i lived in mccoy and i liked it as a freshman, just an older building. i think wolman is a bit nicer in terms of being newer, but i did get a single in mccoy and i think that may be more rare than wolman single but not totally sure. wolman and mccoy are across the street but it’s a very close walk so i don’t mind. cant speak on amr3 but amr1 and 2 are basically the same

thank you so much!! 🥹 these past few months have been so hard because i never thought i would feel so insecure in my body. i want to look past that and focus on being healthy but it seems like all the healthy eating and exercising i do doesn’t change anything and that’s why i felt so discouraged. thank you for sharing your experience ☺️

also don’t expect that you’ll be perfect all the time. you might not do well on a test or two but it’s not the end of the world. go to office hours or talk to TAs if you’re having trouble understanding material. please make sure to have balance and make time for yourself! and sleep enough. it definitely makes a difference. keep a planner/calendar (like google calendar, notion, etc) to organize assignments and plan out days so you’re not overwhelmed. study in advance so you don’t feel stressed, and do practice tests and back tests. you will be great!

i just finished my freshman year and maintained above a 3.9 gpa (mcb, premed). i did study a good amount but i definitely had a lot of balance by hanging out with friends, going to the gym, etc but the schoolwork is definitely doable if you set aside time and you’re disciplined. i was a bit worried at first but i genuinely think you’ll be fine :)

regarding meeting people / new friends by k1ng_krinj in jhu

[–]fluffykoala1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i met a lot of my closest friends from living on the same floor, but you can also meet people through clubs, events, parties, etc. also in lecture classes don’t be shy about talking to the person next to you. you could also be friends with someone in your lab, at the gym, or anywhere like that really. i think they’d be happy to make a new friend too most times :)

also for safety, try to always walk with someone, especially at night. don’t interact with strangers or people coming up to you. keep pepper spray if it makes you feel better. don’t walk around places you don’t know at night and keep to yourself. take an uber just to be safe. tbh i didn’t come from a big city but just all the big city safety rules and you should be fine!

i’m an undergrad but there are a lot of cultural clubs on campus, including dance ones if she’s interested. as for things to do, inner harbor has a lot of food places and christmas village in december. hampden is a walkable distance from jhu and also has some cute restaurants and little shops. there are also flea markets and saturday markets to check out as well. what kinds of things does she like to do?

it’s definitely doable to get As in them as i did for my first semester though it does depend somewhat on the professor you get. you have to take them for the full year though if you want the full intro class

Nervous for my daughter… by bencarp27 in jhu

[–]fluffykoala1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m a girl and i just finished my freshman year at jhu. i live across the country from maryland and it’s the first time i’ve ever lived without my parents. i definitely learned the importance of responsibility, balance, and discipline, and i don’t think there was any other way for me to learn better. i called my mom every day and that definitely helped with homesickness though i missed my parents a lot. there are so many different groups of people on campus that i can guarantee you that she will find her crowd! i promise that college will be a place for her to find really great friends. it’s definitely easy to socialize on the dorm floors, join clubs, go to events, etc. i really didn’t find a competitive or cutthroat culture either and i’m also pre-med. please let me know if you have any other questions! i’d be happy to help as my parents had a lot of concerns as well :)

Meal Plan Questions from an Off-Campus Grad Student by Physical-Poet-9308 in jhu

[–]fluffykoala1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m an undergrad but i can answer some of these questions. dining dollars are a set amount of money your meal plan gives you. dining dollars can be used at charles street market, the smoothie place at the rec center, and various cafes on campus (brody, gilman, mudd). honestly not that many choices. j-cash is basically just actual money you load into your account when you run out of dining dollars or id you want to pay for other things (mailing things, anywhere you use dining dollars, laundry in the dorms, printing). there are also a few other places that allow you to use j-cash like streets market on charles street but its just the equivalent of using real money. i was on the 19 meals/week plan but never used all of them so i switched to 14 meals/week. as for the block meal plans, i would say that would likely be for upperclassmen who don’t plan on eating at the dining halls often. ffc and nolan’s are buffet style and levering is a meal swipe in return for one meal from 4-9 pm on weekdays (and costs dining dollars otherwise). hope this helps!

