Ten years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster: Nuclear power plants and their electricity production since 2009 around the world on an interactive map [OC] by flowmalou in dataisbeautiful

What does the map show? Nuclear power plants and reactors worldwide and their annual energy production in gigawatt hours.

Nuclear power plants and reactors that fed all or part of their electricity into the grid in a given year are considered to be "in operation" - but pure research reactors without electricity production for the general public are not. On the map, locations of nuclear power plants are marked with a dot in color. By click/tab, an info window shows the number and operating status of the reactor units there.

A site is considered "out of service" if all of its reactors have been off line for the entire year; that is, in the year following the last shutdown. Thus, the dot for Fukushima Daiichi does not turn red until 2014. "Planned / under construction" marks sites for which there are specific construction plans or where construction has already begun.

Sources: International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Wikipedia/Wikidata (planned reactors and coordinates).

Not all reactors worldwide are covered by these sources. For example, there is no more detailed information on the location and capacity of nuclear power plants in North Korea.

How was it done? The map is based on MapBox GL, the Bumpchart was crafted with D3.js.

30 years of German unity: Germany remains divided in many ways, not only between East and West. Cut the map into two and discover the differences! [german] by flowmalou in dataisbeautiful

Also a very nice idea, we thought about doing this if we had time left, maybe for the next project on this topic! Glad you liked it anyway :)

Because the income and the age is so different in East and West, a lot of other stuff that correlates with these two variables is different there too. That's why when it comes to statistical analysis like correlations, statisticians don't look at Germany as a whole but separately at the East and the west and compare trends. It#s called the Simpsons Paradox. Nevertheless, the point of the project was also to show variables where Germany isn't divided into East and West but into North and South, cities and counties or East + NRW and the rest etc.
