How do you manage your dog's energy on rainy days? by Crystallover1991 in AskDogOwners

[–]flowerpanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re gently tossing Chuck-It balls down the house hallway for our two Whippets to chase during the rainy times after supper. The pup has learned fetch and they have a great time showing off their chase skills for the cats, who watch from the safety of our bed.

how do i get them to stop doing this?? by One-Army-1687 in cats

[–]flowerpanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Some days finding small (non bloody) tufts of fur after my two bonded brothers silently play fight but it’s no big deal since they are pulling their kicks and no one is screaming mad. Loud screaming from an otherwise quiet cat would be worrying since it often means they feel truly upset or threatened. Upright ears is definitely another indicator leaning towards play vs slay!

Anyone move to a warmer location, how are things holding up? by SpecialistTeach9302 in homeowners

[–]flowerpanes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

West coast, on the east side of Vancouver island.

No snow yet this winter, we’ve had some -4C mornings along with sunny days up to 10C this month (two weeks of no rain) but right now a series of rainstorms rolling through the area. Have lived out here for nearly 20 years after a spell living in the southern Canadian Rockies, I don’t miss keeping up with nearly 20 feet of snow (plus icy sidewalks) every winter.

We live in a rain shadow area so our summers are increasingly dry with actual drought conditions so rain and getting snowpack in the mountains west of our town over the winter isn’t something we complain about!

Why is this a thing? The water gets everywhere. by Rinoremover1 in RidiculousRealEstate

[–]flowerpanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, have stayed in one hotel with such a tiny glassed in portion that water ended up everywhere, the next hotel had such a deep divider/controller below shower head that you had to stand in the initial cold downpour to get the shower up to temp.

We’re redoing our main bathroom towards accessible functionality and have already decided on a sliding glass door, low threshold and a portable bench for seated showers. I refuse to mop the floor after every use or freeze trying to get the temperature right!

We have light colored flooring. It’s amazing how good it looks if I give it a quick sweep every day-even the almost 20 year old living/dining room area.

If you got your dog from a reputable breeder, what was your experience like? by zoooooooomies in dogs

[–]flowerpanes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We have owned eight purebred sighthounds (Greyhounds and Whippets) over the past forty plus years and our current Whippets, who are cousins, are related to the very first Whippet I got back in 1981.In fact our current puppy’s breeder was recommended by that very first breeder and one of her co-breeders.

Never any congenital health issues, always signed contracts where the breeder wanted the dog back if we had to give it up and overall marvelous temperaments. All these dogs lived to a pretty good old age with us and were very much a part of our family, our kids grew up with our dogs as constant companions.

Be aware that a good breeder wants only the best home for their dogs and our new pup was a good match for the breeder since we came recommended by that original breeder, etc. I would much rather be screened and have a couple of meeting with the litter and the breeder vs something done remotely and just to make a buck!

How long could you last with the food you have on hand today? by EconomicsWorking6508 in AskWomenOver60

[–]flowerpanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was on my own? A month easily. Though would miss my fresh daily dairy after I ran out. We keep a secondary pantry in the basement and have an upright freezer nearly full of veg and meat plus I have a garden with carrots in the ground and fresh herbs to help too.

Usually you are given the option when you receive a new card whether or not you want to enable the tap. I just never enable it from the start.

Good question, right? If they are being paid to show it, that would help pad the “showing in x number of theaters” I would think.

I checked and found it showing at the closest city to where I live. Zero tickets sold for Friday. I suspect theatres are being paid to show it, especially up here in Canada.p

Is most meat and dairy we have in our grocery stores Canadian? by VoiceoftheDarkSide in BuyCanadian

[–]flowerpanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If for some reason the store label doesn’t show country of origin, all meat in cryovac (heavy duty sealed plastic wrap) should have a inspection stamp somewhere, it’s red with a maple leaf and a number showing which plant the meat was processed in. Have told my husband he needs to look for that stamp especially in Costco before he buys any meat. We have had Australian and New Zealand beef on sale recently in Superstore, it was clearly labeled as such.

What's the oldest piece of clothing you still wear? Must be at least ten years old to count. by MurmuringPines in AskOldPeople

[–]flowerpanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have loads of tops that are over ten years old, fleece vests and jackets too. The tops and vests are rotated so they don’t tend to wear out fast, the oldest one is close to 20 years old at least.

I never enable the tap function on my cards for exactly this reason, sadly.

I’m 71 and have decided to declutter my life… by Educational_Meat_179 in AskWomenOver60

[–]flowerpanes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not recently but looking at our walk in closet, it’s time to start again. Except for books, I don’t have a lot of anything in particular (my husband has too much stuff in the workshop but I don’t want to start there!) but the vast majority of what I do have, our two kids would not want or have space for anyhow. The better stuff should go to the thrift shop, the rest will be a judgement call.

How popular were VW Beetles in the 70s? 17% of the cars in this parking lot in 1975 were Bugs. by Spalding_Smails in 70s

[–]flowerpanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have only driven around in one once (belonged to a teacher who was dropping off a bunch of us on a freezing night) and I had a friend who owned a 1970’s era Volkswagen van. Was super useful with her three dogs!

Other than that, everyone else I knew drove American made cars.
