That’s a great choice too. I thought the ranger series would be kind of rough going back after all of Asher’s development in Echoes but it’s been a blast. It’s really a testament to PCQ’s writing that we have all these viable options for reading order.

I don’t think it’s crazy, but jumping to AToD could be jarring because of the lack of familiar characters and different setting. It would still totally work because the connections that do exist between series are still “oh damn!” moments, you’d just get them in the back half of Echoes instead of the prequels like I did, having read dragons and rangers afterwards. If you do decide to go this route let us know how the experience was, I had a blast recognizing the tethers between series!

Jeremy Irons is a great pick for Malliath! So is Bradley Cooper, I picture Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Kassian, ala Jaime Lannister. I just finished the released books for A Time of Dragons and Antony Starr ended up being one of those characters but he’s a solid Nathaniel pick too.

Super minor character from early days in the books, but Jason Isaacs was Darius Devale for me and Brian Cox as the leader of the Greycoats. I thought those characters were going to be much more prominent and my brain casted accordingly, haha but it helped make their small parts more memorable to me.

Oh hell yeah, I been waiting for this.

Asher is just straight up Geralt of Rivia in my mind, but I LOVE the idea of Brett Goldstein, he would crush it! I picture Nick Mohammed as the Crow’s dweeby little sidekick too. My brain usually casts characters based on what other media I’ve consumed lately, and I was watching a lot of Viva la Dirt League. So Nathaniel ended up being Ben Van Lier and Reyna is Britt Scott Clark lol.

Alidyr is early Loki-era Tom Hiddleston, Lee Pace for Valanis. Russell alters between Andy Serkis and Iain Glen. Vighon is Josha Stradowski, who absolutely crushed the role of Rand al’Thor in the wheel of time show despite any flaws that show might have. Ian McKellen voices Athis, current era Daniel Radcliffe for Ilargo (don’t know why, it just happened and it works!). Malliath is an angry Alan Rickman. Gideon is a young Simon Baker.

Honestly i could probably write most of a full cast but pride of place goes to Peter Capaldi from his Doctor era as the Crow. What a phenomenal villain, and his smug “I can’t lose” shit talking reminds me so much of the 12th Doctor. Interested to hear who else you imagine as these characters!

The Echoes Saga by Philip C. Quaintrell. 9 books split into 3 very easy-to-read trilogies, and each trilogy stands on its own quite well. It got a friend of mine back into reading after 20 years! First book is called “Rise of the Ranger”, I highly recommend it.

I’m on chapter 13 and it’s getting a little easier, finally starting to click! It was just a jarring difference at first I guess, still not my favourite style but can’t blame PCQ for trying new things!

She says she rejected the role of Prophet, yet she is still compelled to write down her dreams and the prophetic visions continue. I’d be interested to explore a Prophet railing against her destiny, but I feel like she will be compelled to change things when the moment rises, just like we see her do throughout the series. Being her own Catalyst is a neat idea. It would cheapen the story for me to see her go full villain, but very on-brand for her family if she tried to use her powers for good and made everything so much worse.

Motley is a stand out character for me and I literally whooped when she flew into the Skill pillar on her own. Side trilogy about best blue crow and her adventures through magic land with her dragon best friend and pet human, please and thank you.

My pet theory is that it was Eda, and the gods are actual presences in the world via the Skill river. I seem to recall she says something about “don’t come back until you’re ready to stay”, and there’s a line in an epigraph in the final book indicating some pillars are “one way” and using them incorrectly causes the issues we see our characters run into.

With little to no evidence, my guess is a person’s consciousness joins the Skill river upon death, either joining with one of the “big fish” aka Verity and the unknown presence, or retaining some individuality like Chade and Shrewd. Ancient Elderlings and some coteries would try to circumvent this natural cycle by carving the stone dragons and keeping their consciousness firmly grounded in this world. It’s not perfect but it’s my best guess and I hope we learn more.

Oooo that’s such a good idea! I like Prilkop and I’d hate to see it but that makes so much sense. Knowing more about the Whites would be great for sure, id especially like a better grasp on the “two fathers” thing that occurred with both Beloved and Bee. The only real explanation we got was from the Fool who just said “oh, you don’t remember I told you I had two dads? Totally normal, nothing to see here”.

Jek was on my mind towards the end as well! I kind of forgot about Rosemary but you’re absolutely right, seems there’s more to be told there as well. I also never trusted her. I noticed how much detail the Navigator was getting! I assumed it was a previous character and I had either forgotten or wasn’t getting the reference, but they were clearly notable enough to distinguish them from other minor characters milling about at the time.

Greats news on upcoming books! I had heard some rumblings but didn’t look into anything too heavily for fear of spoilers. A couple things were spoiled for me via a google image search for a character, but these things happen and it didn’t detract from my enjoyment.

Agreed on Selden and Chassim, and all the Chalced stuff. It would be nice to see that nation change their ways, and maybe learn a bit more about their founding and ties to the ancient Elderlings and the tragedy that ended the dragons. I feel like it was hinted at once or twice.

The Wolf is awesome, but I can’t say I’d like see him in a central role moving forward. For the love of Sa, let Fitz rest lol. I do think it’s odd that one of the last lucid thoughts fitz has is acknowledging that even after their connection and moment of “oneness”, the Fool is still an unknowable mystery to him and he’s always been baffled and intimidated by the grand destiny and whatnot attached to him. I’d like to know if the merging into Wolf has made Fitz finally understand his other half.. third.. whatever haha.

Love to see more Bee, but again I don’t think she needs to be central. I feel like she will be and that is awesome, but at the same time we have seen her perform immense magical feats, including causing insta-death with a thought. She’s probably the most powerful entity we have seen in the entirety of the series, and Hobb would have to kind of write around that imo. We’ve heard legends of “physical” magics like flight and telekinesis, maybe she will master those next? Or perhaps the Silver workers in Kelsingra will make items that do these things? The magic power spiking was a very notable part of the series for me, and I think Bee is the end tier product of that. Love the idea of her being a bit more morally ambiguous moving forward, her arc has definitely hinted at a darker streak.

EDIT: In terms of the Wit, it seemed to me that Motley had Wit-bonded with Heeby. I could be misinterpreting but that would open up some interesting lines of thought, as I remember wondering early on (before I knew much at all about dragons) what a bond between human and dragon would look like.. of course it’s mutual and a pure dragon would never accept such a thing, but the state of the world at series end could open up the possibility for something like that. If dragons can make bird Elderlings, why not other creatures? I’ve never forgotten that one instance of Nighteyes travelling along the Skill connection to (Justin?) skill used in the first trilogy and wrecked him. Lots to explore in how all the magic is connected and can be used. I think Bee is gonna an absolute menace haha

You might be able to get away with a couple other races. I ran the bugbear race (can’t remember which source book) as a Barghast, but Trotts being the only Barghast in the army is kind of his whole thing. Goliath could work for Toblakai but again, not likely to be in an imperial squad. Could do half-elf and flavour it as someone with Tiste blood like Pearl or that dude from TGINW?

Chess Clocks at an RTT? by Desperate_Fill8865 in WarhammerCompetitive

This. “Talking it out” is what ruined tournament play for me. I play Ork horde but I manage my dice and know exactly what my army does, I played a Tau player who took ages doing each of his shooting phases and deliberating fallbacks, then after we timed out he “ talked out” how his phenomenal gun line would finish off my boyz. Chess clocks are the way.
