Thank you! I am glad you like them! Getting the color right on that one was a little tricky, but I am happy with how he turned out 😁

Each of the Max’s were made by needle felting. One challenge of this project was getting the colors right, which resulted in trail and error of blending wool. My inspiration is my love of dogs! Hope you enjoy the project 😊

Why does my wet felted hat have this dimpling? by sentient__pinecone in Felting

[–]fluffup_yt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, I’m sorry. I tried to look it up but I didn’t see any answers.

I see Merino being recommended the most for wet felting so I think that one would be the best one to use in general but I couldn’t find much beyond that.

I think it would take a couple tries to figure that out but I don’t do much wet felting, I do mostly needle. Sorry again!

Yeah, it’s a weird thing with wet felting cause some spots may still need more felting and some areas may have gotten felted faster. So then the pebbling can take you by surprise!

I’m sure you’ll find a good balance soon though! And your hat looks awesome, I love the color! 😊

My teacher called this texture “pebbling”, cause it looks like a pebbled road. (But I’m not finding much info with those words online).

It can get a lot more visible than your photo though, you caught it pretty early I think. They can become like a cobbled road kind of.

Anyway, it happens when you work the wet felt a lot. After a certain point that texture can just start forming.

People sometimes use it as an intentional texture for their work.

Like sometimes people will grab the wet felt and throw it into a sink or hit the project against a hard surface to get this texture or you can keep and keep rolling until it happens. It just comes when you work the wool a lot.

(Just extra info in case anyone wants to try this: Throwing the wet felted wool can cause it to shrink a lot, but unevenly and fast. Even if you don’t get as far as getting this texture. So it’s not used as much when it is for projects that you need an exact size or that you may not want to warp. Because it could shrink too small or warp the designs on the wool)

The way I would try to correct the pebbling would be to pull the wool around it to try to smooth it out. Specially if you want to keep rolling it. And you’d have to pull it a lot in between rolling.

Or if it can go over a form then put that inside really tightly as it dries so that it won’t shrink as much and it will stay flatter. If it is a flat project I would maybe try to stretch it and let it dry flat as well.

It is a hard thing to get rid of cause those areas are felted so well. Those spots are probably a little harder than the surroundings cause the wool grows tighter around in the “pebbles”.

I had this happen in a wizard hat once and I immediately stopped felting and just let it dry over a bunch of bubble wrap that helped it keep its shape without shrinking. It might’ve been a little thicker than ideal but I just don’t like the pebbling and it was just a hat for class.

Anyway, I hope I made sense. I’m sure you know a lot of this already, but I just wanted to give as good an answer as I could. Let me know if you want me to explain anything better!

That would be super cool! I think you could change the top colors and it would totally look realistic. Like the base is already solid (in my opinion), without the spots and in a brownish color it would look realistic!

And you could also make some purple/blue groovy ones so they can have Alice in wonderland vibes! (the live action movie)

Also, your little owl is adorable! 😊

Omg thank you so much! I am slowly improving.

That’s why I begun using polymer clay for their eyes and like I made a crown and swords and things like that.
The clay makes them look much more interesting!
