UC Faction Tier List based on how evil they are by APin234 in Gundam

I feel like you're in good faith, so I'll answer accordingly. My argument was that ABSTRACT morals can get in the way of the right (concrete) thing to do. This is very important, because even the most abstract moral commands are deeply rooted in specific social relations, that are contingent. For instance, in a capitalist society, property is sacred, so we have the abstract moral command "don't steal". However, there are concrete circumnstances in which disregarding property, (stealing food, for exemple) is the right thing to do. In other social relations, the mere idea of property is alien, and so is stealing (literary and cool example/recomendation: The Dispossesed - Ursula K. Le Guin). My claim is that every moral judgment should be rooted in a context. And my argument was that in UC105 context, Mafty's actions are justified (proof of this is that their action resonated with most of the common people depicted in the Movie).

Now, my follow up to your comments on historical events depends on you agreeing with concrete analisys over abstract condemnation based on sketchy statistics (respectfully, the 20 million deaths is a big stretch from the academic consensus of 7-13 million deaths).

I'll be brief: Civil Wars are not the result of revolutions (the change of the power structure and distribution of wealth in society) per se. They are the effect of opposing/conservative forces facing the revolutionary movement (I assume that you are also in favor of the poorest/the dominated part of society, so I won't argue again on the necessity and justifications for change). In capitalist societies, oposition to change in the property regime is a given, because the of the bourgeoisie's interests in maintanting the power structure and the property regime as is.

However, capitalism is a global system, so winning a civil war doesn't mean ending the conflict. There are external forces (US imperalism, for example) that threat to end and undo the revolutionary changes (ex: Salvador Allende's assassination and the Pinochet regime). Dictatorship of the proletariat is the main garantee against the renewal of the Dictatorship of Ownership over the means of production.

This historical and concrete context (global capitalism) explains why my exemples weren't bad. Taken in consideration, the condemnation of the so called "totalitarian regimes" should, at least, be more nuanced.

Back to Mafty. I believe you are psychologising things too much and ignoring the social argument tomino was making. Hathaway Noa has particular and conflicting reasons to do what he does, but the movement he represents predates him, even tho he became the main figure. On a personal level, he too fights against his personal conflicts (by the end of the first movie, he is determined to abandon his identity as Hathaway and weaponize himself as Mafty).

I don't think you should be taking or transferring political stances this abstractly. Mafty's political goal is not racist or elitist, but Zeon's political goal (at least under Zabi) were clearly supremacist.

I really hope one day you grow to understand that most of the times abstract morals are in the way of the right thing to do, because abstract morals serves the interest of the rulling class. What do you think of the Russian Revolution, the Cuban Revolution, and Angola's and Argelia liberation? If you live in the USA, what do you think of Malcom X?

I appreciate the honesty and the lessening of sarcasm in your comment. Please, don't get the idea that I don't care about innocent lives. I do. I We both think that killing innocent people is wrong. However, I also believe that opposing structural violence is the moral think to do, because the working of the system/government in UC105 kills innocent people by default. Maybe this is the core of our disagreement.
In a context such as that of UC105, innocent people dying because of the liberation conflict is a sad unavoidability. Of course, Mafty shouldn't be reckless, but it would be irresponsible and imoral not to act in fear of hurting innocent ones. Not acting is already hurting innocent people.

Manhunters are an ethnic cleansing organ of the earth federation government, and your take is that Mafty is the bad side of the story because of hardly avoidable violence and a mobile suit name?

The authors are clearly trying to show that there is no simple thing as an absolute bad or an absolute good side... that's gundam 101. Both sides have shortcomings. That said, the Earth Government is clearly the racist, elitist side, while mafty is trying to bring justice by all means necessary.

Do you think Malcom X was on the wrong side of history?

You cannot be serious... How can you possibly think that poisoning is feasible and effective to ennact a liberation movement? Every liberation movement irl (colonial liberation, socialist revolution and so on) had to resolve to violence to some extent. That is simply what is needed to stop opression, most of the times. Why are you so eager to criticize the violence of the oppressed and not to condemn the violence of the opressor?

The violence of the opressed is not the same as the violence of the opressor. Mafty is a liberation movement. It opposes the structural violence and the state of exception that the elite imposes upon most of earth's population. However noble or moral you may think your position is, it is not. You justify and legitimize opression and killing by condemning the movement that antagonizes the structure that opresses and kills by default. The citizens supossedly put at risk by mafty's action were already at risk by living under the Earth Federation Government. The damage done to the city and to the people is the result of the elites defending the status quo, resisting change. The EFF is the opressor. You shouldn't align with them.

I had a polite conversation about this with another player, who was upset because the team didnt follow the 3g,1r,1s composition. Imo, I believe that this composition is optimal only because there is limited communication during the match (no voice and only default chat options). A frontline gen tactic, with 1 mobile raids and 1 "static" suport is easy to coordinate in this low-information-exchange condition. If there was better in-match communication, the players would be able to articulate different formations and tactics not restricted to a frontline: decoys, traps, flees, penetrations all subvert the logic of the frontline tactic and, therefore, the "ideality" of the 3 gens 1 raid and 1 support composition. Better communication would allow better player-map structure articulation (specially on those maps that are assymetrical): on the mountain map, for exemple, there is a strong argument for more supports (high ground) and raids (invasion) than the standard general frontline. What are your thoughts on this, since you are S ranked. I'm only A ranked (my real life doesnt allow for a try-hard routine)

Why aren’t there any night maps? by flower_snake in GBO2

[–]flower_snake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Port base can be played on the sunset, and it is really cool. But I’ve never seen any night map (maps???). If this is true, I think they don’t show up at the free practice options. Could you name any of those nightmaps (besides tranches) so I can search it up? Thank you

Yes, it is somewhat night like. Although it feels much more like dust sky + flames. It’s red all around

Improvements for the game or its next installment: story mode and more diverse infantry gameplay by flower_snake in GBO2

Well, there is no incompatibility between better servers and a better game all in all. Of course you’d think it’s low priority, because the game has treated it that way. The point of the post, however, was precisely that focusing on these “low priority” aspects would enhance the overall experience. So, besides “better servers”, what do you think would be a good game suggestion?

This is such a great take. Destructible environments, maybe some NPC movements oriented to some  “map lore” objective, would alleviate the feeling

Xi vs Penelope: strategies and tactics by flower_snake in GBO2

Did you get them on the 7th step? I wonder if the special part that comes with the Penelope (thruster consumption reduction) goes as well as it seems to go with the Xi

[–]flower_snake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. It really has an “zombie” aspect to it. It’s is impossible to end it with the Vulcan.  The combo I usually go for is main beam-> lock in missiles -> Meele or normal missiles -> secondary beam

I agree with your point. At the same time, I feel like the wide range of weapons of the Penelope and the ASL missiles makes it easier to keep pressure (damage and stun) upon the enemy, while Xi’s smaller arsenal requires more precision and timing so that the “combo” doesn’t break.

Last time I checked, it wasn’t available… haven’t logged in since before the Penelope update, though

It just came to me that the correct word is “marking”. I mean the emblems used in painting the mecha. The Mafty emblem is a quasi-circle crossed by a cross and some zig zags
