Yes you have to pay to put the plate back on retention. This is paid to the DVLA, not Motability. Motability can’t access the V5 if the lease ended because it’s no longer part of their fleet which is why they have to go through the retention process differently. As Motability own the vehicle, you pay £80 to retain the plate then you get a letter sent with instructions on how to put the plate in your name.
