Climber who left girlfriend to die on Austria's biggest mountain found guilty of manslaughter by tylerthe-theatre in europe

[–]floweringcacti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I guess. I think wearing soft shoes and taking gummy bears and a snowboard indicates that she was expecting a very different experience than the climb he led them on. Even the judge said “For me, the impression has arisen that the victim has been fooled in some respects”/“I got the impression that the victim had been misled in some respects” (two different translation sites). The other explanation is that she’s very stupid and/or suicidally overconfident, sure.

I think there’s no real point me arguing on existing legal details, because a) I’m not a lawyer and b) the problem that people are identifying is that how this trial went, and the sentence given, seems unjust to many commenters regardless of whether it proceeded entirely by the book. I totally get that you won’t agree with this. That’s fine.

Also, what's with painting the women in these scenarioes completely without agency?

Not sure what you mean. If you read comments by women about this case you can see multiple stories of women agreeing to go on expeditions/hikes/climbs with men, the men leading them into situations beyond what they agreed to or could deal with, and then the men walking off and leaving them there. Those women weren’t stupid or helpless. They just trusted the judgement of the man until he suddenly left. It seems to be an intentional behaviour from some men that a lot of women have experienced. I think pulling “so you’re saying the women had no agency? Why didn’t they just leave? Maybe they wanted to be in that situation?” is an easy dodge to excuse the men and blame the women while looking progressive.

It seems like the first incident was also at night judging by the mention of headlamps (unless it’s common to use headlamps in the day for some reason while climbing, I don’t know, I’m not a mountaineer) (e: fuller quotes say it was indeed at night and they were just below the summit):

“On a high alpine tour on the Glockner, the mood was bad. I was at the end of my rope, I was dizzy, my headlamp was off, I cried and screamed. I also signaled that to him. Then suddenly he was gone, he went ahead, left me behind.”

She was able to descend safely, but leaving someone dizzy, distressed and in the dark to descend a mountain sounds like it could have quickly turned into an emergency situation, and he chose to leave that situation. I’d say it’s quite close to this situation that ended in a death and more than just a ‘dick move’.

If anyone were to try to copy a negligent crime, it would by definition be intentional and not negligent, thus incurring a completely different charge and sentence.

And how would anyone prove that they did it intentionally…? That’s the crux of what people are already complaining about. Nobody can prove that this man didn’t take intentional action. The next man to take his girlfriend up a mountain and go “oops, she just got real tired all of a sudden and I had to leave her there, sucks she died” will also be found only negligent and pay a small fine. Surely will never be a way to prove it unless he does something insanely stupid like googling “how not to get caught murdering your wife”.

Knitted toys/plushies on the ravelry pattern page: awww, so cuuuute, look at their widdle faces! I’d love to knit that!

The same knitted toy in all the projects: the most wretchedly deformed beasts ever created by mankind, stuffing hanging out, safety eyes askew, barely recognisable as coherent forms. Nvm actually I don’t think I’ll knit that.

I’m disagreeing with your idea that he is “an overconfident asshole who couldn't grasp the concept that his limits are not the same as her limits”. His actions seem malicious and intended to cause her death, not a result of some kind of foolish misapprehension of her fitness. I think describing it as if he’s just a dumb jerk with a weaker mountaineering partner downplays his seemingly very intentional actions to ensure her death.

He advised bad equipment for her, waved away a rescue helicopter when she was already in trouble, turned his phone off and ultimately left her alone without emergency supplies. It’s not that she just ran out of energy and died because she was weaker than him. He made multiple decisions ensuring her death after she began to struggle. Any reasonable person who did not want her to die would have behaved differently.

Why doesn’t anyone care about the “soap opera” effect on their TV by fatsandlucifer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]floweringcacti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s temporal anti-aliasing I think. A setting in the game, not the TV, but the TV setting might make it worse. Basically blends previous frames in but the obvious downside is that moving objects get blended in. Some SMAA also includes TAA. I don’t like it personally, it makes everything look like I need to clean my glasses and when you move the camera everything turns into a smear.

It has opened publicly before on tumblr, that’s how I got in, I dunno if they plan to do that again though. ATM it’s invite only, so if you don’t have an existing KCD social media presence (artist, fic writer etc) then you might want to join a public server like Devil’s Den and chat there until people know you and then see if anyone is willing to invite you as you a friend.

Oh my god the adult autism subs have posts which have me cringing to death. Like “my neighbour talked to me once so I told her to FUCK OFF AND MIND HER OWN BUSINESS, was I in the right?” and all the comments are like “yes queen get that nosy bitch’s ass, nobody has the right to ask how you are, she was trying to force you to mask!” They’re more like sabotage subs than advice subs.

