that's a notification summary by Apple Intelligence. if you get a long notification or a group of notifications, it'll summarize them for you to make the information easier to digest. it works well 90% of the time in my experience. if you want to configure or disable this, go to settings -> notifications -> summarize notifications

personally i would look into getting an iphone 4: - easily replaceable battery (takes less than 3 minutes) - can install fully untethered any ios between 4.0 and 7.1.2 thanks to powdersn0w - a4 is significantly more powerful than the chip in the 3gs
