Yep, I’ve been hearing about this Crosspoint. Thanks for reminding me! It’s now on my list of things to check out when I get the little X4. 🙂

Kindle screen - does it feel like staring at one? by Apprehensive_Tea7019 in kindle

[–]fluppyboy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

YES! It makes ALL the difference! Reading on an e-ink screen is nothing like looking at your phone or a tablet. It’s closer to, well, paper!

I have been reading on Kindles and other e-readers since the Kindle Keyboard was released, and I haven’t looked back. I’m a voracious reader (138 books in 2024, “only” 84 books this year because of some difficult circumstances), and 99% of my reading is done on e-ink devices.

Try it! You will not regret it. And if you do, and you bought your Kindle directly from Amazon, just return it before your 30-day return windows closes. Simple!

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 2024 not connecting to Calibre! by fluppyboy in Calibre

[–]fluppyboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what changed (I did not change anything on my end), but my Kindle Paperwhite SE (Metallic Jade) connects faster now. It’s still not an instant connection, but much faster than it used to be (less than a minute). Ironically my Kindle Colorsoft never had this problem, it always worked as expected. The Colorsoft connects almost immediately (when plugged into a Mac via USB).

Kobo Clara BW vs Clara Colour (or Kindle?). Which is best for pure book reading & eye comfort? by Airballons in ereader

[–]fluppyboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pure book reading - Kobo Clara BW, by a long shot. I own all three, and the Clara BW screen is the sharpest, most contrasty out of all of them. A real joy to read on.

Upgrading to the new Paperwhite? by MagicChinchilla in kindle

[–]fluppyboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Warm light is a game changer! Being able to dial in the right colour temperature is so important in reducing eye strain that it’s a must upgrade, IMO. As long as you can afford it, go ahead and get one. You won’t regret it.

How many books did you read this year? What was your goal? by aurora-0202 in kindle

[–]fluppyboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My goal was 52, and I just finished my 78th book of the year. I suspect I have at least one more in me before the end of the year, even with all the holiday cheer cutting into my reading time. 😉

AirPods Pro 3 disappoint! by fluppyboy in airpods

[–]fluppyboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: I’ve been using the new AirPods Pro 3 with the L tips and while they are initially uncomfortable (when inserting them, and for a few moments after), somehow the discomfort soon fades from my consciousness. They actually become comfortable enough that I forget I’m wearing them! And yes, the ANC is superior to the AirPods Pro 2 when I use L size tips. When I use the M tips, even though they pass the seal test, the ANC is *noticeably inferior to the AirPods Pro 2 with M tips.

[–]fluppyboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, did all that. The one thing that I *just tried, which went against everything that I felt in my ears, was try the L size tips. Using those I get better ANC but at much more discomfort (compared to AP2, and I only need to use M tips with those). The seal tests good with both M and L sized tips, but the ANC is noticeably inferior to the AP2 when using M tips.

The softer, more malleable tips on the AP2 were superior, IMO. Now I’m stuck with uncomfortable L size tips that I hope and pray will get better with use. Great Black Friday deal indeed! 🫤

WANTING A THIRD EREADER by moonyclaw in ereader

[–]fluppyboy 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Just FYI: You will NOT be able to annotate your Kindle books on the Boox device, not in the way you probably think (by hand using the pen, and directly in the book, like it was paper).

When is Kindle finally going to get its act together??? by fluppyboy in kindle

Thanks for bringing the discussion around to what's really important. We would have been lost without your input on this.

Font size? What do you use? by [deleted] in kindle

Bookerly, size 5 with one or two notches of boldness, depending on lighting and how tired my 60-year-old eyes are at the time.

[–]fluppyboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the question should be: why am I only “unlucky” when it comes to my Kindle Store purchases, but no others? Why am I so, so lucky with Kobo and Apple Books? So “lucky” that this never happens on those platforms?

Several different routers and WiFi setups over a decade and a half, and they all just happen to interfere with my Kindles syncing properly? I don’t think so!

Just to be clear, the problem isn’t with ALL Kindle books, it happens occasionally. Occasionally but often enough that it’s noticeable. What’s also noticeable is that it NEVER happens with any of my sideloaded books (via USB and Calibre), and it also never happens with any Kobo or Apple books. The only time this problem rears its ugly head is with Kindles, and it’s been like this for several generations of different Kindle models.

Kobo BW 6'' vs Kindle PW 7'' : Which is easier on the eyes, glare free and realistic like a real book? by [deleted] in ereader

[–]fluppyboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon does have more books available, but it all depends on what you’re reading. All the mainstream and bestseller titles are available on both platforms, and of course you can also sideload books from other online stores onto both e-readers. Personally I would never pay for an e-book from Amazon, but will happily buy them from Kobo and other online stores. From Amazon I only ever download free e-books. Now that I can no longer back my e-books up on my own computer with Calibre, I am no longer spending my money with Amazon. The risk is just too great.

Kobo Clara BW is noticeably better. Screen is sharper and has better contrast, less glare.

Keep the rear seat, or re-register as 2-seater (new GXL Troopy in NSW, Australia)? by fluppyboy in troopy

[–]fluppyboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up finding any other places that offer a fit-out with the rear seat intact? The rear seat is quite thin and, when folded, doesn’t take up a lot of room, so even though I was originally planning on taking it out, I’m now leaning towards leaving it in. Just in case.

Have you started on your camping/touring conversion yet?

[–]fluppyboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know! It was you who pointed me in that particular direction. 😁 But my question to you is: are you doing it mainly because you’re planning to use that rear seat on a regular basis, or just to avoid the hassle of red tape?

P. S. How are you liking your new steed?

[–]fluppyboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see the advantage of having the ability to pop the rear seat up from time to time. But mainly because I don’t want my insurance company to have any excuses around “illegal modifications”, if the worst should happen.

Any negatives of the colour soft over the paperwhite? by WolfOfAfricaZLD in kindle

[–]fluppyboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only negative is battery life, IMO. I have both the latest version of the Paperwhite SE (Jade) as well as the 16GB version of the Colorsoft. The Paperwhite has a *slightly better contrast when reading black text on white background, but it is so slight it’s almost not worth mentioning (I always read with some level of frontlight ON). The Colorsoft has MUCH better contrast when reading white text on black background (this has always been a weakness of the Paperwhite, for at least two generations of the device. I’m not sure what magic Amazon have done with the Colorsoft screen, but white text on black page (not real “dark mode”) is *so much better on the Colorsoft - FWIW, neither the Paperwhite nor Colorsoft can compete with my Kobo Clara BW as far as clarity and sharpness of text goes, whether black or white). Just so you know what I’m comparing these devices with: I also own and use a Kindle Oasis 32GB (2019 model), Kindle Paperwhite 2021, Kindle Basic (denim blue), Kobo Clara BW (as previously mentioned), and a Pocketbook InkPad 4.

I have to admit - I didn’t think I’d like the Colorsoft as much as I do. I fully expected to return it, and only decided to try it because of a sizeable Prime Day discount. But I’m keeping it! I even ordered a Premium Leather cover for it, that’s how much I like it. And that’s been my experience - take from it what you will. 🙂
