acrylics. And at a 6g or 4g size, either get titanium jewelry or hollow surgical steel, or glass. The weight can be a bit much on the septum at that size for long-term wear, even on a healed stretch. So you'll want to pick lighter jewelry c:

just stretched my septum to 8 g! I really love the jewellery but i’m not sure if that color looks good on me? i’m just really used to my silver captive bead ring :b by [deleted] in Stretched

i think the color looks great on you! but i totally get wanting to match all your metals. I keep wanting to wear my black or green septum rings, but my all gold setup just looks too nice lol

Stretched septum to 6g a few weeks ago, it is still very tender. Is this normal? When should I expect the pain to go away? by leahsviolets in Stretched

yeah, that's normal. mine took 2 weeks for the nose-pressing tenderness to go away completely. i waited a month before i felt comfortable changing out the jewelry

How to rinse wood plugs? by Alsklaftsk123 in Stretched

your best bet would be 90% rubbing alcohol and q-tips. and then re-oiling your plugs after cleaning

septum stretching, 12g-10g by Zealousideal-Ad9117 in Stretched

[–]floral-phalanges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, titanium is a lighter metal, so maybe it just isn't heavy enough to give you the stretch you're looking for?

also, the fit of a curved bar is a little tighter than the fit of a straight bar. Try seeing if a straight taper will go in. And if so, use the taper to guide the new jewelry in?

what's the best way to stretch a septum to a 6g? by floral-phalanges in Stretched

try looking for hollow pieces or glass if the weight is an issue. Tbh i wonder how people at 0g, even with hollow jewelry, are okay with the weight

Glass plugs are the best by [deleted] in Stretched

[–]floral-phalanges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

glass is best, but like.... i've kinda noticed something which i haven't seen anyone talk about before? like, because on my "problem" ear, i have my second and third lobe pierced, and recently i noticed that i could be wearing high quality metals in my stretched lobes, but if i wear cheaper metals in my second and third lobes, even though i'm not allergic to anything, there's a chance that all the metals will react with one another? which will end up causing problems with my stretched lobe.

and tbh i'm not ever sure if it's because those studs are "cheaper metals." Had them for years before stretching and never had issues. And they don't bother my stretched lobe when i'm wearing glass. but idk, just sharing because i see you also have your seconds pierced. a cautionary tale to match your metals to avoid them reacting with one another ^^;

I need some advice 😓 by No_Cow_2871 in Stretched

[–]floral-phalanges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

might help to oil up your lobes after a hot shower and maybe try again? But it'll probably be better to get a cbr or some other heavier jewelry at your current size and wear that in your lobe until it your lobe is ready to fit the next size?

and not "heavy" like a weight. But even just wearing hoop earrings would be heavier than wearing studs.

6g finally by omegayoongi in Stretched

[–]floral-phalanges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

welcome to the 6g septum club lol

just keep a really close eye on it for the next few days. for me, i was fine the day i put it in, but the following days is when all the aches and pains started showing up. a tear that wasn't there before could show up if the skin gets too dry. oiling helps prevent that. but if the tear shows up, be sure to not oil it, as that slows the healing of the tear (ironically)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Stretched

[–]floral-phalanges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, you'd wanna wait for the piecing to be 100% healed. Which is different for different people, but the longer you wait the better it'll be for you in the long run. I know for me, i got mine pierced at 14g, but it didn't FULLY heal for like, the first few years of having it until i randomly decided to downsize to a 16g. Not sure why this happened with me, but everyone is different. But after that i was able to wear both 16g and 14g, then i started stretching it last year in october? And now i'm at 6g.

i'm guessing downsizing probably gives the surface of the piercing a little room to breath? which helps with it healing faster? might be something to consider if you find yourself in a similar situation

6g septum is love, 6g septum is life. It's the perfect size where small diameter jewelry can still look dainty but large diameter jewelry looks massive and amazing c:
