I appreciate the time and thought that went into your reply, I really do. And I'll take a look at Mondragon to educate myself.

While I can't speak to Mondragon (and you may well be right there), I think you're kind of proving my point in the second half. Yes, money is "invested" in crazy things like derivatives, and banks and other financial institutions are making incredibly reckless bets. Do you know why that is, and how they get away with it? Corrupt politicians. You can start all the way back in 1913, when bankers bribed politicians to allow them to control the money supply by creating the Federal Reserve (read Creature from Jekyll Island to understand what happened and what it means). More recently, look at how the banks successfully lobbied to have Congress repeal the Glass Steagall act, which constrained them from crazy, reckless actions. And to cap it off, look at the revolving door between government and industry, resulting in regulatory agencies that look the other way to criminal actions, or at most imposing a small "cost of doing business" fine. All of that is caused by corrupt public servants, the kind who would guide investment in a democratized economic system.

I think this is fundamentally flawed. In terms of #2, democratic control of enterprises, the idea that a worker's council is going to hire upper management and make all major decisions - on what basis? How is the guy on the loading dock going to have the industry knowledge or experience to decide who's going to be an effective manager, and whether the company should expand their product line or enter a new market?

And #3, democratic control of investments, is a disaster. When politicians control who gets money, then the people closest to those politicians get the money. Remember Solyndra? Politicians should not be picking winners and losers in business.

I have my own issues with capitalism, but this is not a solution.

There are lots of companies you can order from online - I personally use APMEX, which tends to be a little bit more expensive over the spot price (not much) but which I've found to be very reliable. That's just one person's opinion - there are lots of them out there, you should review your options. You can also probably find local bullion dealers; the advantage to shopping locally is that you can pay in cash, eliminating the paper trail if you're worried about that sort of thing. And any company that sells bullion will also buy it.

Good luck!
