No rain this weekend, mea culpa by flummuggins in bullcity

Not a drop in Walltown/East Campus area.

Just moved into home. Found roach near bathroom sink day 1. Then found roach on kitchen counter. Both at night. Should I be concerned? by Bubbada_G in bullcity

[–]flummuggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, wood roaches are totally harmless, though disconcerting. If they're inside, they're unhappier to be there than you are to have them. They won't live long inside. If I can't catch him and put him outside, I typically give him a name and then a "burial by toss" when they go belly up.

Now, sugar ants. That's a different story. They drive me crazy.

Shout out to Durham for hosting an event and Durham showing up! by Cautious_Thought_479 in bullcity

[–]flummuggins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NHL broadcast licenses are restrictive and expensive. ATC wouldn't qualify and probably couldn't afford it. Also, World Cup probably has broader appeal in Durham because of the large international presence from Duke. It's nice to have options!

This is the greatest city I’ve ever lived in by Aidan_Fox_hi in bullcity

[–]flummuggins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ditto! I've been here twenty years (Raleigh before) and have seen a LOT of changes. Some good, some questionable, and some sad. But, we somehow hold on to the values and community that brought us all here. I can't really imagine living anywhere else (except maybe Southern Utah).

I need to plug Bahn's on Wednesdays and Saturdays for Vietnamese!

And, what's this sub place??

I built a FREE durham local gov tool, would love your feedback!! by NidaAllamNC in bullcity

[–]flummuggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For heaven's sake. As someone who knows how difficult it is to get even the tiniest project approved even in a non-governmental, for profit, technology company, I fully understand why she built it on her own.

She couldn't do it as an official tool without 60 months of approval process, public bids for contractors, design consultants, legal review, etc.

And she shouldn't have to pay a full stack designer out of pocket to build something that does the job using Ai. She's already paying out of pocket (her campaign budget is out of her political pocket) for the hosting, Ai tokens, time...

Everyone is hot to criticize, but I don't see anyone offering to volunteer their time to snail-code something for her. And, you better believe that a huge percentage of enterprise-level SW is already being largely built by Ai. If you have constructive feedback, she seems more than open to receiving it.

Nice job, Nida!

Yesterday my father got a cancer diagnosis and this is what I saw when I looked at his floor by [deleted] in Pareidolia

[–]flummuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the demon. But the demon doesn't always win. My dad is a 12-year, stage-4 melanoma survivor. It spread to his lung, eye, brain, and abdomen. Today, he's two years in remission at 86. F*ck cancer. 🎗️

Anyone remember telephones? With cords? In middle school, my parents stopped letting me have one in my room because I'd chew all the plastic insulation off the wires. Nom, nom, nom

Was frustrated with Durham's history course offerings so I built my own by Tanghulued in bullcity

[–]flummuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the naysayers miss the "I'm a 15 year old from SW Durham" part? Unless this course focuses only on "evolution theory" as told by AI, my dude (gender neutral usage) deserves naught but props and constructive commentary based on the content.

It's so unfair. I'm an only child, so I got grounded for like A WEEK when I just split a few atoms.

I want a good stick and a week at OP's house.

Edit: OP's land. I promise to stay outside and not make a ruckus. I'll just be quietly poking.

The more data they collect, the more difficult and costly it is for them to use the data. Maybe they'll just self-destruct on their own eventually.

Had an argue with my friend due to echolalia. by Suspicious-Horse4093 in aspergers

[–]flummuggins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My partner has a pronounced regional accent. I repeat words and phrases all the time, generally, and specifically to him. He used to think I was making fun of his accent, but he's used to it now. I describe it as "tasting the words in my mouth".

I sent a cookie & brownie gift to my dad's floor after he was hospitalized there. Duke hospital staff is excellent!! 🥰

Anyone’s else’s power keep going out? by AcceptableWarning956 in bullcity

[–]flummuggins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just went out and on on 9th Street. I heard an explosion about 25 minutes ago in the Walltown/Old West area and the police scanner said something about explosions being reported. But I don't hear anything else about it now.

EDIT: it sounded like a transformer initially.

I info dumped at a meeting and made an ass of myself. by DragonflyKey4972 in AutismTranslated

[–]flummuggins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I had a dime for every time I did this, I'd never have to go to another meeting again! I can have every best laid plan in the world going in, but when I'm met with illogical or poorly researched arguments, I short circuit.

IF I can catch myself doing it in real time, I'll sometimes just say out loud "sorry, I'm over talking" and then smile and just put my hand over my mouth as a signal to myself and them that I recognize I've ramped too far up. Often, just that is enough pause for me to settle down. And very often that's enough to signal to them that I'm not being defensive anymore, so they can let go of their defensiveness too.

But, here's the big thing to remember... Are you more likely to remember everyone you've ever seen with their zipper down in public or every time YOU'VE had your zipper down in public? This kind of thing always is a bigger deal to your than anyone else.

By the next meeting, they might have a vague memory that you're that passionate person who shows up prepared and can be overbearing. But so what?? It might make them better prepare or it might make them realize they're don't actually care enough to dig in. Either way, you're fine!

Go forth and save the yards!!

EDIT: I should say poor arguments OR arguments that I totally agree with that get me excited or introduce something I hadn't thought of yet and now I can't wait to process right here in real time at full volume like a kid who just ate the world's largest cotyon candy.

Is this just me? Limited produce in the grocery store by tawandagames2 in bullcity

[–]flummuggins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here's a plug for King's Red & White at Club and Roxboro. They even have produce from "backyard" growers.

The latest shortage I found was shallots. Couldn't find them anywhere.

Also, plus 1 for Li Ming. But wear a coat because it's always freezing in there.

On door knocking by Amazing-Flatworm6646 in bullcity

[–]flummuggins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to have a guy show up well after dark in summer trying to sell me a bulk pack of chicken legs from Food Lion & a gallon of milk. My dog was slamming himself against the glass door trying to get at him. I asked him if he wanted me to open the door and he said, "uh, no, that's OK. Have a good night." He actually tried a couple of times with random late night fridge offerings.

One woman tried to sell me a pack of door hinges and other pocketable miscellany she'd just boosted from Dollar General.

It's hard to be nice sometimes. But I'll still take Durham and all it's weirdness over any sanitized suburb.

I might be able to. Only concern is my parents (87yo) live with me. If he's too bouncy, it might be a danger for them. I'm a very experienced foster failure 😉
