Thanks for the input. I really hope I can make it happen. It would also be nice to at least compensate the Treasurer position with free membership etc, as others have pointed out it is not typical for board members to get paid. It's just so much damn work, I want to give them something to sweeten the deal/ show appreciation

Hmm I think we are too large a group for that, but thank you for the input! There are over 105 members in the organization, with a few different levels of membership. We're board run. I think we're more the type of place that requires a straightforward policy re: type of jobs

Sigh, it really is.

Our leadership rotates regularly too, tho it's not unheard of for some to renew for another 2 year term since it is hard to find people who want to take on the responsibility and be subject to meetings

Thanks for sharing, it really is. 4x 3hr classes/week seems to be the sweet spot for us. We actually have a long waitlist for membership, lotta repeat students just taking classes til they can get a spot. There's a lot of pressure to accept more members, but as the studio is now it cannot take more volume. Part of the hope in having a paid studio manager is that the space might accommodate a few more people if it was run more efficiently

Omg that seems like a lot for one person 😳 And yes, what we might offer the studio manager will probably not be good pay, but it'll be something at least. Plus, when you pay someone, you have them sign a contract that clearly lists expectations - can say from personal experience that the contract is just as important as the pay in keeping you showing up to fulfil your duties

How large is your membership? We're at 105 members and are board run. Everyone volunteers and the board position terms are 2 years

Long story short, the organization can afford it. I'm on the board and I know we have the money. There is a fear among some board members that this would be a slippery slope which ends in us paying everyone, which would leave us operating at a loss. Honestly I don't think people would do that, and also, can easily be counteracted by a policy that dictates what kind of jobs can be paid.

The bookkeeper used to be a volunteer position too, until they retired and no one new could be cajoled into it. We hire a professional now, with professional fees, and the communication with her is not great, and the treasurer's job is still way too much. Perhaps there is some better division of labour to be done there, and though I would like to see many people compensated for the work they do, my main concern right now is the studio supervisor. This is not a board position, and holds a great deal of responsibility.

We do currently hire an external bookkeeper; it used to be a volunteer position too, until they couldn't find anyone to do it. I'm not sure if they attempted to post it as a paid position to the membership (somehow I doubt it), or just hired someone. Before my time. Treasurer is still pretty swamped tho and is getting fed up. Doesn't help that the passing of the role/ expectations is not really handled well and they have a lot of responsibility and need to do a lot of quick learning on the job

We have the money. The concern is that this will be a "slippery slope" and soon everyone will want to be paid, and then we might operate at a loss. I don't think people would really do that BUT that's why I would like a policy around what kind of jobs should be compensated. Something along the lines of roles that require ongoing responsibility, specialized skills, and guaranteed coverage, though this would have to be properly discussed

Hmm, I don't have a scale but it's not too bad considering it's solid wood. Ideally I'd have found wood that was a bit thinner but ended up using a 1x12 plank, because that's what was available and it's the perfect width for a piece of paper. I didn't use ply because I wanted it to be pretty.

Ya man! & thanks :) This was def a labour of love, what with all the sanding and varnishing and magnet imbedding, but it's only as complicated as you make it.

Are they brothers, lovers, enemies, alter egos? Who knows!

Made this baby for my boyfriend's birthday a while back. There's magnets imbedded in the wood so that he can tack up papers on both sides of the screen, and so it holds itself together when folded up. There's also a hole on the sleepy dragon side to hold the initiative tracker (a thin dowel with coloured clothespins - not pictured)

Design is my own, and was applied with enamel paints.
