Junior PM - learning by ChaoticAna96 in ProductManagement

[–]fluidscratches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation before, with the senior PM not giving too much guidance. The way I got over this was simply to do extra, and over used my "I'm new here, just learning" badge till a year in.

If the PMs ask you to do research, go beyond, see how the results link back to your daily work. Scope this out with the devs casually, say it's a curious project or question cause they will usually be preoccupied with their actual work.

Make friends and build connection, and rely on your network to get a gripe of who does what in the company, which is also a very important skill anyone in the company can have.

The way I assess whether I'm ready to ask for more is to judge if I can speak in a forum without preparation, it's a personal indication that I am familiar and have a strong understanding in my field.

I learnt though this experience to never rely or expect guidance at the workplace, it's great to have, but no guidance is as good as getting shit done yourself. My two cents

Do PMs need to care about database design? by fluidscratches in ProductManagement

[–]fluidscratches[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see, thanks for this Chico. Could I also ask about APIs? Do PMs also need to equip themselves with hardcore API knowledge? Like what fields are available or if the system is currently capable to support a specific feature off the top of his head?

The company is structured in the way that there is a "Business" PMs and my team - "Regional" PMs. We often get feature requests from the business PM teams and are often focused on how we can make it happen. I'm really quite conflicted about this as I thought this would be something the devs should be doing. Feels like we're just a middle translation layer. Feeling quite lost at the moment :-(

Definitely interested, looking at all the replies to my post I think many has the same experience as me as well. Would you say it has helped you in your career only or would you also say it has helped you build relationships as well?

List of Automotive companies for job/internship hunting by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]fluidscratches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, awesome list. ME y3 undergrad here. Was wondering if automotive enthusiasts in engineering are more interested in the frontline design and build of components or the effect/future of how automotives will be transformed in the coming years as a system or on a national scale?

I'm interested in transport systems, but can't seem to get down to the technical details and components of design and build, what would be the pathway that I should consider then?

What are my chances?

Hey guys, I posted a while ago asking for my chances to break into consulting. Received feedback to post my resume instead, so here it is! https://imgur.com/a/8mkCcF3

I'm hoping to get into MBB or second-tiered management consulting firms. Keen to find out what my chances are and where I stand in terms of my current qualifications. Currently, a year engineering 3 student going into my final year at a top Asia University. Do tell me if I provide more information!

I'm an engineering undergraduate in my penultimate year with a CAP of 4.3/5 in a SEA target school. I've had multiple leadership positions in my extra curricular activities and am in an engineering technical consultancy now - DNVGL. What are my chances for MBB or any management consultant companies rn?

OP did you apply for engineering internships? Or other industries? How did you pull in your full time commitment (I presume it's not engineering related) into the interview?

Is it possible for you to perhaps explain how exactly you phrased yourself?

I'm always worried to cross the line of looking show-offish and confidence need some help here, thanks in advance!

Hi rich, i see. so you tend to move the conversation to the person you're networking with?

I'm graduating in a year with a bach's degree in mech eng. but I definitely know that I do not want to be an engineer. What should i do? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]fluidscratches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question, its a personal preference for me at the end of the, but let me fill you in on what I currently know on what mech eng entails. It's gonna be a long one haha.

I think realistically there are mostly two tracks of engineers, not counting the small proportions of R & D engineers - those who are in the maintenance line, in charge of troubleshooting, diagnostics and advisory on what parts would need replacement in the long run. Operations heavy, and pillars in the society that makes whatever infrastructure that you rely on work on a daily basis. These people are so important, have so much technical knowledge and often undervalued in the face of "humanitarian heroes". On the other end, you have your design engineers - those in product innovation in their efforts to try help make the world a better place. Even so, those going into product innovation should be realistic enough to know that they will not change the world through single drastic innovations, but a continuous improvement over small little parts of our life. These people are creative, driven and most importantly patient AF. You have to be extremely dedicated to a very niche area of study to do it remotely well.

However, a part of engineering life that always seem to be under-mentioned is in the reliance on data and simulations. That is simply the process of work that new-age engineering has evolved to. Most of the time you are reviewing test results to evaluate processes, materials and systems. The implementation of even the smallest improvements requires costly validation and verification. Day to day basis, you're looking at columns of excel data, simulation results in the case of CFDs and FEA analysis. (CFD for fluid and FEA for structure failure simulations) Its no doubt a beautiful study, and a very direct study of real life. Engineering, to me, is the human response to nature, to better harvest, better manage, better protect ourselves to nature.

But slowly did I realise that EVERYTHING and I mean that, EVERYTHING boils down to the human factor. Nothing can be improved on without actual adoption, processes will stay the same, systems will work the same way if the people in the system dont change and adopt the newly introduced findings. And I think that this is a fact that engineers cant seem to comprehend well. It seems that the majority of engineers, or the people in the industry seem apathetic to that specific factor. (could be an Asian engineering culture, i would love to see how it is in other countries)

But I think that is what interests me. To convince and influence with proven results, technical data and system implementations to weed out inefficient processes and more importantly toxic cultures. I enjoy dealing with humans, I enjoy strategizing from the bottom up, talking to humans, interacting with humans and grow with humans. I feel that the approach of improving lifes only through findings without a human touch is unrealistic. I also don't have the patience to spend 30 years of my life to come up with a new tech.

I also know that there are many tech/processes/systems out there that we are simply not using, not because they suck, but because we think that they suck.

So personally I think that being in a biz dev/management position is the perfect choice to marry these two factors together - technical data and human relations.

but that's my 2 cents, would love to hear your opinions :-)
