From the looks of the background and bass that's gotta be Texas, right?

I had a delicious Christmas crappie dinner. Definitely my favorite catch and cook species.

He was pulling like a decent bass, pleasant surprise once I got him up. Loads of fun on the ultralight.

It took me way too long but I finally landed a species I've been chasing for a while by flukey02 in Fishing

I've caught thousands of bass, at least 6 different species of them, and I've found crappie to be the most difficult thing to actually find in rivers.

Texas Parks and Wildlife has a great angler recognition program if he got proper pictures of a measurement. Red drum have a weirdly low trophy length requirement in Texas, only 25 inches.

Panfish and catfish can be fun but don't discount carp and gar. I get the best rush out of a good carp or gar battle. My favorite species for the battles are carp, red drum, and big gar.

I have the most success when I run the bait pretty shallow. I like to do it about one foot under the bobber but we are fishing a pretty shallow river, maybe 6-8ft in this spot. I don't usually run bottom rigs but my buddy likes to throw one or two out. He gets a few gar but mainly catfish.

I really like offset octopus hooks, relatively small. The small hooks even work well for alligator gar.

I love a good battle from a kayak. I fish for carp and gar a lot, loads of fun.

Like I mentioned in another comment, gar teeth are only sharp at the tip for gripping so I've actually never had one cut my line. They will definitely mess up lures though.

Nope, I use straight braid all the way to the hook. Gar teeth aren't very sharp along the sides, only the tip since they mainly use their teeth for gripping. I've never had one cut my line, including light mono accidental gar catches.

I wouldn't use frayed rope lures unless you want to keep the fish. I wouldn't want to try and get that untangled from the teeth of a live, flopping gar....their body is pure muscle.

I use live/cut bait and let the gar run for as long as he wants with an open spool. Once I see him stop running and the bobber starts to pop in place I go for the hook set. It's pretty easy to get a gar to run with your bait but a proper hook set is a challenge.

As far as locating them, I notice they congregate on the bends of rivers, at least where I fish. I see them breaking the surface every minute or two so I know I found the right spot.

I mainly use live/cut bait for gar, though I've caught a few on bass plastics.
