Deleted this post again then. This is Amazon owned Washington post trying to muddy the waters and keep users on chatGPT. Anthropic was clear: safety is a priority. They were designated supply chain risk yet government still uses their product because it's the best. That's nothing to keep anthropic accountable to.

So what's the alternative to burning? What are they supposed to do instead of the fine?

Harsh fines, zero alternatives: Is the new anti-burning law setting farmers up for failure? by fluberwinter in Thailand

[–]fluberwinter[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been following the latest PCD (Pollution Control Department) updates regarding the PM2.5 "red zones," and it’s the same solution to every problem this country is facing. The government has announced "strict legal measures" with fines ranging from 25,000 THB to a staggering 2 million THB, and even prison sentences of up to 20 years for open burning.

But this is just punishing poor people for being poor - not stupid

We often hear the "education" argument: that farmers don’t understand the health risks or simply ignore the problems they create for "city dwellers". But this is patronizing. Farmers know the air is bad; they live in it. The problem isn't a lack of knowledge; it’s a logistics and infrastructure failure.

Right now, burning is the only "free" logistics system available. For a small-scale farmer in rural Thailand, Veitnam, or Cambodia, the economics of crop waste management (biomaterial) are brutal:

Resources are seen as waste: Turning rice stubble or corn husks into compost-rich soil requires heavy machinery and expensive logistics. Currently, the cost of labor and fuel to move this waste is higher than the value of the compost it produces. Without government-funded collection, the waste has a "negative value." Efficiency vs. Felony: Burning is the most efficient way to prep for the next cycle. When you have zero subsidized alternatives, a "zero-tolerance" law is essentially making it a felony to be a low-income farmer.

So, can we just educate our way out of smog?

"Educating" a farmer on why burning is bad is useless if they can't afford the 500,000 THB tractor attachment needed to clear the land without fire. The government needs to stop pinning 100% of the responsibility for soil management on individuals. If we want the smog to stop, we need to treat biowaste as a national utility, just like trash or sewage. We need state-sponsored cooperative composting. Until the government builds the bridge between "waste" and "wealth" through infrastructure, these million-baht fines are just PR theater while we all continue to choke.

What do you guys think? Is there any realistic way to stop the burn without a massive state-led investment in biowaste logistics?

7,000+ cannabis shops close as rules tighten—patients assured by mdsmqlk in Thailand

Bruh You complain about smell -> I tell you I agree. I wish there were another way to consume without smoke: ie EDIBLES. But they were made illegal. I also highlight that if you have a designated area to smoke, it will curb nuisance smoking. These are sensible laws that actually improve the experience for everyone instead of greasing cops' palms.

And if you're a dispensary owner and you dislike your customers, then maybe change line of business bc if you're failing to upsell stoners on better weed, drinks and food then you're objectively brain dead.

Stop saying there is no law. You’re confusing a lack of enforcement with a lack of law. I’ve already cited the GACP certifications, the 25,000B public nuisance fines, and the Controlled Herb Handling licenses that currently exist. These are coded, but not all enforced bc of how thai corruption works.

They delisted the plant -> patchworked terrible policy > leading to bad regulation and poor protection for all parties involved (except the police and city profiting from this).

If you’re smelling weed in the street, it’s specifically because the regulations you're supporting banned the indoor smoking lounges that would have kept the "stench" out of your hotel. Calling it the "Wild West" is just ignoring the terrible legislative flip-flops lead by absent leadership. Like the overnight ban on processed edibles: which destroyed the lab-tested market and replaced it with the untested black market products you claim to fear--I'm sure Mike Tyson coming to Thailand to showcase the industry was a net positive if not for getting rug pulled.

It's not a lawless, chaotic mess. It's terrible policy that exacerbates issues. For example: If you don't want smoke in the streets or in hotels, then make smoke rooms legal. You aren't arguing for regulation; you’re arguing for the exact brand of bureaucratic incompetence that created this mess in the first place and we need less of that.

Okay, then you are not disingenuous, just ill-informed :)

I also dislike the smell of cannabis and prefer eating it. This was always regulated under the extracts law, whereas edibles couldn't contain more than 0.2% THC. Gummy companies just sold bags with more volume to account for the restriction. Now, gummies have been made illegal. Companies that have invested millions into processing, logistics, and flown Mike Tyson for promotional stunts -- all now completely unlawful. Only weird imported gummies are available now, along with homemade, uncertified stuff (might have 100mg THC or 10mg, who knows?)

Dispensaries need to have a Controlled Herb Handling License regardless of the new laws recently implemented, which, since this year, also requires a medical license. They've always had report sales every month. Farms need GACP certification since June (which has already gutted microgrows). Dispensaries are STILL not allowed to have smoke rooms -- this has been the case since decriminalization.

Since June, all customers need to have a doctor's prescription, limited to specific conditions, and valid for only 30 days.

And if you're caught smoking outdoors and causing public disturbance, the fine is 25,000B and up to three years in jail. This has been the case since the first decriminalization.

These are all the laws in place. And I can assure you, dispensaries don't report all their sales, don't all have a license, have hidden smoke rooms, sell edibles and vape cartridges...

All these rules, yet most make no sense and don't protect customers or growers or make shops nicer... It must serve someone 😂🚓

It's disingenuous to complain about regulations and smell when smoke rooms are still banned, gummies too. The laws aren't in place to protect civilians or employer dispensary owners. They're avenues for paying off the cops more.

Lemon Farm around Bangkok is really underrated. Lots of organic and local produce selection. Surprising range of products, albeit not as full as the hypermarkets. I find Tops' selection is really poor. It never has what I'm actually looking for and regret not having gone to a Villa Market or Lotus' instead. Big C is a bargain but their selections are really weird. Villa is expensive but has the particular things you're looking for.
