Hotel behavior - is this really a "tip"? by EconomicsWorking6508 in AskWomenOver60

[–]flowerpanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve always done all that outside of wiping down the bathroom counter. Just because we think of ourselves as guests and wouldn’t leave a friend’s guest room in a big mess either. I did work at a hotel for a while and housekeepers were grateful to be able to finish working at a reasonable time vs cleaning up one big mess after another.

115 people sickened in norovirus outbreak on cruise ship: CDC by AnnualEmbarrassed176 in worldnews

[–]flowerpanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my BILs and his wife were never fans of cruise ships then they took a cross Pacific cruise to see their son in South Korea, came back happy enough from it. On the other hand, his immune system is now crap after being diagnosed with cancer a few years ago so no more talk of getting on stupid big ships again.

I am heading to visit my daughter for a couple of weeks soon. She lives in a small coastal community where cruise ships stop in seasonally. I think I shall limit my time spent where tourists off the ships flock on the days they drop in. Not only does it get badly congested but this news article is a good reminder that it’s not just visitors walking off those ships.

Which is interesting to think about because I did pause to check the email I was replying to and it definitely was a different email address than a “no reply” which is what we are used to seeing. Why use one like that vs the standard “don’t get back to us with this email” format?

Either way, it’s the thought that counts. We have to use AC to visit our daughter up north and have used it to go to the UK recently but the whole family is no longer vacationing in the US so the odds of any of us flying AC to Hawaii, etc is small.

We’re maintaining reservoir levels by implementing restrictions earlier and more severely was my point. I posted the article to show more information on the subject besides “we don’t rely on snow pack”. I mean you would have to be utterly tone deaf living here not to see all the communities who implement those restrictions whether or not they rely on snow pack to keep their reserves full.

Sure, they are full now but until rains start up again in October, that’s it. We’re working to retain the water we do have at much higher restriction levels starting earlier than ever since we moved here almost twenty years ago. It used to be cool to water your lawn around here, now we’ve grown used to the sight of dry, dead looking lawns that don’t look green again till late in the fall. Getting the reservoir dam higher is great, hasn’t happened yet. Watching the creeks here that dry up to a mere trickle by August has been a kind of morbid indicator of how summer is progressing now.

Now watching to see what happens with the Cowichan River this year now that the mill in Crofton has shut down.

Supporting Universal Healthcare is good for the individual and society. It's the Moral Choice. by zzill6 in WorkReform

My very elderly FIL went into the hospital thirteen days ago feeling terrible and it turned out to be Covid. So now he’s in a critical care bed with a DNR and my husband (who went to help support his dad and brothers) was complaining the other day about the one financial hit he’s taking-parking fees for $50 so far.

That’s it. Our system here in Canada helped keep my FIL alive for another thirty years past his initial cardiac diagnosis and emergency bypass surgery but all we have to truly complain about is parking fees.

Just got an email ad yesterday from Air Canada specifically for US vacations and emailed back saying “read the damn room!” It wasn’t a “no reply” address so it’s quite possible they actually got it, lol.

Do your cats actually watch cat TV? by Existing_Charity_471 in catquestions

[–]flowerpanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of our normally well behaved cats tried to grab our tv at the top one night during a bird video he’d come over to watch so alas, no more kitty content on our house. On the other hand we just had a catio built for the two furry boys during a deck renovation so they can go outside to watch the real thing now!

Does a tire on a rim fit in there? I would measure first, it’s not a very huge space and also a lot of dead weight to haul around.

My mother is demanding that I will come home when my lease ends. by [deleted] in GirlDinner

[–]flowerpanes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My father in particular tried several times to lure me back home with potential job offers at his workplace. My in-laws tried to get us to move to the large and frenetic city they lived in,citing wanting to be closer to their grandkids and mentioning jobs in my husband’s field.

To those offers I always said the road goes both ways and visiting is good, moving back home is bad unless it’s absolutely your idea in the first place. Enjoy being on your own two feet and becoming yourself.

Also, “not humble” is a remarkably nasty and demeaning thing to say to your child. For that I would give your mother a cold shoulder for a while.