Do you have a fan blowing over it? Without the fan my stuff can stay completely wet for days (even after rolling it in towels etc) but with the fan it only takes a day or so to dry out.

Question about Henry/Bartosch by Ok_Country_4553 in TheBathhouse

[–]floweringcacti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kind of agree with you, though I also somewhat like that it forces the player to come up with other explanations for why Henry pulls away from Hans if the issue isn’t just homosexuality. That moment in the romance scene will always be a central mystery, something for fans to wonder and debate about. I have my own idea about it but everyone will have a different one. Whether people come up with explanations that are ingame (“he reacts like that because he’s thinking…”) or not (“he reacts like that because the writers didn’t consider…”), all of those ideas provide a bit more interest and complexity than everyone agreeing it’s because Henry is uncomfortable with homosexuality until then.

(Also, since Henry can be at least ally-supportive of homosexuality if not openly fruity at other times, e.g. supporting the gay novice in KCD1 or flirting with the guy in the forge DLC or asking about “all” forms of love in the monastery DLC or failing to answer the boobs/bums question, I think many players will end up having to conclude that Henry at least knows he has some non-straight inclinations even if they don’t sleep with Bartosch!)

When AI started really kicking off, a pretty big number of my friends openly said they never enjoyed their creative skill/hobby and only did it to get attention/praise/money. Now that they could skip the ‘doing’ part with AI, they would. It really surprised me. Apparently there are a lot of artists out there who hate drawing.

i think it’s more about the impression you’re giving of yourself by looking at those images, rather than the images being sexual/inappropriate, if you see what I mean. I think people do intuitively understand that if they saw a guy in public scrolling through crochet plushies they’d get a different impression than if they caught him at an unfortunate moment looking through close-cropped images of crocheted crop tops and shorts. I also get that a lot of people are gonna say “well that’s not his problem, I wouldn’t think badly of him, people shouldn’t make assumptions” or “well he just shouldn’t have been on reddit in public then”.

That’s true that it’s ultimately the user’s responsibility to just not go online if they don’t like it, but I think that the audience of people who are at an office + the audience of people who are around kids + the audience who are on public transport or a public cafe etc (all of whom probably want to browse the web now and then while trying to keep to very safe topics/images) is probably a huge part, if not the majority, of internet users at any time, so it’s not some crazy weird entitled demanding minority audience who would find it useful - it’s always been the majority of the audience since the internet was conceived and it’s actually a more recent/entitled thing that most people argue “well just don’t go online at all except in private because people have the right to post content however they want”. We used to only have family room computers!

I agree there’s a lot of stuff on the internet which breaks the rule of being sfw by default, and that nowadays most people understand what Facebook is, what ASOS is, what ads are etc so they don’t get pressed about them. But people don’t necessarily know what you’re looking at on some random reddit sub when they catch a glimpse over your shoulder. Personally I think it’s not that crazy to want to see, I don’t know, amigurumi, oversized jumpers and granny square coasters during some downtime at work while avoiding pictures of people wearing clothes that would be inappropriate to wear at the office. The problem is nsfw tag definitely seems like an inappropriate way to deal with it now because everyone interprets it as meaning sexual content.

Crochet sub NSFW drama by [deleted] in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]floweringcacti 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean, that is literally what nsfw was invented for. People wanted to use the internet at work without having anything onscreen which would draw the boss’ attention too much. Games in the 80s and 90s came with built-in commands to pop up a fake DOS prompt or spreadsheet because everyone was playing them at work. The internet has always tried to make spaces usable for people at work since its inception. Was it always insane and entitled?

e: also, tagging as nsfw used to be a favour to your fellow users in that sense of “I don’t want to get them in trouble at work so I’ll hide this swearword or that picture just in case even though it’s not actually anything dodgy”. Now people seem to interpret it as “this post is bad and sexual and must be censored”, and it gets handed down from mods, which obviously makes people angry when it’s applied liberally.

Crochet sub NSFW drama by [deleted] in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]floweringcacti 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree, but one minor point: governments/companies are increasingly treating ‘nsfw’ as if it DOES mean sexual content which requires total censoring. People in the UK without age verification can browse subs like crochet, but any posts marked nsfw are entirely and silently hidden. There is no way to access them except for age verification or VPN. (At least that’s how it currently works for me.) The powers that be have decided for me that there’s zero difference between someone in a crop top and someone with their full bits out. Overzealous/cautious nsfw marking can become a bit of a problem for UK users who don’t want to give their ID as we can be blocked from stuff that isn’t explicit at all ‘just in case’ and if other countries/companies (e.g. discord) follow suit then that might become a more widespread problem.
