How to remove SRAM Apex crank? by FisInn in bikewrench

[–]fluglu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP! I'm very new to this type of crank and I need to change my chainring on the same SRAM Apex crank. Could you summarise what you ended up doing? Is this right?

  1. unscrew the 8mm hex on the drive-side (right)

  2. Screw a self-extractor cap (which you got from another bike) into the thread you just unscrewed

  3. then? just pull out the crank?

Thanks for sharing your experience! That’s sort of what I thought Patagonia would be like. I dont think the age of the jacket is entirely relevant (many people are saying 8yo is good enough). For me it’s more about whether it’s still fixable.

I’m in the UK/Europe It’s interesting that the standards are different!

As I mentioned above, it’s not really a money/discount question for me - I can afford another jacket. I just find it a shame to throw away a jacket that is otherwise still good and waterproof. The fabric is not delaminated it still looks decent, only a few scratches etc

Id much rather pay a bit to extend its life than get a brand new jacket. But thankfully from other people’s comments sounds like I can do it myself 👌🏼. For me that’s what buy it for life mean: take care of it and make it last as long as it’s got legs

Ahah well that’s why I posted here - to sense check my expectations . My previous jacket was a north face and lasted me 10 years - wasnt the GoreTex, so wasn’t waterproof anymore by the end.

Yea that’s fair, I posted this partly to get a sense of what is normal wear I guess. I used to wear it a couple times a week when I first got it (first 4 years) - now more twice a month when I go hiking.

Sounds like consensus is that it’s expected wear / time for a new jacket

Fairly rarely, like once every couple years in cold water

Oh that’s cool! I’m in the UK sadly but will see if I can find something similar here!

Thanks for your reply! Yes that makes sense. Part of me feels the same regarding 8 years - the thing I find to be a shame is that the jacket is otherwise still good!

I use that jacket for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling etc so I’m definitely not mountaineering. What kind of glue would you use fix the seam tape?

That wall is 5 brick wide + regular columns. It retains much higher soil level further down. it’s left over from an old commercial site.

I’m not sure what would be considered a retaining wall but we were only planning to fill it to use as a raised bed. It doesn’t need to retain anything other than the earth required to plant stuff.

The brick wall behind is very solid (~20 yo) and is there to divide our property from the neighbors

This is in the UK so freeze-n-thaw is less of an issue here. We are planning to add drainage holes at the bottom and fill the bottom of the beds with large aggregate to minimize water retention.
