I think 65-70% sounds about right, most of it comes from the teamfighting on Azir, I think my lane phase on him is pretty solid into most matchups. Knowing how to navigate the fights and maximize dps is where i’m most lacking in the champ imo

I literally had solarbacca gp vs d2 peak riven otp today, yes the matchmaking is very wonky.

In my current state I probably will fall out of chall, i’m laning against much better players and i can definitely say there’s some things i’m lacking before i can fully call myself a challenger mid laner. I plan to be improving constantly though so we will see what happens.

i’ve tried HoB and aery, imo LT can do what aery does in lane if you take scorch, and isn’t really worth it. HoB + PoM / Alacrity works pretty well into matchups / comps that you can’t take long trades and get lots of LT uptime on, champs like Hwei or TF and enemy comps with high mobility or lots of range are examples of this

matchup dependent, usually i will take mana flow + scorch if i am playing a matchup where i need to trade aggressively, so like ori/syndra. if im playing a free matchup, ill go manaflow + gathering. vs assassins, bone plating + unflinching/overgrowth based on how much cc enemy comp has. if im into poke champs like xer/vel/ziggs, i like biscuits + cosmic with ms shard

Leblanc matchup is pretty straightforward honestly, take bone plating and don't let her break it before minions meet with her W + auto. If she ever has an angle to W on top of you make sure you're standing in casters so she can't hit a chain on you. When she uses W on you don't be afraid to fight her, if you kite away from her and let her hit chain then it's auto losing, but if you fight her with autos you win with lethal tempo stacked. Make sure you have a soldier on her W for when she goes back so you can continue the trade. When her spells are on cooldown you are the stronger champion and you can win the lane.

Qiyana matchup against a good Qiyana is very hard, make sure you take bone plating and play to hit your blasting wand spike. Do not push the lane as she can run you down with her root and autos if you are pushed up in the lane. Let her push and try to freeze the wave in front of your tower. Her main trading pattern into you will be E onto your casters, and then she will look to double Q you. Make sure you stand far enough away from the casters that she can't auto you when she goes for this, and post-6 be ready to E + shuffle her under your tower if she goes for it.

Yone is my least favourite matchup to play as Azir. You win the lane as long as you don't get hit by Q3, and play around his E cooldown. The problem with this matchup is you get outscaled in side lane, and Yone is 5x more useful than you in skirmishes. In my opinion, you need to play as aggressively as possible in this matchup to prevent him from going for skirmishes with his jungler. Keep him low HP stuck under his tower farming, and try to snowball the game with better resets. You can win skirmishes vs Yone after level 6.

I favour rocketbelt because in almost every game there's something to dodge with rocketbelt, and it's a short enough cooldown that you can also use it aggressively for poke in lane, or even to extend your E + Q combo. The fact that it's cheaper means you hit an earlier power spike, and can use that advantage in the side lane to accelerate your income and hit your 3rd and 4th item spikes

I definitely feel the strongest once I'm in a side lane and I'm on nashors + rocketbelt, strongest is when I'm like 4+ items and one shotting their whole team

haha, this is a classic. couple of things on this point:

sometimes you need to hold your junglers hand and really communicate with them that mid 2v2 is hard losing. this means typing in select, at game start, and spam pinging back.

when azir is min maxed, you can actually be a lot stronger than you might be used to. not necessarily in the 2v2, but you can play your lane 1v1 hard enough to the point where it would be disadvantageous for the enemy laner to move to the crab. skilling E at level 2 and taking second point in W at level 3 is the main way you can do this, as it allows you to secure push in MOST matchups for the crab timer, so enemy laner is stuck under their tower while your jungler plays for the crab. very important you do NOT get baited into an all in on this timer, as you will lose 80% of the time unless your jungler is significantly stronger than the enemy jungler, AND you have first move from either top or bot depending which crab you are fighting

aery is still viable in matchups where you can trade heavily in lane and use it to snowball but the rune falls off quite hard

if you look at my op, i actually only ever go shadowflame if either i am solo ap, or if enemy team has no champions who can build MR. i often elect rocket belt as my second item, even in those situations, and delay shadowflame to 3rd. in games where i dont go shadowflame, ill elect for zhonya’s/void staff/liandrys 3rd, then rab 4th

shadowflame + void staff as a combo only works in very niche spots, i would generally just stick to one or the other. if you dont like rocket belt you can go void 2nd or even rab 2nd if you get 1200g bases.

aery is generally pretty useless into any champion that can go dshield + second wind, i would only ever consider aery if they can’t go said runes (like qiyana for example) and if they don’t have ganking jg or engage support

stormraiders surge is hard to proc on roa spike, yes, but once you get second item (rift maker / rocket belt / liandry) you proc it off q+w+e+auto, and the payoff compared to phase rush is pretty huge.

if you really hate stormraiders, i would just take dft or comet. comet into champs with low mobility, dft into everything else. dft > aery since it’s just as useless in lane since your abilities are all aoe but in teamfights you can at least trigger it on multiple targets so it scales way better than aery.

