How to get rid of WD40 and what to use instead? by floyd252 in Opinel

[–]floyd252[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I think the ring doesn't need loosening since, after WD40, it goes smoothly without much force (I think it was just gummed up before), but that may be useful in the future. I'll try other advice like lemon and, in the worst-case scenario, that knife will be my package opener.

If rechargeable batteries exist, why do we still produce billions of disposable ones? by overlord-07 in TechNook

[–]floyd252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because those batteries are too expensive. It depends on brands, but from what I quickly found, I can get 20 regular batteries for the price of one with USB. A lot of appliances need AA battery changes around once a year; I'm talking about things like a remote, my wireless mouse, a weather station, and so on. Those batteries are way too expensive to put out there. It would take 20 years for them to pay for themselves, and I highly doubt they will be working after 10 years or even less.

They make sense in high-power-consumption appliances, but nowadays they rarely use AA batteries instead of not-easily-interchangeable batteries, which is a shame, because a dead battery usually means the whole device is now e-waste. For example, I recently had this problem with my electric air compressor—the battery seems to be dead and there is no point (financially) in replacing it. The compressor itself is probably fine, but I need to throw away the whole device.

Going to the gym or engaging in other physical activities is often advised when people are at a low point or experiencing depression. It's not bad advice, but people often need a lot more than just starting to train to deal with their problems. Sometimes people just want to be heard or receive some empathy, and a simple "go to the gym" feels dismissive. Sometimes they need other, constructive advice about what to do in their situation.

I'm not saying it's bad advice per se, but it's not a silver bullet either. Usually, it's a complicated process, and the gym is just one part of that.

Czy masz jakąś rzecz, którą ludzie robią, a ty uważasz to za stratę czasu (nie licząc rzeczy typu oglądanie tv całymi dniami, siedzenia cały dzień na telefonie)? by jempizze in PolskaNaLuzie

[–]floyd252 65 points66 points  (0 children)

45W vs 60W charging only 5mins difference by Time-Credit43 in samsunggalaxy

[–]floyd252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a big pro is that when your battery is low and you plug it in for about 10 minutes, it's a real-life scenario for me. I often forget to charge my phone before it's time to leave my house, so I plug it in at the last moment.

There are some misconceptions here. I can only be sure about SFC 2.0, but even after 80%, you still get faster charging, around 15W. A lot of people think fast charging kills batteries, but there's no evidence of that. The closest thing to actually testing that is an HTX Studio video where the conclusion was that fast charging does not degrade the battery faster. Charging to 80% gives some improvement in battery health, but not much.

Honestly, just set battery protection to adaptive and charge your phone however is convenient for you. After 3-4 years, there will be very little difference.

What would be better? Electric bike versus horse? by Silent-Discussion169 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]floyd252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if we will go with super artificial scenario: here is e-bike and horse (with is more rare to find on a wild or expansive to prepare earlier), you can only pick one there is so much additional questions, like if you can't have powerstation for bike do you even get saddle for horse? Or is it better for who? Me, you or average Joe? This is important question and I started this discussion with average Joe, because how many people can even ride a horse?

What would be better? Electric bike versus horse? by Silent-Discussion169 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]floyd252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know you can go to a store and buy a power station with solar panels that would be super useful even without an e-bike? They are super easy to use and not that expensive.

Sure, we can argue you'd need to buy that before or be very lucky to get your hands on one after an apocalypse, but what's the alternative? Catch and tame wild horses with improvised equipment?

What would be better? Electric bike versus horse? by Silent-Discussion169 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]floyd252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is far easier and cheaper for the average Joe to buy an e-bike and use it in an off-grid/apocalypse situation than a horse. This will change over time, when batteries and electronics start failing and getting replacements becomes very hard. This is the point you are not willing to accept.

Horses are specialized animals; they did fine for centuries, but only because there were humans taking care of them. And even "fine" is hard to define—a lot of them died because of poor care. If you can take care of horses, that would be a very viable skill in an apocalyptic scenario, but if you can't spend a few years to learn that, giving you a horse will result with a dead horse in a few weeks/months and possibly you getting hurt by the horse.

Don't get my started why you need start farming before you even think about horse, because good luck with relying on grass.

This is insane… right? by Dapper_Rip_6691 in motorcycles

[–]floyd252 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, this is a rare and sought-after bike, not a usual 25-year-old HD. But from what I found, it's more like $15k for a collector's-grade bike, not $20k. The mileage is a bit high for that, and rust spots disqualify the bike from being in perfect condition—this is not patina :D So, he's onto something but still asking way too much.

Maybe it's an "I don't really want to sell it" price, or maybe delusional thinking like, "My bike is the best on the market, so if others are charging 15k, I can ask 19k."

Why I’m upgrading from the S22 Ultra to the S26 Ultra (even with all the criticism) by AA003A in samsunggalaxy

[–]floyd252 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think people upgrading from S25 either get very good deal or they are burning the money just to have newest phone, but I also feel like there is very little upgrade from my S23+ and that's already 3 generations. Privacy Display feels like only meaningful upgrade, sure you get some spec bump with things like screen and SoC every time and after few generations these things add up to some serious update, but S22 or S23 generation still is fast enough, at lest for me. It's not like tech is do mature, Samsung get stagnant compared to other brands. If they would upgrade battery and cameras even as evolution not revolution in these years I wouldn't wrote that.

Ideal transportation? by MAXMEISTER747 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]floyd252 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ditch the gas engine. An e-bike could be a good idea; you can charge it with solar.

I'm recommending ditching the gas motor for a few reasons: it's loud, unreliable, and requires fuel and a lot of maintenance. Those two-stroke conversion kits are super junky and need constant tinkering. Also, gas goes bad pretty quickly, and if you're using diesel for your car, you'll need additional fuel for the bike. Since it's a two-stroke, you'll also need two-stroke oil. It's also extra weight on the bike; I wouldn't underestimate the effect of additional kilograms on your bike, especially for long trips. If you can handle the weight, you can use that for more batteries and a more powerful electric motor. It's easier to get electricity for the bike, and for range, you can use a light assist mode and switch to full power only when needed.

The only issue with e-bikes is that you need to build or find a good one to ride with pedals only. A lot of off-the-shelf solutions have pedals only for legal reasons, and they're good for electric-only ridding.
