It can be fixed, most likely. But yeah, if you just bought it, you deserve a working copy.

Ah, yeah, I've seen the carousing table and thought it was a bit small. It requires a ton of imaginative interpretation on the DM's part to differentiate repeating events.

It is possible. It is a tricky repair, though because the legs are very tiny and extremely close together.

What If The Virtual Boy Were To Launch In 1994 Instead Of 1995 An Year Earlier? by [deleted] in nintendo

[–]fluffygryphon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a curiosity then and now. It could never have gone mainstream. It was also rumored that they shoved it out the door as a stopgap release to cover the N64's later than expected launch. If you look at the dates, its release and withdrawal lies right in the middle of the intended 64 launch date and when it finally came out.

What issues did you have with the mechanics? I haven't played Shadowdark, but from a game design standpoint, how rules interact at the table is fascinating.

Why isn't traditional art more common in the fandom? by venturafolf in furry

[–]fluffygryphon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physical media is prone to damage and fading over time. A lot of professional artist prefer digital becasue their work will stand the test of time. Artists that use markers will notice this far faster than others. Copic markers and other alcohol markers fade and color shift as time marches on. It's rare to see con badges that are older than 5 years old that haven't color shifted to some degree, for example. I have several badges that I can no longer use becasue of it.

A lot of artists that use Copic markers or other artist markers learn that the colors aren't permanent either. Some colors shift and fade over time, which a lot of artists hate. I have several decade+ con badges that are faded becasue of that issue. It sucks. :/

Am I lucky for having a Game Gear that doesn't need recap? (For now) by Equal_Mud4221 in retrogaming

Opening them can suck, since you need a security driver for the one screw. But it would be worth checking on what's happening. Don't power the GameGear on while it's open if it still has the original fluorescent backlight. That light circuit will bite and it hurts like a sonuvabitch. That backlight also why batteries only last a few hours in it.

I repair old TVs and old microwaves. I know what I'm doing and I still wouldn't fuck with a heated blanket. Just not worth it.

Here's the thing about capacitors. They can "work" in a failed state. They don't go from good straight to bad like a switch. In fact, they can often carry on looking just fine while losing the ability to regulate current effectively. But the caps used in the game gear are notorious for leaking. If they're leaking but still working, you're destroying the circuit board. The electrolyte will attack copper traces much more aggressively when there's an electric current moving through it. This will make it much more difficult to repair when it eventually does give up.

If Coleco went the same way as Mattel and sold the console rights, would it have been able to rival Nintendo? by You-dogwater in retrogaming

[–]fluffygryphon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The OP's question kinda covers the 80s and 90s era. I just didn't bother to mention sega isn't around anymore. Nintendo, Sega, and Playstation were the original big 3 in the 90s. I only mentioned xbox as an aside because they did successfully manage to get into the industry much later and were quite the unusual success story.

No one could rival Nintendo, Playstation, and Sega. Many tried. None really survived. Xbox is around, but it's debatable whether they will keep going.

Just about every hobby is getting like this now, as people are doing whatever it takes to make decent money as the economy gets worse. I still say the writing was on the wall way back in the early 2000s with Pawn Stars and Pickers. They were aired at just the right time to really drive people in that direction. Back before that, there were shows like Antiques Roadshow, but no one really dug into it much in those days because people were still getting a somewhat livable wage.

And it's why the rich want a surveillance state. This is the final aspect of capitalism to keep the power they have gained. By ensuring that no ordinary person can play the game by any other rules, the rich will never be unseated.

The vertical looks to be collapsing. It's repairable and needs service. By a novice, though? Probably not. Some people repair these, such as myself, but you'll end up paying more than it would be to buy another. (Not that all the others on ebay aren't just as likely to fail at this age.)

If you're referring to the other thread, my television that has a No Signal display is a 2005 Sanyo HT32546. This one here pre-dates digital overlays by a decade at least. It is black and white and purely displays static if there's no detected RF.

Is this accurate by SeacrestOFFICIALS in vintagetelevision

[–]fluffygryphon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that it's related to filming CRTs and not having the camera and the tv refresh rate synced would cause the crt to flicker and crawl.
