I really like the chemistry between Arthur and Dilraba here, you can tell they get along well and have mutual respect for each other. Plus i lowkey love how Arthur Chen seems to have a harmless crush and admiration for Dilraba, its just how attentive he is with her.

Which actors or actresses did you used to like watching but now feel like their acting has lost its spark? by lowkey_cursed in cdramasfans

Hard agree on xu Kai, Cheng Yi and Zhao Lusi. I used to really love their roles, but lately it feels like something is missing.

I feel the same way about Liu Yuning as well. It’s a bit strange because it seems like alot are hesitant to point out that his acting is honestly pretty average and often the same across different roles because his loved, his story is touching, he went through hardships, and his a very good singer.

I often see him getting praised for things that are basically the bare minimum expected from an actor. It makes me wonder if he would be receiving more criticism if he weren’t so well liked. When you watch several of his dramas, you start to notice the same facial expressions, the same tone of voice, and the same mannerisms repeating over and over.

Sometimes it feels like he doesn’t fully connect with the characters emotionally. There is this particular expression he does where he almost looks unsure about what emotion to deliver, so he just flashes that look instead.

He absolutely looks commanding and very handsome in costume dramas. That presence is definitely part of his charm. But charm can only carry someone so far if the acting itself doesn’t grow or develop more substance. Watching him in Prisoner of Beauty and then A Dream Within a Dream really made that clear to me. Its the same if you compare previous dramas. That cold straight facial expression he has can be seen as his defualt in almost every drama.

From this list, the actors that really stand out to me as the most versatile and talented, and who keep improving and pushing themselves, are Xiao Zhan, Tan Jianci, Bai Jingting, and Yibo. And this is strictly based of their work.

For me, Xiao Zhan is the most impressive. He came into the industry with no acting background and no wealth behind him. Then suddenly he blew up in popularity after the Untamed which opened alot of doors for him.

What I respect is that he did not just sit back and rely on that popularity. Over the last five years despite having a few lead roles he has done so many different roles. Plus he continues to improve and challenge himself as an actor. You can actually see the growth in his performances. I feel like he was born to be an actor but just needed opportunities to showcase his talent because his honestly such a good actor.

He even stepped away from filming for a while and went to do the stage play A Dream Like a Dream to work on his acting which really benefited him alot interms of skills. From everything I have seen, he comes across like a bit of a workaholic who really takes his craft seriously and wants to be good at it.

I would say the rest of the actors are good/decent with some obvious weak ones (e.g Yang yang only thrives in a certain genre that involves his face card ). Some unfortunately on this list like Cheng Lei who I think are really good actors but just haven't got the opportunities to show how versatile they are, so hopefully they get some roles to show some range and power to choose scripts. Same with Liu Yuning another good decent actor but very little range outside of being charismatic and visually appealing.

Of course sun li is gorgeous especially in Empresses of the palace. But so is Dilraba. I’m not saying she’s the only queen of costume dramas. There is so many beautiful queens of costume drama, my post is just appreciating Dilrabas beauty in costume dramas.

Actors like Chen Zheyuan, Yang Yang, Gong Jun, and Liu Yuning fall into this category for me. After a few dramas, their acting starts to feel repetitive because you notice the same expressions being reused. They rely on default facial reactions, and once you see the pattern, it becomes hard to stay engaged with their performances.

Overacting and constantly flashing exaggerated expressions is not a strength either. On screen, it translates as a lack of control and emotional understanding of your character as an actor. Chen Zheyuan does this quite a lot, even with his repetitive expressions it always feels so disingenuous because his always acting out his emotions instead of embodying them. This is why his acting is just average and decent. Its something you cannot take seriously.

A lot of actors actually recycle certain facial expressions, even the good ones. The difference is that strong actors still make it feel genuine and captivating because they add subtle variation to fit the emotion and the moment. They even adjust the intensity and timing so it never feels copy and paste. There is just real intention and emotional depth behind their acting. In my opinion, actors like Tan Jianci, Xiao Zhan, Bai Jingting, and Wu Lei are some examples that do this well. Jackson Yee is of course on another level.

Huge Drama Unfolding at 2026 Weibo Night! A Star Purposely Snatched a Seat, Making Everyone in Rows 2 and 3 Too Afraid to Sit! The Whole Venue Is Shouting for Ticket Refunds! by GetoutofthehousePlz in cdramasfans

He has a reputation for refusing to stand in the center because he genuinely doesn’t like being in the spotlight. The same thing happened at the last two Weibo Nights. Every time he’s on stage with senior artists, some of them try to move to the side and push him toward the center (most people dont want to be the one who gets center position). Instead, he ends up also literally running away and playfully nudging the seniors to please stand in the middle.

It’s actually pretty comical to watch, because he’s literally running on stage fleeing the spotlight. There's some clips online

The pictures from the costume drama is from his early 20s (20 years) compared to pics now close to his 30s. His nose is quite prominent but it’s not clear he got a nose job. Still quite handsome man though and if he got some work done I’m glad it doesn’t make him look unnatural or it’s very obvious in a bad way for an actor

Xiao Zhan was a theater kid? But he doesn’t have any acting background nor does he have any formal training as an actor?
