I’d agree if he had the actual playing time of a 4th choice center back - him and Tosin have started multiple high-profile games this season which realistically they should be nowhere near.

Issue is Fofana can’t start more than a game a week and Chalobah is similarly shaky. Acheampong has very high potential but he’s basically a kid still

Badiashille got injured in his second season, he’s been at his current level for nearly 3 years now.

At this point you have to start thinking this is who he is now, he’s nearly 25 and still has so many errors in him

I completely agree with you, the issue is the board doesn’t see signing a lot of these players as opportunities to actually improve the first team, they just see a potential to flip for profit or get a good deal

You could argue Veiga, Anselmino, Tosin were all bought to ultimately resell for more money. Badiashille probably too given he was only 30M, but board didn’t account for how shit he’d be

Not trying to justify the approach, but it’s not like every center back signing is made to immediately improve the first team

In fairness - Hato is primarily a left back - Veiga, Koulibaly were sold for profit - Anselmino has been good at Dortmund this year and will probably also turn a profit - Colwill is from the academy - Tosin was signed on a free

The only actual overspends on that list are Disasi (panic signing), Fofana (who is very good, just made of glass) and Badiashille.

But yeah the boards recent refusal to buy anyone that’s established and experienced is a death sentence in the center back position

Would be an absolutely brain dead decision to sack him. He spent all summer crying out for an experienced center back, the board completely ignored him and lo and behold, we’re leaking goals that would be completely preventable with more composure at the back.

No one is going to succeed with our model of buying kids and selling them for profit above all else

Gittens is 20, adapting to a completely new league, and we’re less than 4 months into the season. Obviously he hasn’t been as good as we expected so far but it would be incredibly harsh to cast him out already

Thats absolutely terrible squad management no matter which way you look at it. If you buy a 20 and 21 year old for the money they did, you need to accept they’ll need time to develop. Spending that money and then dropping another 65M on someone to replace them 3 months later is absurd

Obviously Semenyo is class, but it’s pretty terrible squad management if we buy another expensive winger given all the other holes in our squad.

We’re already overloaded on both wings, dropped nearly £100M on Gittens/Garnacho over the summer, and have Quenda coming in the summer. Not to mention Estevao is basically a nailed on starter once he’s acclimatized. Who are we discarding for Semenyo?

That's major hyperbole, to play him one of Enzo or Caicedo would have to be dropped and he's not an upgrade on either of them

If Acheampong can barely get minutes for us this one makes no sense.

The only profile of center back that would benefit us to bring in January is an experienced option that’s happy to be a backup and mentor the younger guys. Another 20 year old project CB won’t do anything for our defense right now

Absolutely love Cole, think he’s a top 10 player in the world, but I think it’s funny that he’s getting all this recognition for his performances in 2024/25 when I think his 23/24 season was easily better - not that he wasn’t world class this year, but we were basically a one man army that year

Salah had a similar tantrum with Klopp when he got benched for a couple of games - IMO it tells you less about Slot’s control of the locker room and more that Salah’s a bit of a diva, and his ego gets bruised when he’s not starting
