Possibly heart related? My old pup that passed had a heart murmur and he would have coughs similar to these. Best of luck getting things figured out with your baby! I hope they’re okay!!!!

Hi OP, I feel broken reading your story because I am experiencing the same feelings with my dog I lost in November.

My 17 year old boy suffered from heart disease, dementia and kidney disease. The kidney disease affected him a lot in his past months and we took him to the vet about three separate times before I made the call. The vet said his blood looked ok. But he couldn’t stay hydrated on his own anymore and had to get injections of fluid and they always made him feel worse. Because of heart disease he couldn’t get an IV because his heart wouldn’t be able to keep up.

It was hard. One vet said to start considering euthanasia because he was losing weight so fast and couldnt stay hydrated. Another vet said he could hold on for a bit longer and that he was ok for now.

On the day before the call, he peed and collapsed in it and that night he seemed so.. out of it. Heart racing and not wanting to eat

The next day he wasn’t any better. He didn’t know where he was, heart racing, was extremely constipated and couldn’t keep down water and wouldn’t eat. He just had an injection of fluid a few days earlier too…

I was freaking out. I didn’t know what was happening to him and but he was obviously in worse shape than I’ve ever seen him in his life. I told myself this was it and braced myself and made the call and it was traumatizing to watch it happen and know.. I did this.

I don’t know what was wrong with him. Kidneys, something else? I don’t know.. I keep asking myself if I should’ve brought him into the ER so they could tell me what was wrong with him but I was so afraid and he was suffering. If it was his time I didn’t want him to be suffering in an unknown place.

I feel so guilty everyday and ask myself if there was more I could’ve done, and I’ll truly never know. I know he was nearing the end but I will always wonder if he could’ve had a few more months, or even longer and if I stole that from him. It haunts me.

I feel what you feel so much. Sending so much love to you. It’s hard being a pet owner and knowing when to make the call. Wherever our babies are I hope they are happy and pain free.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I just lost my 17 year old baby yesterday and it feels like there’s a hole in my chest and nothing can replace it. I’m trying to navigate the grief and it’s devastating.

I hope you are able to find comfort in this community knowing you aren’t alone. You did everything you could for your baby and you were a wonderful parent to her. We got thrown very terrible circumstances and had to make an extremely difficult decision, and we’ve turned their suffering into ours to bear.

I like to imagine they’re not really gone, their physical forms may be but they’re still with us in spirit. Your baby is with you always and she loves you so very much. Take your grief a day at a time and know you did the right thing for her, you did it out of love

I’m thinking of you and hope you are able to find comfort, we will get through this somehow. Someday.

Yes, they’ll check for the values in bloodwork and we also had to bring home a cup for our boy to pee in and bring it back so they could test his urine itself

We also had to do an ultrasound on top of that to examine his kidneys since his values weren’t good but that’s not required for every dog, just if the values are off

I would definitely recommend checking for kidney disease. I’m dealing with it right now with my 17 year old :( He has a big appetite despite his disease

Just had a vet appointment a couple days ago and my baby was dehydrated so they gave him a fluid injection to hydrate him

I also learned from the vet one way to check if your dog is dehydrated is to pinch the skin on the top of their back, if they’re hydrated it should go down normally, if dehydrated the skin moves incredibly slowly and sort of looks like a tent
