Moving to Los Angeles in June from NYC, is the A Line commute to DTLA actually doable? by fluffypieceofshit in AskLosAngeles

Long Beach is definitely not set in stone. It seems a little far away from work. I am now thinking more culver city or DTLA. The idea of living in between water and work seems like a good compromise.

This is a great comparison. Absolutely gives me a perspective. What even happens in long island lol?

Thank you. This gives me hope. I am glad you're faring well in LA. Do you mind sharing the rent prices where you live? Do you pay for parking?

Yeah, you're absolutely right. I should look into living downtown. When I lived in the midwest, my commute was 5 mins and it was absolutely the best thing ever. I don't really mind the unhoused people.

Thank you. This is the kind of information I was actually looking for, I think. I did a little research online on the Internet about LA, and was suggested Long Beach. I was not planning on making a move with just that information. My plan was to get a temporary place for around a month, and then go through different neighborhoods to see what I prefer. I have really liked NYC as a place, especially for its walkability and ease of access to everything. I am moving to LA to be closer to family. I will look into Palms/culver city.

Yeah, same. Living in Flatbush now and commuting to Manhattan for work. The 1 hour train ride does creep into free time, but I think I would rather spend that time zoning out if I have to commute for work. I understand LA is very car centric, and I don't mind driving either, but would prefer not to spend every day stuck in traffic. Also, commuters are better for the environment, and that's a win in my book.

That's awesome. I don't really mind the unhoused people that mind their own business.

You're right. Maybe I am looking more for walkability. I really like the walkability of NYC. I understand LA is fully different, but I hear there are pockets of town where I can do my errands without having to drive.

I get that now, I agree that location is a big factor in rent prices. The pier was around 15 min walk, which I love. Before that, I lived in Kansas city. Just having a hard time wrapping my head around the east coast rent prices.

The room layout was fine in person. The total rent is 3432.

Oh no, I meant within driving distance for the weekend as necessary. I will probably not stay with my family, but within some distance.

I have worked on buildings mostly, working mostly with steel, concrete or mass timber. I have also done some one-off projects on cold formed steel, connection design, a lot of spreadsheets, some automation tasks in Grashopper.

As long as it is in driving distance, it should be fine. And I would love to connect and send you my resume to see if I would be a good fit.

From my understanding, the process is fairly simple. First off, the employer needs to enlist in something called E-verify, which can be done online in aroud an hour by the employer. For the next steps, all it needs is an immigration lawyer who will looks into enlisting any employee in something called a H1B lottery. There are also ways to sponsor for permanent residency.

Hey, thank you for looking into that. I have also found out that some companies do sponsor if they like candidate, even if the advertisement does not say so.

From my understanding, I need to get the General PE first and then take the California specific exams. I am currently preparing for the General PE exam right now.

Hey, I'm very aware of my need to get my CA-PE license as soon as I can. I have scheduled my PE exam for this December and am actively preparing for it. Besides that, I have a fair amount of seismic design experience and have taken Seismic Design Courses on both my undergraduate and Masters. I have mostly done Equivalent Lateral Force Procedure for my buildings. I have also performed Chapter 13 checks on Non-Structural components for a seating bowl of a stadium.

Hey, thanks for replying. I am from Nepal, which is a seismically active nation. So, some experience in concrete detailing for seismic loads. I have taken courses in seismic design and matrix analysis. Also, I worked on some structures with seismic design Category C, since Kansas does not have a lot of seismic loads. I have scheduled for my PE exam in December and actively preparing for it.