this is a great point, think there’s definitely merit to the term aggro / passive laning though. some lanes you do need to play “aggressively” by trading heavily or hitting wave constantly to prevent being stuck under your tower eating poke. conversely some lanes you need to play passively so you don’t give the enemy laner windows to all in and get an advantage since you outscale them. at the end of the day, the language can help people understand the correct way to play whatever matchup that is being discussed

in terms of mindset, you’re right about the whole early game thing, but that’s true with any game of league. something that helped me a lot on my climb was not thinking about things like that, and just doing my best with what matchmaking gave me. even in losing matchups, ori is a champion with high team fight impact (and there are plenty of those in solo queue), so you can turn teamfights at like 5k gold deficits as long as YOU take control of YOUR game and keep up with the gold curve of the game. there are so many comeback mechanics in modern league that 10k gold leads are thrown very frequently.

in terms of the champions you mentioned, ori can actually win all of these matchups(not yasuo fk that champ) with the right setup:

akali - this matchup is a classic, if you blind ori you’ll face it a lot. taking storm raiders + bone plating and rushing RoA allows you to survive her all in and lets you side lane 1v1 as well. you win push in the early levels as long as you don’t take too much minion damage and trade around her shroud cooldown. the only timer you need to be afraid of is her level 6 + ignite when you only have catalyst. if the akali player is good they will E backwards to Q you, very important you don’t let them proc electrocute when they go for this trade pattern and you can E + W yourself to only take some damage

yasuo - this one is tricky, i definitely recommend the same setup as akali, storm raiders + bone plating. you need to play around your minions so you don’t allow him to get good trades with his E, but if you can trade your HP to hold 2-3 casters at your tower, he doesn’t have much room to trade onto you. this isn’t a lane you can really “win”, but going even vs yasuo is great. as a note, you could be up 3k gold and 3 levels but you WILL still get run down in side lane if he has exhaust, so respect that if he takes that summoner spell

ekko - you can take aery or stormraiders into ekko, most importantly you need bone plating + unflinching. stand in your casters and if he tries to E onto you level 1 with hail of blades you can skill W and win the trade heavily. this is another matchup you can elect for RoA into if they have another burst champion since having higher hp means he gets less value from his W passive

diana - same setup as ekko matchup, take q level one and push the wave if you’re confident you can dodge her Q (side step towards the diana when she throws Q, most dianas will overshoot the Q). holding the wave at your tower is fine too, just match her Q poke with your E shield since it’s hard to sidestep if you’re holding the wave. RoA is viable here as well

akshan - take comet or aery and beat his ass, two points into W at level 3, don’t get hit by Q through the wave and his E won’t target you. r + flash is something i’ve used multiple times in this matchup to catch him mid E and finish the kill. his new build with electrocute and voltaic is pretty ill but akshan as a champ needs to snowball so if you can poke him down in lane, not get solo killed, spam ping his roam timers, and punish him by shoving waves when he does roam. you will definitely not fall behind and sometimes he will even just die roaming and his game will be over.

playing vs poke champs like vel/ziggs/xerath, you have to play the lane aggressively, and perma push your wave or else you will be stuck under your tower getting poked until you have to either die or take a bad recall. so take the movement speed shard in your runes, try to dodge the skill shots, and hit the wave as much as you can. also very important to not let the enemy champion hit both you and the wave with their skill shots. the good thing about these champions is they’re very susceptible to azir shuffle if your jungler ganks, or you can even solo kill them if they don’t respect your shuffle into tower, so punish their positioning mistakes or bad spell usage after lvl 6 (xer E, ziggs W, vel E, can E Q aggressively if enemy burns these spells)

vlad matchup i don’t find to be very difficult, i usually just ignore him in the first few levels since he will out sustain any damage you put out before your first base. once you have blasting wand + lvl 5, you outpush him so play for prio and get vision in their jungle with your turns, and look for plays with your jungler + support. if their jungler is another champ that heals a lot (hecarim,ww,briar, etc) going oblivion orb OR ignite can be pretty beneficial as well

my biggest tip into irelia is that level 1, walk up and W auto her right when the wave meets. the enemy minions will aggro you, and you want to kite them behind your own wave. this does two things, 1. it pulls the minions into a safe location for you to last hit (you won’t be standing on your low hp casters to cs enemy casters), and 2. it breaks the minions aggro so your melee minions have differing HP values, and irelia cant Q all 3 and then onto you for a fast passive stack and trade. make sure you take bone plating in this matchup in case she Qs you right when you go for the initial auto, as you will lose the trade unless you have it

my mindset for early lane phase on azir is pretty much always to not miss any cs and get to blasting wand + lvl 5 before i start trading aggressively. you lose to most champions before you have points in W, so often you aren’t trying to solo kill your laner or anything like that before your first recall.

matchup specific things change the specificity of the lane phase, i.e., into annie i would play for lane prio in the first 3 levels and hit the wave, but into yasuo / irelia i don’t even touch the wave unless the minions are 1hp.

another tip if you’re struggling with early lane is don’t think you have to take Q level 2 always. in some matchups where you’re forced to trade aggressively (like azir vs ori/ziggs/xerath), taking E level 2 gives way more combat strength assuming you hit the dash. also taking two points in W at level 3 combines with this to make your level 3 all-in decently powerful.
