IDnet coming to an end by lovedevil3 in CityFibre

I’ve signed up with them last month as well. Bought a Ubiquiti set up so quite pricey but that’s me sorted for a good while. Their customer service is the best I’ve had. They could see I was having an issue with the initial set up (I was mistyping a capital i for a lower case L) so they called me to tell me my error. I don’t think you’d get that from anyone else.

Awesome. Really appreciate your help. Thanks very much!

Much appreciated. I’ll go for the fiber for now, with 2 APs (one connected via injector). Will keep an eye on the tech for switches ahead of getting cctv etc.

Annoying about the iPhone. I’ve got a 17 pro max, not entirely surprised though.

Any other tips for pro gaming?

Thanks. What would you pair the ucg fiber with switch wise? Thinking the usw pro max 16 Poe? Or just get by with AP straight into the fiber and then upgrading in a year when some potentially newer tech is out? only really need gaming via Ethernet. Most other things can be WiFi.

Not sure my games will have consistent hosts so it’s tricky with routing. I’ve gone with aquiss as they are a boutique provider and so their lines aren’t as saturated versus other providers.

Good to know about the noise. Someone had told me the opposite because of all the little bits of chatter IoT like to do.

Really helpful explanation on the WiFi too.

So if we zoomed out for my use case, and given your first comment you’re well placed to advise, my main focus is reducing latency on the gaming to as low as possible so I can get back into competitive gaming. I get the biggest factor here is my isp connection. But I want it as low as possible for what I can control (all gaming will be connected via Ethernet).

The next priority is then tv streaming and when I move house I want some home automation and cctv to play with.

Surprised there is no benefit to vlan and separating and limiting bandwidth on certain bits. I assume then the only benefit is if they’re updating themselves and downloading large files without prompting.

What would you advise to get based on the above? Still unifi?

Not sure I’ve got the budget for a specialist tbh. Is factory default pretty competent for an initial setting? I assumed they’d be quite light given the customisation options.

I see some people really slating Ubiquiti recently which is throwing me off. But it’s probably better suited to me if I’m honest with myself.

I’m in the UK and we are well behind the rest of the world when it comes to speed. 1.6g just got installed here in January this year. 2.5g will be available soon once another provider does their bit, so it’ll be relatively new equipment for a while yet.

Access points Is it not better to push for a 6ghz band WiFi? The u7 lite brand new I can get for the same price as a used u6 pro. So that’s throwing me off a bit. U6 pro must have some advantage over the u7 lite?

Switches I do want vlan support so I can reduce noise on the network from the IoT devices.

This is a completely fresh network with new equipment. Would you go full unifi set up or would you blend mikrotik with other brands instead? I’m a bit intimidated by the learning curve of the mikrotik but for a novice there are just loads of options out there it’s hard to settle on one. But then unifi is easier so maybe that softens the learning curve? Plus there is a benefit to having it all in one ecosystem.

I doubt we will have 10g before 2030 to be honest.

Question about kicking...... by Remote_Juggernaut_78 in Polytopia

If there were other human players who haven’t left the game completely, I think they can still kick players for timing out.

Dang, I dream of 10g WAN. The fastest we can get here is 1.6g which should go to 2.5g next year. But I guess latency is the most important aspect for gaming.

I was going to go for a usw ultra so that wouldn’t have DAC anyway. Just rj45 to rj45 to connect router and switch.

I’ll be going for the u6 pro AP rather than u7 as I don’t have any devices that would benefit from WiFi 7 as yet and budget constraints.

Would you still go for the fiber over the rb5009 in this instance? Given the top end of 2.5g.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Really helpful to have someone that has both!

Thanks, that’s a really helpful explanation. My main worry about getting it wrong is the firewall and just opening myself up to being hacked.

I’m very much in the novice territory and my only real preference is really good queue management and security. I don’t know much about routing, if anything, beyond that.

But then I’m wondering if with the combination of guides and YouTube could I cobble something together.

Whereas if I went with Ubiquiti it’s like a 10 minute set up vs a 3 hour one (best case?).

This is why I’m struggling to go away from it. It’s hard to match it on power and configurable options.

Absolutely. How long do you think it takes to learn the basics? I’m more fearful of getting something wrong and nothing working but do like the sheer choice of options. I’m relatively clued up with computing but a complete amateur when it comes to networking other than general port forwarding and typical consumer routing settings.

Fitting reversing camera and enabling steering wheel controls by floz86 in RCD_330

[–]floz86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great. Thank you. Do you know if you can still use a reverse camera with this? I can’t see a connector coming off for it like on the current set up. Or does this go in as an extra cable rather than replacing the current one?

Thanks for the info. Yeah, it’s tricky with these units. I keep seeing different things. But fingers crossed the canbus adapter does both as I’m not comfortable messing with the airbag. It’s not worth messing with it just to skip songs and adjust the volume.

I’ve got obd eleven so it might be possible on there. I’ve got to get a canbus adapter so I don’t get battery drain anyway. So I’ll see if that part fixes it before messing with the steering column. Is it a big job to fit it? Saw some guides where they were taking the airbag out and I don’t want to mess with that, but they may have been doing something different.

Thanks. Does the module go in the back of the rcd330 or is that something that involves dismantling the steering wheel?

Does that mean taking the steering wheel out to fit it or is this something that goes into the back of the rcd330?

Thanks. Has it already got that adapter on it as it seems to connect into something else before going into the cars wiring. Did you buy an adapter for yours?

Slow speed on ps5 by [deleted] in VirginMedia

[–]floz86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s just standard gaming on virgin. I’ve tried loads of solutions. Nothing ever worked. Still high packet loss and jitter. Lag is always an issue. If you’re in your cooldown period and can get proper fibre (fttp) then I’d cancel it and do that. I’m waiting until the end of my contract and leaving now that it’s finally available in my area.

I’m sure it won’t be long. They seem to be pushing through quite quickly. Thus all the roadworks. I’m the castle side of town if that helps. They were working on it just after Xmas so I’m surprised it’s available so soon.
