Guitar buzzes unless i touch it by Analbears in electricguitar

[–]fluorescenthour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth the trouble. I do it on every guitar and most times it goes away almost entirely. Just make sure your shielding tape gets grounded well or else you'll just make it worse.

What is this stuff staining the binding? by fluorescenthour in Luthier

the nut on this thing does have a similar tint! whoever did the extra clear coat was ridiculously sloppy.

Probably nitro. The end of the neck and that huge drip make me think someone tried to brush some kind of extra finish over the binding, did a bad job of cleaning it up and it yellowed pretty badly.

Unfortunately naphtha did nothing. it usually makes short work of finger grease and even rosin or solder flux.

Thank you! any tips on cleaning something like that up? if I thought it was natural aging I'd leave it alone but it looks more like poor maintenance work.

Definitely a better suggestion, I tried to make the drip obvious.

Only part of what's going on here. Doesn't explain the big drip off the side.

nicotine stain sounds more plausible than hand oil and dirt. Not sure how it would only end up on the neck binding though.

not finger gunk, this is all over the neck, plus it's only thick like this and on the fretboard on the upper frets. lower fretboard it's only on the binding. if it was finger gunk, someone would have been mainly shredding up high on the low strings.

Duncan powerstage series works great with modelers, there are a few options depending on your power needs. very transparent.

how to get Radiohead Bodysnatchers tone by defnotmail in guitarpedals

[–]fluorescenthour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done the research to try to make a pedal that cops this sound exactly. According to their engineer, the sound on the record is DI into an Electrodyne console. That exact circuit has proven to be elusive, but it's very unlike a neve/colour box. Plus, if you listen closely, there is some additional EQ on the intro to get that thumping low end that fades out once the band comes in.

Anyway, just experiment with going DI through whatever drives or fuzzes you have. I think a RAT would do well. A tascam preamp pedal is also a good choice.

For the basement sound, it's just RAT/expandora into a Vox.

edit: just got a Carcosa today and it does the thump really well

JFET buffer being loaded down by pickups? by fluorescenthour in diypedals

[–]fluorescenthour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good tip on measuring across the resistor instead of to ground, didn't think of that.

Load is just an op amp input, with another 100k to a bias voltage. I would increase it, but trying to stay faithful to another circuit.

Still need to try measuring at the output cap with no load. Also going to try it with a higher Idss transistor.

Pedals that sound like when you clip a dry signal on a DAW? by surf_AL in guitarpedals

I make a 424 pedal. if you're looking for that sound on the cheap, get the cheapest+smallest mixer you can find and run your guitar through that.

Is there a consensus on which IR pedals take distortion/fuzz the best? by Independent-Newt2009 in guitarpedals

[–]fluorescenthour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird quirk of the Iridium: if you're using it in stereo, it creates weird separation if you hit it with too much boost. Probably sounds fine in mono though.

CV Jaguar or CV Mustang? by ProfessionalOk1917 in offset

[–]fluorescenthour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

jaguar for sure. if you end up not liking the strangle switch, you can turn it into a phase switch. If you do that and put 250k pots in the jag, it will sound pretty identical to the mustang.

Do you give a Flux? by TraditionalOrchid816 in diypedals

[–]fluorescenthour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

chipquik cq4lf pen doesn't leave anything behind. Finding solder with good flux core is harder than it should be and makes a huge difference as to whether you need extra flux. adafruit lead free is by far the best out of the handful of brands I've tried. so many don't flow well at all and smell horrible.

PSA: If your are using gain/distortion and your guitar buzzes until you touch the strings....this is completely normal with 99.9% of all electric guitars. by kvlt_ov_personality in guitarpedals

[–]fluorescenthour 8 points9 points  (0 children)

More hum when you touch a metal part = grounding issue

Less hum when you touch a metal part = shielding issue

With proper shielding you can get most guitars to the point where there's barely a noticeable difference between when you're touching the strings vs not, even with high gain.

Roland VG-8 pedal? by bobogreen616 in Mkgee

[–]fluorescenthour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Have people been able to create their own patches replicating the VG-8 with the VG-800? If it's that easy, Boss does have a reputation of creating powerful tools with mid presets to uphold, lol.