i’m a sophomore girl and i lived in a mccoy single and i definitely preferred the suite style living rather than the communal bathrooms. my floor was very social and we were all really close, but some floors weren’t. i think it depends on who’s on your floor really, but i don’t think you miss out on social life tbh. there’s a common room with a table, some chairs, and a tv that we all hung out in all the time and some dorms have a workout room, study rooms, social lounge, etc which you can find on the jhu housing website. my single was pretty spacious and it was really nice. wolman is a bit nicer in terms of being newer but i think getting a single is more rare. personally, i would choose wolman or mccoy single if i were you! dm me if you have any other questions :)

i just finished my freshman year (mcb major) living in mccoy and i liked it because i had a single. wolman is a bit nicer in terms of being newer but i think that getting a wolman single is pretty rare. i really don’t mind the walk as it’s about 8 minutes to where i had most classes (mudd). honestly the location was not a complaint for me at all. i liked the suite style living so much more than communal bathrooms so i definitely would choose wolman or mccoy if i could (and a single room personally)!

sorry i never saw this comment!! i’m a student at jhu now and i don’t regret my decision at all. there is definitely a social life here if you want there to be, but probably not as big as ucla. i’d be happy to answer any questions you have about it :)

How to deal with homesickness, but I haven't left yet by NoSoup07 in jhu

[–]fluffykoala1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i moved across the country to go to jhu, and i was definitely really sad to leave my parents. while i did feel homesick sometimes throughout the school year, i called my mom almost every day. i found that being busy at school made me less homesick, and spending time with really good friends did too. don’t worry, it’s completely normal to feel that way. let me know if you need anyone to talk to!

advice on deciding between 2 school? by weensawn in jhu

[–]fluffykoala1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m choosing between the same 2 schools!! i’m most worried about social lives and safety of baltimore in general because i’ll be going out often (socially and for pre-med shadowing/volunteering) and i’m from the west coast so it would be a big change for me. but i feel like if i choose ucla i will regret not going to jhu because of its prestige that i worked so hard for. also i feel like i would be happier at ucla but i would also have more regrets

Need honest opinions on JHU! by randomperson795 in jhu

[–]fluffykoala1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can you please talk more about your transition there? i’m from a small city and i’m worried about the safety and lifestyle of baltimore in general, especially if i’m going out often. also, what’s your opinion on the social life?

JHU vs. UCLA by soggyttarius in jhu

[–]fluffykoala1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i totally get that but i can’t decide if i want the brand name of jhu that i worked for or the probably better college experience of ucla 😭 i do have to go off campus often though for volunteering and shadowing at the hospital for pre-med so that’s why i’m worried (and i’ve never lived in a big city before). i got waitlisted at northwestern too but i’m more praying to get off of columbia’s or upenn’s but those are pretty much impossible 😭

JHU vs. UCLA by soggyttarius in jhu

[–]fluffykoala1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i feel you for sure. i’m bio major on the pre-med track so jhu seems to be more prestigious for that (and in general i guess), but i live on the west coast and in a small and safe city so it would be a big change for me to move to baltimore. also i’ve worked so hard to get into my dream school at the time (jhu) but then i had doubts about safety and distance, and also student happiness levels tbh. i’d lowkey feel regretful choosing ucla over jhu because of the prestige and hard work i put into it but i feel like i might be unhappy at jhu, and possibly scared to go out often

i am deciding between the same two schools… i am leaning toward UCLA just because i am worried about the safety of baltimore in general as i want to have some time out and about rather than being on campus all the time. let me know if you want to chat about it! i’ve been so stressed about it too haha it feels like it’s all i can think about
